Suggestion and Update Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Okay, so if all this shit has been delegated to the popup window, and 99% of the users have a gaping asshole between their post count and their HIV status, why not put the "Fresh Meat" text there?

I actually think removing the sticker notifications will be good for the health of the forum in the long term.

Notification systems give a shot of dopamine that acts as a reward for "good" (read: popular) posts. Social media sites know this and maximise the effect of it with icons, sound effects, and phone popups, and the result of this is those sites becoming insufferable because they've been taken over by attention-seekers desperate for updoots like a junkie craving his next hit. No-one's interested in discussing nuance or elaborating on their opinions, they just package it up in an oversimplified, almost slogan-like statement that everyone else will pat them on the back for, because that's what the system incentivises.

This forum doesn't have this exact issue, but it's not uncommon for posts that get featured on the front page to be immediately followed by pages on end of empty nothing-posts reciting an almost identical opinion on the matter as the one prior - which pings from positive reaction stickers encourage. I feel like a lot of politisperging gets rewarded because of them too, posting ">she" or "ywnbaw" in every thread that involves a troon is basically just spam at this point, but it's an efficient way to get positive stickers for little effort if you're that way inclined.

Reaction stickers themselves have a place since they let us give simple responses to posts like "I agree" or "you have autism" without needlessly clogging up the thread, but having the little icon at the top telling us we've been a good boy can bring out the worst in people. I feel like the current system is a good compromise (although maybe put the number of each sticker back to normal, maybe a bit optimistic on my part but I'd like to think someone out there will see a high number of dumb/MATI reacts and think "I've been kind of a retard lately, maybe I should tone it down").
He’s not wrong here. But it is hard trying to find a suitable medium for both sides. So we have to stick with one of the two.

Maybe send notifications for bad reactions? i don’t know

i think notifications for things like late posts would be good same for anything deemed to be power leveling since that is generally important info for someone to have easier access to. as nice is it is to have instant access to reactions it is not really useful unless it is either informative or promotes a healthy conversation.

a middle ground would need to be something that serves the same purpose as reaction notifications but has none of the downsides. or maybe you need to unlock reaction notifications by being good without them.

reward the people who actually try and dont lose their minds if somebody disagrees with them and punish the people who only care about getting as many updoots as possible. not sure if it would go over well or even work in general but its all i can think of at the moment.

The "Fresh Meat" indicator was useful, and I think there is a good way to bring it back without it being a forced user subtitle and without it being annoying.

Right now the only three widgets that can show up in this popup are the post count, reaction score and referrals. Fresh Meats cannot send referrals so they'll always have just the post count and the reaction score with a massive empty space in-between.

This seems like the perfect spot to put the Fresh Meat title at. It's always in the center of that wasted space, it doesn't conflict with anything, and it's in the hover popup where the join date is where people complained that "the join dates are gone" because they weren't always visible and hovering/tapping on that username is too much work for those people so fuck it, why not? The function for the Fresh Meat status is clearly ready since it got quickly reimplemented as a dimmed username, the new reaction score function got added there rather quickly too, so surely it's not that difficult to do.

Shitposting aside this is actually a suggestion I don't hate.

All right. I've deliberately stepped back and given the new system a few days to really see how I actually feel about the new changes. I've shitposted of course but I wanted to give it a fair shot.

From my personal experience I'd say there are some good ideas but the whole thing is tedious and cumbersome more than anything else. People have argued that the extra time it takes to find your reactions is not a big deal, and I can understand where they're coming from. But the thing about reaction notifications popping up is that it allows us to see who's been reacting to our posts quickly. Anyone who uses it for more than just that is a genuine retard who thinks using the watched threads section of the site is worse than Hitler. You're going to have a lot more stupid people reacting to someone's powerlevel or boast about how they're better than another lolcow by posting "holy shit you're dumb" for several pages which is going to make threads a whole lot muddier and less fun to read - moreso than it already is now when something gets featured. You might not agree with me on this particular point, but remember a lot of the members here have special needs and it most likely will happen.

