The problem is he was the only one with the work ethic to push them along to the finish line. Lani and Taka constantly lost interest in their own projects. Lani was the editor for their Let's Plays, but kept delaying them so Gan had to take over. Taka didn't know how to edit or really do anything aside from make jokes and funny voices. Neighborhood Cluck had some funny moments, but they never would have done the full series or even just finished the movies at the rate they were going.

If he could just stop taking himself so fucking seriously and rein his ego in a little, it would have gone a long way.

Classic founders dilemma. Founders who don't want to put the effort in anymore are slowly but surely cowed into giving more and more responsibility and therefore control to the one(s) who keeps things trucking forward.

Naturally the working founder uses that new control to effectively take over and run things their way, which tends to result in them doing things that go against the guiding ethos that gained the founders their success in the first place. In this case turning the DBZ abridged series into an ultra gay re-dubbing.

Also them rewriting plot points to add "depth" to the arc annoyed the shit out of me. Android 16 being modeled after Gero's son wasn't important to the story but now it not only becomes a plot point but Goku is now directly responsible for killing Gero's son as a kid. Android 16 giving Gohan an encouraging speech about the importance of fighting to preserve the lives of those you hold dear was fine, but what that scene REALLY needed was for him to dress Gohan down and tell the eleven year old to "grow up." Goku's week spent relaxing with his family leading up to the Cell Games cut out, both for a joke about Chi Chi trying for another kid and to further their depiction of him as a shit father who doesn't know anything about his own son. Also the weird bit they added where Cell apparently killed Trunks after he already succeeded in his mission and was using the time machine to go back and meet his dad. In general, it seems like they really got carried away with their non-comedic rewrites during that saga.

This one is probably the most egregious example and easily the worst bit of "writing" TFS ever did.

16 being Gero's son was actually something that Toriyama said in an interview. When it got brought up in the show, Krillin even called it out as saying it sounded like something that was just made up. But then they decided to use it and added in new animation of Gero Jr. dying to Goku without even being ready for the fight.

But yeah, the whole dressing down Gohan thing really pissed me off because, as they even point out in that episode, he's 11. Cell calling him a coward and shit is fine because he's the villain, though it still annoyed me because you can tell they believe it, but having 16 reinforce the idea was just shitty. Kaiser actually justifies this in the commentary for that episode with this long rant that's basically "We need to stand up to Trump" without actually saying those words, about how people with power need to stop kowtowing to evil or some shit. It was just masturbatory "I'm so smart and morally right" bullshit.

I know. My point was that it was a tidbit that didn't need to be incorporated into the arc, let alone in the forced manner that TFS did.

I had no idea about this. First the Yu-Gi-Oh abridged series and now this. No idea why abridged series creators feel they need to have any input on this shit.

It started as a hobby in their 20's, it got big, and by their 30's it's what they do full time for a living. It's like game journalists who thought writing about video games was just a temporary thing and one day they'd move to a more prestigious publication, it never happened, so as a cope they started taking their job way too seriously. First as a push to prove themselves as legitimate so they'd get picked up by who they wanted to be working for, and then they kept doubling down to try and transform their niche into what they wanted it to be.

Have any of these TFS people done anything of note to stand up to the tyranny of Orange Frieza or do they just tweet? Cause it's certainly something to demand others act while you sit in your house anger tweeting.

I agree that they shouldn't have moved to being so serious, but since that's what ended up happening I will say the one serious addition I don't mind is this interaction between Cell and Trunks because this callousness fits Cell pretty well.

Probably rant, get drunk, rant and block people on Twitter. Maybe a charity donation to some trans or gay thing, but I have my doubts about that. Kaiser always struck me as the greediest/stingiest of the bunch.

They, like many liberals, are under the delusion that angry tweeting from the safety of their homes is fighting Orange Frieza. Protests, marching for change, lobbying the government, or even just calling your local representative to voice your issues, is something that other people need to do. They're too important to bother themselves with actually doing something.

He did, actually. Though what I understand is that he tried to avoid the clichés too hard.

The idea is that Freeza tried to pull a bigger gambit on Goku instead of just blasting him [led him to his ship and set it to start, then he blasted the glass window so Goku would die in space], but that backfires. King Cold assumes that this means Freeza is soft and weak and decides he's worthless, so he demotes him and Freeza is forced to flee into outer space with nothing. King Cold makes a new 'child' who is just Chaotic Evil and has zero redeeming traits and that backfires hard, so Freeza being 'good' is just structured as him having to live like a normie and stop King Cold's idiocy.

Then there was a sequel but I didn't pay attention to it.
