What makes the Gems so relevant is that their entire existence is a mixture of traits that are attractive to spergs and to SJWs.

On one hand, they're a brightly color-coded all-female species with gem-themed names and designs. They have special powers, fight evil, and have a world based on magitek. Their characterization can be easily boiled down to a couple traits. There's a lot of similarities in there with My Little Pony, Sonic, and other sperg meccas. On the other hand, not only are they all-female (feminism!!), they naturally don't have a concept of another gender (trans*!!) or human customs (neurodiversity!!), they have explicitly been shown to have romantic relationships (queer!!), and they have design features that are not conventionally attractive (body positivity!!) as well as some that are typically associated with racial minorities (poc!!).

I think at this point the horse fans ARE the lesser evil, in that they don't come up with as much awful shit in as little time.

There's also the fact that all of the "deep" messages being portrayed in the show aren't as new and ground-breaking as the fandom likes to believe. We've seen these tropes before; the illusion that there's something more is created because everything is so quirky, bold and colorful. Just the sort of thing Tumblrinas flock to.

And like you said, since the gems themselves are seen as special snowflakes due to their unique nature, that automatically makes the show seem more sophisticated.

I get a feeling a lot of Steven Universe fans are in it for the whole fad/popularity points thing. I don't know what to think about say, Andrew Dobson's love of the show.

Honestly I I'm surprised the writers and Sugar didnt expect the fandom to get this crazy. When one of your writers is like "Lul go watch the avengers if you want CIS male action" and then the next day act shocked the fandom is so filled with tism. If anything the fandom is what is gonna kill this shows creative team. With MLP you can separate bronies and the show. You know MLP is really meant for little girls and the biggest thing, to sell pony toys. The bronies where just an unexpected side effect. They really have no bearing on the overall product because its not marketed to them.

With SU...you really dont know who its marketed for? I mean its on Cartoon network so 10-13 range? But that cant be right because the writers regularly interact with the older fanbase that keeps the show alive. But as someone pointed out when things dont go their way, the fans scream and SCREAM about it, harassing the creators. I mean the same shit happens to the MLP writers but they can blow it off as "Dude this show isn't for you"

But with SU they don't have that luxury and because of that they have to craft stories their older fans want and expect, even though the show is basically a kids show, to prevent a shit storm. And eventually as a writer, that wears on you when you can't tell the story you want and kills your creative process.

Alternatively as @Meowthkip pointed out they could go the route of Gravity Falls and take digs at the older fanbase from time to time and remind them this is a kids show.

For one, it doesn't help that Steven Universe promotes some of the manchild behavior and a bunch of Tumblr social justice stuff added in there just to spice it up., and we both know those two areas have extreme forms of mental retardation. You got a fat kid that has a family of mostly women taking care of him; I feel that a few people reflect themselves as the main character, and odds are you are going to have a few of them that never quite outgrew their childhood, and thus try to "return" to cartoons such as these. Also, people will fight tooth and nail for things they hold quite close to them-- hence why fanboying/fangirling flame wars are most of the times likened to a spergout, because they illogically fight against all that oppose their cartoon "Fantasty" of having crystal gems saving the world, whilst eating unhealthy food and having magical powers.

I think Sonic appeals to spergs by being just bright and flashy with a one-dimensional character and caused some weird stirrings in the more perverted crowd. Not sure nostalgia is a factor, I think it's more an aversion to reality, because if they try to watch something more serious (like GoT) they'll get emotions, the bad kind of emotions like angry, saddness, etc. They might also get reminded constantly that the world isn't a fairy tale, that injustice and bad guys exists and most of the time are unpunished. It's a grim reality?, sure, but that doesn't mean that every step you take will be met with a tragedy.
SO, instead of watching news, more serious series, documentaries or something more interesting, they rather watch cartoons and live in a happy colorful place full of justice were the villain always lose. But since these manchildren now have the capacity to come up with really complex bullshit (compared to kids simple minds), they simply try to overthink and build a world of their own, filled with crazy crap that satisfies their shitty behavior and all based on the cartoon they are watching.

TL;DR They watch cartoons because they don't want to face reality, make shit up and live in a bubble.
