Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Missed when youtube didn't block adblocker. Probably someway to circumvent having to watch an ad but just too lazy to look. Fuck adverts and fuck the govt.
Came to rant about YouTube's out of control ads. I like to play YT videos on my phone as background noise while I game on my PC and last I checked, it's a bit of a hassle setting up adblock on your phone compared to a PC, so I decided to just bear with the inconvenience of having to hit skip ad occasionally.

But Jesus Christ it's gotten bad. YT plays 2 ads at the start of every video and then every 3 mins afterwards. And if you don't skip an ad, they will play what feels like a full length movie just to advertise some fucking soap or a car. This is insane. I think this is one of the few times "dystopian" is actually accurate here. They might actually see users as literal bugmen.

Wtf is actually going on up there that they think any of this is OK?

I'm pretty sure I'm repeating myself, I miss computer cases not just having external drive bays, but really having room for a bunch of internal drives. There were some cases having 8 internal drive bays in addition to external drive bays. Now you are lucky to get 4 internal drive bays and two of them are only for 2.5" drives. I know the usual response it "get a nas bro" but they are expensive and I don't want/need one. I just want to be able to slap in another drive while still being able to use the ones already in my system damn it. Also, I wish external drives were cheaper. It would be nice to have a decent sized external drive purely for backing shit up.

If you can find a case with enough external 5.25 you can convert them to external hot swap or internal. Also, rack mount cases.

And an external drive is just an internal drive+enclosure, so take an internal and stick it in the usb box.

I too have made the mistake of using Youtube without adblockers.

I've yet to see someone actively watch ads though. Most people shrug, look away, and tap the skip button.

I can't remember one single ad I was advertised with.

A couple years ago this was an acceptable inconvenience; free hour long videos and all I have to do it just tap a button once in a while, no big deal.
But now it's gotten so frequent that the effort of tapping the skip ad button twice with a 30 second interval every 3 minutes is not worth the video.

At this point I'm convinced they're aware that majority of videos are watched now as bg noise and are banking on us having to choose between just letting the 5 minute ad play to completion or reaching over to hit skip every 3 minutes. I've even read some people say the app uses your phone's proximity sensor to determine when you're not near it and chooses to play the longest ads when you're not.

Either way fuck YouTube. I'm moving on to Newpipe or Revanced.

Edit:

Using Revanced feels like how I imagine (respectfully) a person who went deaf and gained their hearing back feels. Being able to put on a video, leave the phone on the table and prepare dinner 20 ft away, without thinking about 5 minutes ads interrupting your flow seems like a reasonable expectation.

Jesus Christ YouTube, you provided this experience for FREE, and took it all away because of greed. Well fuck every single decision maker there. I'm never looking back. I hope every user installs an adblocker and their ad revenue crashes as a result.

You get a SAS PCIe card. You can even ghetto rig the setup and use a case and a small power supply to power the drives and run a SAS pigtail to the drives from the back of your computer.
BTW: You can hook sata drives to the SAS cards with the pigtails.

You get a PCIe card.

Both my pcie slots are used up. One is taken by my graphics card (x16 3.0 slot) and the other is taken up by a riser card for an nvme SSD (x4 2.0 slot).

If you're on android look into Newpipe, it'll help sort your issue out. As a bonus, you can have it start up on a blank page so you don't get spammed with shit recommendations, and you can export your subscriptions into a single file which you can then use on invidious instances.

You're a bit fucked if you use an iPhone.

For PC, I've been using FreeTube which ignores ads and sponsorblock, and helps with privacy.
