Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Libre Office runs most MS Office documents fine. You can even configure it to save as .Docx and .Xlsx by default. There is some slight variation in formulas between Excel and Libre Calc, though.
One other key difference I've noticed between LibreOffice/OpenOffice and excel is how arguments are typed into formulas. Excel separates them with commas and Open/Libre Office uses semicolons. Example:

Excel: =AVERAGE(C1, C4, C7)
Libre/OpenOffice: =AVERAGE(C1; C4; C7)

I'd hope the translation is automatic between the two, but it's something to be mindful of switching back and forth between the two.

I hate the fucking share and sign-in buttons everywhere too. I just want a simple fucking spreadsheet program that is compatible with everyone else's, but it's littered with all this shit.
I hate that Word doesn't want to default to My Documents (or its equivalent) and instead wants to use either the last directory you used or a network share/internet site. I'd prefer it keep the assumption that the file should be stored locally on the same device unless otherwise specified.

Speaking of annoying MS shit - aggressively pushing their services in Win 10. I have no interest in setting up a microsoft account or using onedrive but every now and then when I boot up a windows machine it will hit me with a blue screen with "Lets finish setting up your device" asking me to make an account, give them my phone number and set up onedrive. There is no option for "fuck off, no" only "yes" and "maybe later". You have to go root around in the settings to disable this shit.
I think I may have mentioned this before, but less elegantly. I get the exact same thing on the Windows 10 PC I use for my primary job. I could be wrong and it comes up at a fixed interval, but the screen seems to pop up randomly at sign-in. I, too, hate the fact there is no option for "Don't ask me again." I've yet to look to see if there's any sort of registry hack to make it go away forever.

Also, windows security center giving a warning if onedrive isn't set up. Me not wanting to use your shitty cloud service is not a security threat, fuck off.
I also agree here. Not having a computer unnecessarily attached to an internet acocunt seems like better security -- at least from what I still remember from my CS degree's Operating Systems class.

EVERYTHING is done using word, excel, etc. Is there some easy way to assimilate those files on linux so I could get sent an email with an excel file or something, eaily run it, then send it back on something that users could run if they didn't have linux?
Linux has an office suite called Libreoffice which can use files from Excel and the like.

I use Libre/OpenOffice everyday and I have never experienced this. I in Libre use , in functions and they work fine. I'd guess that Libre is more permissive when separating function parameters.

The worst part is I can't even find older laptops in my area. I did notice the newer ones seem warmer and louder, and they don't even have a fucking disc drive. I don't get why people want thin laptops. You put it in a bag, take it to work/school or whatever and then put it in a desk. It's hardly impractical even if it's slightly bigger.
I especially blame tech journalists/reviewers for the phone trend, with them demanding thinner and thinner phones, with screens that reach edge to edge so that you get to enjoy both mis-presses and a shattered screen from small falls. Not to mention phones becoming a status/fashion symbol, and the stupid glass back fad.

I miss my bulky laptop that ran cool, which ultimately I accidentally destroyed trying to take it apart while a screw was still in the chassis.

Do laptops still have normal USB ports?

Or is Apple making ones with only those stupid micro ports, and the other companies are copying that "innovation"?

USB C is genuinely a great step for the USB standard, with some versions of them (the version naming is horrible however) able to transmit video, as well as support up to 90 watt power delivery.

Are you thinking of thunderbolt? That was a bit of a mess, and apple has gone back to using USB C for the most part now, I believe.

A possible sliver of hope in the fight against planned obsolescence:
So why arent custom laptops a thing already when we already have custome desktops? I get there is the issue of the screen, but it seems you could find some way around it, as for the case just 3D print.

You should look into the Thinkpad modding scene, which is about as close as you can get for now. Mad Chinamen are even designing and selling original new custom motherboards.
How much of my info goes straight to the CCP? Not like there are any other places that produce parts, but built in spyware is a serious issue.

That's a good question and one I don't have an answer for, you'd think there were would be lots of options for that by now but there aren't. All we have is a handful of companies that sell "barebones" kits that aren't really all that barebones.

Did you look at the site? its all eco-faggotry, they dont explain how the fuck they get around the fact mobile CPUs are all soldered now, are they placing the thing in a custom removable board? on an ultrabook? and what about the GPU which is the #1 reason old gaming laptops end in a landfill?

You know what was a real gamechanger? the ARA phone, but google being the giganiggers they are had to kill it

Make laptops and phones like that and you cut 2/3 of all ewaste

First time I hear about the custom motherboards, link?

I thought the main environemtnal issue with laptops and other tech devices was the batteries? And the plastic.

Yes but thats not the reason people toss laptops since you can still get spare batteries for those (except applefags as usual)

With a gaming laptop you're looking at two years of actual use and just downgrading from there until you cant run shit anymore, but its not like you can swap the GPU and CPU out anymore, not since the death of MXM and all CPU becoming BGA

There doesn't seem to be much organized information out there, since this is all strictly amateur and a violation of Lenovo's IP.
The forums on 51nb.com are where the mad Chinamen behind the motherboards congregate if you want to go digging around in there.
English-speakers tend to either go to Reddit or the Thinkpad forums:
https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=80

A couple of reviews with teardowns:
http://www.cnmod.cn/2019/06/05/51nbs-x210-review-a-faithful-recreation/
https://pcper.com/2018/07/51nb-thinkpad-x210-mod-review-from-an-alternate-reality/

The custom motherboards are proprietary so there aren't any schematics or anything like that. You do have to take it on trust, but the massive autists in the Thinkpad scene seem to be fine with it.
