Super Smash Bros.

It'd be a million times better than Banjo-Kazooie. Crono and Frog easily have more than enough personality to be more than just another generic anime guy with a sword. If Chrono Trigger ever had a chance at getting in though, Dragon Quest just completely killed it.

I say this as someone who's favorite videogame series is the Chrono series, as stoked as I would be to see a Trigger character in Smash, I feel that Dragon Quest being represented was long overdue, due to how important it was to establishing the JRPG genre as a whole, popularity in the west be damned.

In terms of sales it is the third highest selling RPG series in the world after Final Fantasy in 2nd and Pokemon in 1st, and this is mostly running on Japanese sales alone seeing as it never caught on elsewhere.

I know people wanted Crono, or Sora, or Geno, but a Dragon Quest character was the most obvious choice for a second Square Enix rep.

You could include some Resident Evil characters since RE4 and the remake of RE1 were originally Gamecube games and given the presence of Street Fighter characters, Capcom is more than willing to work with Nintendo on this.
I was thinking about this the other day since RE4 was originally a Nintendo exclusive and they've been re-releasing a ton of RE games on Switch. The only problem though is the use of real firearms. With Snake they just replaced all his guns with explosives that he already used in the game. You can't really do that with Leon or Chris, since the only non-firearms they use are the knife and rocket launcher.

I dunno, if they wouldn't let Solid Snake keep his guns I don't see them doing that with RE characters, and that basically cripples their movesets.

If Joker can use a gun and Bayonetta can be lewd and use guns, I think Leon's fair game.

What I find extra amusing is that in Smash 4 the ray gun item was deliberately redesigned to look less like a real gun even though it already fired cartoony green lasers instead of anything resembling a bullet, only to have Bayo appear in the same game later.

Though she and Joker still get away with it because they're both utilizing "magic bullets" with Joker in particular having this loophole of his gun just being a replica but being in the metaverse makes it act as a real gun or something like that (I know very little about Persona 5). Personally I'm waiting for Doomguy to kick down the door outright with the whole "no real guns in Smash" debacle.

I won't waste your time by coming up with some bullshit reason to why it won't happen. I just really don't see doomguy happening.

I'm not saying he will necessarily, simply thinking it'd be funny after all these years of Smash foregoing actual guns by any means nessesary (see: Snake), then beating around the bush with the magic bullet shenanigans mentioned before, then them finally just saying "Fuck it" and throwing Doomguy in there somehow and completely destroy all previous conventions regarding firearms.

Again I seriously don't think he'll happen, but it's an amusing notion.

Additionally, just because it hasn't caught fire in the west yet - Smash Brothers inclusion helped Fire Emblem catch over here, with a number of people playing smash and going "Who the fuck are Marth and Roy?" and checking out the series.

Smash Brothers is obviously a fun game, but it is also a bit of a marketing tool - most of the characters have an obvious or semi-obvious tie in to another product that nintendo offers to some degree. There are Dragon Quest games for a number of nintendo consoles, with the current newest one (11) coming to switch as a re-release/remaster/version with good music.

Chrono Trigger, while possibly the best game ever made, doesn't have much forward momentum in 2019 and honestly I'm not sure I'd want current square working on it - given how Final Fantasy 13, 14, and 15 released. The FF7 remake is looking good so far, but it would take a Capcom level of "we've revived multiple franchises successfully" across several years before I'd want a "new" Chrono Trigger.

The marketing thing is extra obvious when you look at the spring Direct this year. Over 5 minutes of it was suspiciously taken up by Dragon Quest stuff and treated as this super popular IP that everyone knows about despite its tiny Western presence (yes I know it's massive in Japan).

Even if we didn't have the leaks and the "Brave" datamine something was definitely off about that back then.

EDIT: February Direct not spring

I can't believe they're in guys!

Banjo Kazooie is great and all, but the legacy still needs Geno.

Also, I've never heard of Richter. Isabelle, Bayonetta and Corin.

Probably many others too, lord knows I haven't played Smash too regularly since 2009.

But maybe it's time. My house got a new router recently that does let my Switch connect. But I love hard titles.

There's a lot to unpack, here.

Think of it like Inception where if the characters could imagine it, the people they're shooting at will think it's real and will act like it's real.
