Superhot VR removes scenes implying self harm citing "sensitive times", steam users lose it. - Can we no longer be trusted with adult themes and touchy subjects?

Thinking about how in the digital future all works of art can be censored on a whim is just... depressing. In fact, it makes me feel downright suicidal. You hear that, you cunts? Stop censoring your game or you'll be encouraging my suicide! You can do better than that. I deserve better than that.

Just like Disney+ going into Splash and poorly using the clone tool to cover up butt cracks in old movies.

No different than when puritans went around with chisels knocking dongs off old statues.

I heard the film Wanted did that, though I've not seen it myself.
if this is what I assume you mean, it worked for the tone of the movie. it doesn't belittle the the viewer, it's more calling him out. it's silly but fun, you should check it out.

The worst part is people actually buying the facebook headset.
if you want VR there aren't many options, the only available new WMR kit is $600 bucks minimum (if you can get your hands on it), index is $1000+ where half of the price is for gimmicky chinkshit tier controllers and base stations costing more than the 1.0 version before the hardware revision to reduce the price...

turns out (again) that consumers mostly buy on price. least with the steam deck gayben seemed to have listened to someone rightfully pointing out that if you price yourself out of the mainstream segment the mainstream will go with the cheaper competitor (and adopt whatever inferior tech it offers, see VHS. that's why lighthouse tracking is pretty much dead).

I don't know. Like I said, I've not seen the film, just heard it talked. I know the game starts off by calling the player fat and pathetic. The first 15 seconds of this video shows the scene. I don't know if there's more than that because I only played the demo when the game first came out.

As for books and films that insult the reader/viewer. I think they exist, they're just more passive aggressive about it. Doing it through the over use of irony, winks, and nods. I remember one of the X-Men films, they address the complaint that the suits were different than the ones in the comics by having Wolverine complain about it, and Cyclops saying "Would you prefer yellow spandex?" and they give a knowing look at the camera.

At the time, it was a small, and I'd say good natured jab at fanboys. Now so many films and TV shows are covered in layer after layer of thick irony making it seem like the thing you're watching is stupid and bad and not worth taking seriously at all. Re-enforced by writers that try desperately to drag stories away from their genre. Be that through "subverting exceptions", killing off beloved characters just for the sake of killing them, or trying to shoehorn in whatever political topic activists are angry about that day.

So they locked the discord due to backlash

i popped in there to call them faggots lol
should've asked them to do even better and delete the whole game. all this talk about suicide is very triggering!

never played the game, and it's been a few years since I watched the movie (never read the comic it's based on either). knowing most video game adaptions it's probably missing the point or doing it way too heavy handed.
all in all I'm still not really bothered by it since it's not really talking down to the viewer, more like "I was as pathetic as you, doesn't mean you have stay this way" which kinda gets expressed via the arc of the character. different intentions, most modern shit does lazy cardboard cutout as a stand-in for whatever "enemy" they want to make it about (and limp-wristed fantasize they could punch), like all the first order nazi imagery in star wars where only the swastika is missing.

What the fuck happened to WMR pricing? Weren't third parties selling them for 200-300? The chip shortage screwed the market that much?
I assume this means facebook isn't even making a profit from their own hardware, rather they make it up through their walled garden market approach or just plain data sales like is their bread and butter. Ridiculous.

I will say that suicide is subject matter that should be handled carefully, but to say it shouldn't be handled at all is absurd.

Just like Disney+ going into Splash and poorly using the clone tool to cover up butt cracks in old movies.

The fact that in 1984 it was ok for a family friendly movie to have a brief bare female butt, but decades later it suddenly isn't ok makes zero sense to me.

it's more like oculus has supplanted the budget WMR headsets entirely, and they stopped trying to compete in the "cheap as balls" market. the WMR headsets that are priced between oculus and the index have comparative features to justify the price.

facebook is even experimenting with putting ads in games... please don't buy oculus.

But how exactly did they supplant it? The quest has inbuilt hardware but it's weaker than an actual pc even mid range. Altogether a setup capable of running vr games at a decent framerate with WMR would cost more than the cockulus, but for how long can the quest even support games built into it? It's essentially a mobile phone hardware wise. And you have the negative of it selling your data despite paying for hardware, having to be locked into Facebook's terrible marketplace, among multiple other problems. I guess for people having only experiences with consoles and being tech illiterate in most other areas I can understand it, but it's nonsense for the most part.

the quest is just worlds above any previous WMR headset at its price point in terms of hardware quality and user experience. you can tether the quest to your PC. it supports PC VR play over USB-C *and* wi-fi. so it's not only a standalone headset, it's a tethered PC headset, *and* a wireless PC headset, if you want to take the hit on visual quality and input lag. it's a good deal. the best deal, really, so long as you're willing to sell your soul.

if people thought about the long term value of their money and morality of companies they consoom from, the console market and facebook wouldn't exist.

Moron executives at Disney hired people to find everything that is "problematic" in their content. Not realising these people are puritans and will endlessly find things to justify their existence. Even so far as making sure animals are voiced by people of the right ethnic background in their theme parks.

It's the classic case of people going, "we need to be progressive" and hiring a bunch of people from woke studies, actually thinking they have expertise in something. Not realising they're just about destroying everything.

Bold of you to assume most of them arent "progressive" themselves and either dont know or dont care what they are destroying
