When did this happen?
During their R/S nuzlocke, they cheated the fight with Winona because her Altaria ate their party entirely. They didn't have any replacement content setup, so they decided to redo the fight with a different strategy. It was caught when autists noticed that EXP for certain Pokémon was different during the Winona fight that during the immediately preceding fight. When called on it, they admitted to it and released a "lost tape" of Winona eating their party.

At least they owned up to it. I feel like they could have easily did some DSP thing and go on a meltdown while on the defensive.

so crazy to think that i watched every episode of this when it was new, and even then i could kinda feel that they were grasping at straws to stay relevant

TFS started faltering/getting stale when they started the Android saga tbh. I think it's because they topped themselves with how they reimagined the Ginyu Force and Frieza, and that was LittleKuriboh at his peak. Wonder if they felt that but were in denial over it.

Making Future Trunks a serious character was a mistake. It went from a parody to a weird retelling in the Android saga. They tried to do "character development" and just turned DBZA into a fanfic.

That pretty much sums it and the later part of HUA

Well yeah, Future Trunks was Kaiser's Waifu, of course he'd try and make him perfect.

It's telling how much the quality of DBZA cratered the more TFS's heads got up their own asses about how good they were. Like, they wrote the Crack head version of DBZ - and did irreparable damage to its fandom, considering how many people still try and claim DBZA is the superior way to watch Dub - and tried to pivot to high art.

They were a group in the right place at the right time, and got the anime apparently no one else wanted to try and Abridge. It made them Big, and it got into their heads - I still mostly blame Kaiser - that they knew better than Toriyama. It's made it all the more amusing that everything else they've tried since killing the Golden Goose has been a failure.

Lani had already tried once before with the Naruto Abridged guys, which prompted a collaborative effort across what was the entire hobby at the time. LK joining as Frieza is what legitimized them more than anything, and was why DBZA went from a collaborative side project to their main focus.

I think the episode that signalled the most about the downfall was the one with Krillin (or was it Piccollo?) investigating baby cell rampage as if it was a horror story. I was wondering where all the jokes went into.

In general the humour just stopped. It was either gay references or head canon rather than the previous situational humour.

Ye, but SAO was shit from the box. There's only so much you can do with garbage before going "Fuck it, might as well use fanfic logic and try to make this shit suck less."
Honestlly, SAO went from "mediocre" to "utterly shit and irredeemable" at the very end of the first season where the villain is asked why he trapped so many people in a death game and what his goals were and he just goes "Dunno lol, I forgor!"

An from what I got it only got worse as it continued on.

Sounds like what happened with Sword Art Online Abridged.
Difference is SAO Abridged is made by a group who actually like the series but recognizes the glaring flaws and is just trying to have fun with it.

TFS probably were fans at one point, but they had the mistake of having a purist among them and he happened to be the editor, and thus got it into his head that he held the controls.

SAO Abridged also went down in quality after the first season. Too much screaming and gir bossing for no real reason. I could understand Kirito behaving like an actual gamer, why change the sister so much?

TFS seems the classic case of believing their own hype to the point they actually thought they are better than Toriyama rather than having only 1% of his ability.
