Steven Universe fandom (Gemtlemen)

Weird that they talk about how problematic anime is. I thought that at least a few of them were cool guys because a bunch of scenes from the show are apparently just ripped wholesale from anime. There's way more than the one example posted above.

Also, he's an artist who is talking about "unlearning" stuff. You know, doing the opposite of using years of practice.
I did some googling. Here's Lamar Abrams's wiki page with a list of episodes he's done:
http://steven-universe.wikia.com/wiki/Lamar_Abrams

Then I did a search for "worst Steven Universe episodes" ("worst storyboarders" got no real results):
https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/comments/37jb5w/what_is_the_worst_steven_universe_episode/

Note how more than half of the episodes mentioned were his doing. I think he might want to re-evaluate his testosterone-killing diet.

There is a difference between:

"Oh I liked that show as a kid! I used to think that he was an awesome villain and that it was really funny! Good times..."

and

"omg this is the greatest show ever it is so influential and shaped me into the person that I am and everyone should love it."

One of those statements is a good way to get weird looks from other people.

I think the latter is alright so long as you say "influenced me creatively," but that implies you're creative in the first place.

I do think the person in that quote has a point. Sorta. The whole Steven Universe fan thing is still there.

Lamar Abrams, a SU writer, is a notable fag. He's one of these "* feminine guys who don't need masculinity uwu *"

Why should you dictate me on how I draw women? I'm an artist, I'll draw how I want

Some extra simp shit below:

Most people that make cartoons for cartoon network are giant pussies now. If you're overly nice, a huge kiss ass and you make cutesy bullshit you'll probably get a show. The only person that is not "I love women they're the best and I love fat people and their diabetes " while still making something good in my opinion is Justin Roiland.

I think doing either would get you weird looks from people, whether you act like a rabid fan or not. You shouldn't sperg about cartoons in public, especially ones like Steven Universe.

I know they lost their shit when Max Gilardi made this

Just look up "hotdiggedydemon" in the tags in tumblr and see 15 year olds whine about a 27 year old.

The first case of whining below.

That's that guy that made those "Pony.MOV" videos. I remember Chris getting pissed at those. Good to know Max is still pissing off fandom spergs.

If I could do it all over again and hit agree all over again I'd do it fifteen times over again

And offensive. We all know that Eric only has eyes for Tim.

There's also the fact that all of the "deep" messages being portrayed in the show aren't as new and ground-breaking as the fandom likes to believe. We've seen these tropes before; the illusion that there's something more is created because everything is so quirky, bold and colorful. Just the sort of thing Tumblrinas flock to.

And like you said, since the gems themselves are seen as special snowflakes due to their unique nature, that automatically makes the show seem more sophisticated.

"Deep" is one of those chronically overused bland words (like "awesome" and "epic") that people use because they don't know any better or any other words to use. The show isn't "deep" - it just uses themes uncommon to kids television. I'd be willing to bet that if you pressed one of them on what makes the show "deep"- really pressed and forced them to critically analyze it, not just accepted "Oh it's got a good message." - they wouldn't be able to give you a satisfactory answer.

What are you talking about?, CN clearly has its priorities straight:
"An original pencil drawing of Spike Spiegel (by the artist who actually designed him) covered up by an intern's sharpie drawing. (Located in the CN stairwell)"

What strikes me the most, is the people who actually defend such idiocy:
"The reason it was drawn on a wall was that it wasn't meant to last forever. Live goes on."
"If you find Toshihiro Kawamoto at a con you can probably get him to sketch Spike for you, you know. Losing a sketch really isn't a big deal."
"If they wanted to preserve the drawing they could have hung a backless frame over it or something."

So as you can see, there are idiots working in CN but the real problem is the other idiots (fanbase) enforcing them.

Let me clear this up again: My problem is not with the cartoons or even the shitty people behind it, my problem is the fandom (the hardcore fandom, not the people who just like the cartoon and understand it's only a cartoon) that want to push it over everyone else and praise it like it's the best thing to ever happen to humanity.

I'd expect them to go off on a rant about how lesbians are such a totally progressive thing to have in a kid's cartoon, oblivious to the fact that treating it like it's something special does the exact opposite of making people think it's "normal."

I don't know, the dipshit CN intern that drew their crappy "Ward inspired" creation over the work of someone with talent is the one that should be getting shit here. People making cartoons are definitely becoming worse than they once were, or at least people are becoming more aware of it.

The problem with SU is that "[those who] want to push it over everyone else and praise it like it's the best thing to ever happen to humanity" are the people who make the show.

Which Ward? Jay or Pendleton?

I've actually met people who've been involved in animation (only two of which weren't voice actors, to be fair), and I can vouch for them being pretty great guys. If this is the way it's going... We're fucked.

JAIMAS EDIT: Guys I get the relevance but try to stay on topic.

Pendleton Ward, who basically created the entire modern style of cartoons because it's easy to draw and has very few rules. I'm just more confused by the SU staff and the way some of them talk about anime, when their show has shot for shot remakes. Like, do they fight because some people object to putting in yet another obscure anime reference? Or do they just make jokes about "gross stuff" and laugh it all off like the director of the show said?

That particular sketch is pretty clearly Bryan Lee O'Malley-inspired, not Penn Ward.