The other issue is something I'm going to address to @Null. I totally get it. People on this site are absolute fucking morons when it comes to using stickers as an e-peen. This isn't and shouldn't be a place that relies on Karma, Reddit Gold, Likes or whatever else social media sites use to score dopamine hits. I'll even say that making the total number of positive ratings not visible to each other is a decent idea. Some kiwis forget that sometimes a newfag can improve their posts or that an oldfag can troon out and start posting the worst shit imaginable. But this isn't going to work in the long term.

I think I should mention that you've kind of gone about this like how Bongistan brings in new "legislations". Now I sure as hell don't know just how many retards actually abuse the ratings system but I can't imagine it's a huge proportion of everyone who posts on a regular basis. At least from my perspective you've restricted many for the actions of a few. And I'm going to highlight that the few who are doing this (however many that is) aren't really going to care. They're still going to get assmad about being awarded a trash can or a top hat and go after the person who thought their post was stupid enough to deserve such a rating. They're still going to piss and moan to you and your team and the only ones who are truly going to be affected are everyone else.

Unlike Bongistan, however, you're a thousand times more reasonable. I've been quietly observing the sorts of folks here who tend to use this sort of behaviour and they don't really seem to be engaging with the community as a whole. Banning doesn't really work unless it's a permaban and even then there is a high chance they'll make a sock account. Oldest trick in the book. Instead what I am going to suggest should get the message across clearer:

Instead of changing the rating notifications for everyone. Change it for the few.

What I mean by this is simple. Everyone gets to use the ratings system. They get three chances. First results in a warning. Second results in a week ban. Should they abuse the ratings system again a third time they lose the privilege to post ratings until further notice.

Three strikes, you're out. So to speak.

Should they continue to piss and moan after doing this then banning them permaban might be an option. If they're focusing more on stickers than the antics of lolcows, then it is probably safe to say they aren't coming here for the lolcows and are just using this as a less annoying form of Reddit.

I know this is a lot to take in Null and if you've read all of this so far I appreciate it. If you have any thoughts or can see any glaring faults with what I've put forward I'd be happy to hear it. I hate them as much as you do and don't want to see this place become more known for slapfights between members than poking fun at trans people. Thank you for your time!

TL;DR: Not this time. Go back up and read my post or bugger off, you lazy sod.

I am not creating a two-tiered system for ratings. Rating notifications are not a "privilege". They are not important. There is nothing about a rating notification that is relevant to your interests. If you are interested in how your post is performing, you can check it manually. Every single use case brought up as a reason to be instantly notified if someone has pressed LIKE on your post is defeated by a second of thought and consideration.

I am not persuaded by any of these points:
  • Rating notifications are important. They are not. They serve no purpose. That is why they are removed.
  • Rating notifications are culture. They are not, and if they are, they should not be.
  • Rating notifications are informative. They kind of are, but they do not require imminent attention. They can be seen on the rating notification page. If you are curious how a specific post is performing, you can go find it.
  • Rating notifications are a privilege that should be taken or given. They are not. Treating them as such is a mistake.
  • Rating notifications help me find where my posts are. There are at least three other ways to do this.
  • Rating notifications help me find where I left off in a thread. They do not. The forum software literally tracks the last post you saw and stores it.
  • Rating notifications help me know if someone replied to a thread I care about. They do not. There is zero correlation between a rating and a new post. Watched Threads does this.
On day one I disabled rating notifications for my posts. I have never used this site with them enabled. As a result, I know how to use the forum to find things without random user actions arbitrarily selecting a single post of mine at complete fucking random and notifying me that someone liked them. If you rely on this mechanism to do anything, you are literally using the site wrong. You have gimped your own ability to find content on the forum. You have tunnel visioned your time spent on this site. You have trained yourself to use the forum wrong.

I can tell you right now, even if something were to happen and you guys annoy me enough I re-enable it, I will never import this feature to the new forum software. I will never permit this retarded horse shit to ever happen again. Instant gratification for sticker button presses is now hard coded into my book of grudges and I will never permit it to exist in the future.

try a little crispy crackarooski instead
oh yeah also null i mentioned in another thread that you could give ratings a cooldown as well as a confirmation which requires loading a new page for every single rating.

it would inconvenience people and that's funny
