I thought the last two decades and the rise of social media was just a crash course of how western shonen fans take even the dumbest and most meaningless work aimed at the kind of people who watch SpongeBob before their parents drop them off at school and trying to interpret it like it’s the key to solving the mysteries of the universe, and getting what could be argued as WAY too invested in hypothetical fights with characters outside their universe.Because Shonen fans are, or at least back then were, retarded teenagers. They wanted more Goku, explosions and end of the world stakes. Toriyama was likely trying to pivot towards Gohan becoming the main character with saiyaman being his grand re-introduction as an adult, but was told to bring back Goku by his editors since the retarded teenage fans were pissing and moaning about it.
I feel like Akira Toriyama was just the antithesis of TFS and the modern day anime fan, alongside his body of work.
