Yes, the Watergate affair gave a big boost to this whole 'journalists as heroes' narrative, but I think there was always a segment of the population very trusting of the NYT, it was just more confined to the the "chattering classes" (which was not the same as the business elite at the time, otherwise the USA would go full communist even before WWII). Citizen Kane only attacked the bad guy Hearst, not Mr Sulzberger, same way it's permissible now to attack Rupert Murdoch, but not the current Sulzberger and Bezos.
