They were? That implies they stopped. I thought the last two decades and the rise of social media was just a crash course of how western shonen fans take even the dumbest and most meaningless work aimed at the kind of people who watch SpongeBob before their parents drop them off at school and trying to interpret it like it’s the key to solving the mysteries of the universe, and getting what could be argued as WAY too invested in hypothetical fights with characters outside their universe.

I feel like Akira Toriyama was just the antithesis of TFS and the modern day anime fan, alongside his body of work.

I ain't digging through their old stuff, but I do remember in a commentary either Kaiser or Lani and Kaiser mentioning they did not like Videos character arc and that it was bad. I do not remember anymore details

I am talking about the retarded Japanese teenage fans. Japan back then, and even now though to a much lesser extent, couldn't give less of a fuck about the western audiences opinions.

So I guess it was a different type of caring way too much about this shit. Whatever those teenagers were looking for, I feel like Akira Toriyama may have not been the guy to give it to them.
 
I wonder how many people remember that Lanipator is the originator of the "FFFFUUUU-" scream. The original video is lost to time, but there was a backup uploaded 13 years ago.

I think I may know what you're talking about, because they complained about the exact same thing with ChiChi. They don't dislike the character, they dislike the fact that female fighters in DragonballZ get married, get pregnant, then completely cease to be relevant in the plot going forward.

Ignoring that android 18 is still participating in the plot all the way up until the end of Super of course.

Yeah it was because they quit fighting and became house wives. Ignoring the fact that, you know, it's Japan and especially back then that's what women did. Reminds me of people who read Death Note and thought Ray Pember deserved to die because he told his fiancée to quit law enforcement once they got married.

It's just Americans refusing to accept that American standards are not universal.

It's not even true for Bulma, who continued to be a mainline character in a lot of arcs. With Videl they usually talk about the beatdown in the world championship, despite Gohan getting just as harsh one in Namek as an 8 year old.

They probably did, but with Gohan, remember that crazy fans have a habit of latching to their ridiculous ships even when the author himself shoots them down. Videl existing ruins it so she must die.

How the DBZ franchise handles writing women does deserve some criticism HOWEVER clearly the message was received because we've seen plenty of female fighters in the franchise by now. It's such an outdated criticism at this point especially since 18 is married and always willing to fight.

Does the thing created and marketed specifically to young boys in the late 80s-90s really deserve criticism for not having more strong women? If anything I think we should be impressed they don't spend most of their panel time getting upskirted or having beach episodes.

Well you see, in the minds of people like Kaiser, every country on earth for all of modern history has had the same cultural standards as current year California. So this was a completely backwards move for this 1980s comedy manga specifically made for teenage boys, and subsequent anime, to not make every single woman a strong independent character.

You see this in other contexts too. A fun example I can think of off the top of my head is Zwarte Piet, Dutch Santa's helper. No one in the Netherlands cared about this for centuries but in the last decade or so a bunch of Americans found out about it and decided "Well in our culture he's offensive!". So now he's been more or less erased from their cultural practices.
