All of my 1970s and 80s paperbacks are crumbling, and the more heavily read stuff from the 90s are starting to degrade. My 90s stuff was around a lot less cigarette smoke, so that buys a little time, but it is inevitable.

They start to yellow, then turn brown. At that point they're stupidly brittle. You'll turn a page and several pages will just break down the middle.

Lower quality paper seems to kind of slow it down, too, oddly. Pulp cowboy story paperbacks from the 50s make it a few decades longer and those were printed on garbage.
