I thought the Saiyaman arc was universally disliked.
It mostly is. I still really like it though.

I'm already a sentai fan and I think the more low-stakes superhero work/"trying to balance being normal and a superbeing" stuff is cool. I like Gohan and Videl as a couple too, which helps.

I wish the Saiyaman stuff lasted longer before sprinting towards the Tournament shit.

it came back in dragon ball super at least…

YGOTAS was always best when it was spoofing the weird stupidity of the original series.
It worked because Martin was an adult when he started watching the original, found it stupid but fun, and poked at it from a place of riffing. TFS on the other hand were all kids who grew up on DBZ and loved it. Kaiser admitted he used to mutter "Kaioken" to get through difficult moments. And most other abridgers were similar, they watched YGOTAS because they were fans of the original and liked poking fun at it, and then when they tried to copy LK's formula, they went for things they'd grown up on instead of something they'd never seen before and thought was ridiculous but still fun.

And I'll admit, I'm one of them, I grew up on DBZ and YGO (Even played the card game) and I still have some fondness for them. But I'm also adult enough to make fun of them and not add the reverence that TFS does.

I wish he kept the outfit as his main, much better than just Goku's Gi again.

The duel between evil Marik and ghost Marik and Bakura still lives rent free in my head, all these years later.

MELVIN: If you're done fighting with your girlfriend, we have a card game to finish.
FLORENCE: He's not my girlfriend!
MARIK: You tell him, honey!

Looking back, Cell responding to Tien with "Was Krillin busy?" was such a brutal put down. TFS may have gone off the rails, but they were really good at breaking these (admittedly not that deep) characters down to their essence for parody.

He repeatedly denied that was what he was doing in the days after its first upload.

Either he's lying to a legion of people criticizing his writing, or he's committing historical revisionism like George Lucas.
I’m gonna go with historical revisionism. Even one of the writers of Back to the Future 2 came back three decades later to say “um akshually biff was ALWAYS based on the bad orange man” when he knew it would put him in the spotlight.

The jokes about Goku being a bad father were horrible, but the jokes about Gohan having issues because of all the shit he was going through were great and something that was never really touched on in the original story.
imagine if they sticked to that

Oh yeah, there's some good moments in there that still hold up and show that they understood these characters and why they were so beloved. Unfortunately they got too full of themselves.

I mean... he clearly always was. Remember that Trump was a big name as far back as the 80s. Funnily enough he was actually considered a progressive back then for all of the opportunities he gave black people at that time.

As for Kaiser, I think he just knew back then that the Trump thing was kind of cringe so he avoided it, but now that progressives believe unless you're constantly hating Trump you're his ally, he's admitting it.

Looking back, I'm not sure why the saiyaman stuff was so hated in the first place. Gohan helping people out as a low-stakes, kinda dorky superhero is pretty in line with his character and kinda fun.

Because Shonen fans are, or at least back then were, retarded teenagers. They wanted more Goku, explosions and end of the world stakes. Toriyama was likely trying to pivot towards Gohan becoming the main character with saiyaman being his grand re-introduction as an adult, but was told to bring back Goku by his editors since the retarded teenage fans were pissing and moaning about it.

For me, Gohan in high school just didn’t have the whimsy of OG Dragonball nor the action of what I expected in DBZ. It’s the kind of anime arc you’re surprised to find out wasn’t filler.

Admittedly it doesn't really fit with what came before it, but I still had fun with it. A shame we never got to see what TFS would have done with it, but they probably would have skipped past it, despite there being plenty of material there.

Considering how they made Videl an SJW wannabe Batman though... yeah, probably a good thing they've quit.
