Weird that they talk about how problematic anime is. I thought that at least a few of them were cool guys because a bunch of scenes from the show are apparently just ripped wholesale from anime. There's way more than the one example posted above.

Also, he's an artist who is talking about "unlearning" stuff. You know, doing the opposite of using years of practice.

"Oh I liked that show as a kid! I used to think that he was an awesome villain and that it was really funny! Good times..."

and

"omg this is the greatest show ever it is so influential and shaped me into the person that I am and everyone should love it."

One of those statements is a good way to get weird looks from other people.

I think the latter is alright so long as you say "influenced me creatively," but that implies you're creative in the first place.

I do think the person in that quote has a point. Sorta. The whole Steven Universe fan thing is still there.

Most people that make cartoons for cartoon network are giant pussies now. If you're overly nice, a huge kiss ass and you make cutesy bullshit you'll probably get a show. The only person that is not "I love women they're the best and I love fat people and their diabetes " while still making something good in my opinion is Justin Roiland.

There's also the fact that all of the "deep" messages being portrayed in the show aren't as new and ground-breaking as the fandom likes to believe. We've seen these tropes before; the illusion that there's something more is created because everything is so quirky, bold and colorful. Just the sort of thing Tumblrinas flock to.

And like you said, since the gems themselves are seen as special snowflakes due to their unique nature, that automatically makes the show seem more sophisticated.

"Deep" is one of those chronically overused bland words (like "awesome" and "epic") that people use because they don't know any better or any other words to use. The show isn't "deep" - it just uses themes uncommon to kids television. I'd be willing to bet that if you pressed one of them on what makes the show "deep"- really pressed and forced them to critically analyze it, not just accepted "Oh it's got a good message." - they wouldn't be able to give you a satisfactory answer.

What strikes me the most, is the people who actually defend such idiocy:
"The reason it was drawn on a wall was that it wasn't meant to last forever. Live goes on."
"If you find Toshihiro Kawamoto at a con you can probably get him to sketch Spike for you, you know. Losing a sketch really isn't a big deal."
"If they wanted to preserve the drawing they could have hung a backless frame over it or something."

So as you can see, there are idiots working in CN but the real problem is the other idiots (fanbase) enforcing them.

Let me clear this up again: My problem is not with the cartoons or even the shitty people behind it, my problem is the fandom (the hardcore fandom, not the people who just like the cartoon and understand it's only a cartoon) that want to push it over everyone else and praise it like it's the best thing to ever happen to humanity.
