MEATBALLS
Steve awoke from hibernation hungry.

"Wow, what's that? Cereal bar with cocoa. That's a thick trilaminate pack that has a questionable location for its tear notch--look. Tear notch should be at the very top. We'll see if there's a malfunction on opening it."

"Aw, jeez. That's your spoon; it's made of wood. That's OK, I guess. I mean, hnn, do that launch movement at least once with it without it breaking. We'll see."

"Oh, this one's a leaker--look. See that? Gotta be careful with that."

"Smells like an office furniture store, not like a date-walnut bar at all."

"Oh, no; this is gonna take a long time to stir. Look at that stuff, that's, like, inhumane. There's not going to be any water left by the stir; there's just gonna be plaster left. Mayday. Gonna have to hold this while stirring it; two hands for this bad boy right here, Jesus."

"Something like this, make you go vegan for a day. Until you get a stomach cramp; this stuff's pretty weird. Who knows; doesn't blend very well, but after it takes you a year or two to mix, it's worth it."

"Sure, soy protein's cheap and demoralizing, but it's better than no protein at all."

"Passing grade; you can tell just by the visual on a spray-dried if it's good or not, and that's a good quality spray-dried coffee. Not the best but not the worst, and I think it's better than it used to be."

"It is technically a beverage."

"That's a huge pack of chili powder! Five grams--that's way too much. What do they want me to season? Here; I'm putting the whole thing in there."

"Let's put a little salt in the chili... and in the beverage base for some flavor. ...Really lost it this time."

Steve is in absolute awe of the chili+crackers combo. I've never seen such cinematography in his videos.

"That looks like...
...
...
...a meal."

"This thing could win awards for Retort Pouch Chili of the Year."

"The back of my throat is burning, but it's kinda nice. It's a cool burn. Seems like it'd cure what ails ya. Comfort food. And it's flavorful. I mean, it's just. It's the hot sauce. It's exciting."

"It's like tactical diner food."

I love the man, but he uses WAY too little water in almost everything he reconstitutes. I understand he likes his coffee strong and that's fine, he knows what all MRE coffee tastes like by now, but stuff like soups and especially the protein loaded beverages need a lot of water to come out the way the makers intended and it honestly bothers me when he shorts the stuff by 2 or 3oz. then complains that it's too thick to stir/doesn't taste right.

Glad to see him putting out videos on more regular basis again, I missed my MRE fix there for a couple years and only Steve's soothing voice will do.

You can't un-add water, so I can see why he does it. It'd still make a better review if he tried things with less water and then added more to the recommended amount.

The vegan protein drink was an absolute saga.

Steve was pretty savage in the Canadian ration video. The quick subtle cut where all the Reese pieces disappear from the trail mix and nothing else was touched was funny.

EDIT: I also notice the Australian video was filmed in 2019 from the description. This has been mentioned before but I wonder how many random videos he has filmed and ready to go on his computer.

I saw the comments and thought he'd be harsher. The main is absolutely miniscule, with half the meal being inedible you'd finish it hungrier than you started.
Damn, he usually has good things to say about Canadian MREs, they must have really dropped the puck with this one. Will watch over lunch.

Was surprised to see they have the same corn bread from the US chili MRE. I can vouch for it since that's one of the few MRE's I've had, it's pretty damn good and I liked it more than say, Jiffy brand corn bread mix (Homemade corn bread is still better of course). Shame the chili is aggressively bland in the MRE.

You know, this is pretty on-brand for Steve: it's from 2019, but it's still watchable. He was just trying to fix the sound recording so there'd only be a ...nice hiss.

This ration had a huge discrepancy between visual appearance and (reported) taste. I guess it makes sense since the French are used to paté.

At one point it looked like Steve was eating cat food on a tortilla, but he was stoked about it.
Visual appearance is pretty important in MRE. Haven't watched the whole thing yet (why did the write Bred instead of Pain?) but some of the mains look pretty horrifying.

Very quiet Steve in the new episodes. There is a charm for the older MREs. Not going full manchild like the newer ones.
One older MRE, and one fancy MRE. He was enjoying that Omani accessory pack.

Man that pork patty one is really nice compared to the current itteration. Decided I'd open mine and have it for breakfast to compare. This is what you get in the current one.
1. Main (330 calories)
2. Hash brown potatoes w/ bacon, pepper and onion (160 calories)
3. Granola w/ milk and blueberries (260 calories)
4. Smoked Almonds, Barbecure (110 calories)
5. Maple muffin top (280 calories)
6. Table syrup (80 calories)
7. 'Grape drank' (90 calories)
8. Accessory pack (napkin, sugar, artifical sugar, salt, instant coffee, creamer, gum, moist towelette)

If you swapped the crackers with the potatoes on the 2009 one, it would probably be the favorite breakfast MRE by a country mile. A complete, well rounded breakfast. The 2024/5 version just feels like an all-round downgrade besides the addition of the potatoes. The potion size of the almonds is an absolute joke and swapping the cappachino for instant coffee and the cider for grape drank (and I don't even like cider) is insulting. Apple butter would of been so much nicer with the muffin top imo, and the removal of the salsa verde, only to end up including potatoes, something it would actually pair well with instead of being the odd one out, makes no sense. It would be fairly large for an MRE in terms of total food, but I don't think most active soldiers are really gonna mind having an extra bakery sweet to barter with or save for later.

They don't make em like they used to.

Looks like Steve REALLY enjoyed that Omani ration. Seems the sultan knows better then to scrimp out on his troops.

Compare that high quality looking (and tasting according to Steve) 24hr ration with all the accessories you could want or need for every meal to the basement tier preservative-loaded but still rotting garbage the Chinese PLA get for their field rations.

Even the packaging is quality and well distributed inside for mains, sides and accessories whereas the chinkshit packages are delaminated or leaking half the time. Absolute night and day difference.
