Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

As much as I like using 2-factor authentication for the obvious things like Gmail, Facebook, and Instagram, I'm getting absolutely fucking sick of EVERY site now doing it by default, and making me verify my identity if I don't visit the site for more than a month. My gas and utilities do this shit: I pay my gas bill once a month, and every time I login to check my account it redirects me to a prompt saying they don't recognize my computer and IP address, so they force me to sign in using some 5-digit code sent to me via text. Verizon does this same thing too whenever I log into my account for my phone billing, as well as my online banking despite how my login screen has the checkbox ticked for "remember my info and keep me logged in." I think Amazon and eBay do this now too.

Isn't that due to shit like websites being designed with mobile users in mind? Most people have phones, most people only use the internet for social media, youtube, google, etc. Phones can do all of this, so I bet that most people don't even own a regular PC at this point.

I'm really considering looking into linux, but how do people find it when EVERYTHING is done using word, excel, etc. Is there some easy way to assimilate those files on linux so I could get sent an email with an excel file or something, eaily run it, then send it back on something that users could run if they didn't have linux?
I'm not a huge PC guy, but I am really noticing things being slow on windows 10, especially when office is open. Add in the constant fucking updates, and the fact I know MS is spying on me and I really just want to look into alternatives, but everyone else just uses MS and Windows so I feel it would be inconvenient to switch.
Ohh, you think that Linux distro isn't spying on you too? It is, unless you've made it yourself. If you want privacy, use a VPN, use PiHole, and use Ad blockers. Also, STAY AWAY from Facebook services if possible. WhatsApp is... Ok, but Signal or even Telegram are better. IG is as bad as FB. Use DuckDuckGo and Brave if possible.

I guess I would have to use Office then. I don't use spreadsheets that often, but I do need to use them for important things and that stuff is sent via excel, and the person would expect it back, and run it through excel. I wish places atleast offered an alternative, at this point you don't stay with MS due to quality, you stay with MS due to the sheer fucking size and pervasiveness of it, it's so fucking dumb people will buy new smartphones every fucking year, but God forbid you move from some ancient software. If you had a choice would you go with Libre over Office? Would you say it's better overall?
Office 100%. It's just BETTER than anything else out there, it's not even funny. Excel alone is worth buying. Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, and the other stuff are just fun little extras.

LibreOffice is literally years behind MS, if not a decade plus.

Look at it this way, even APPLE, the walled garden pricks they are, couldn't out compete MS in an office suite on their own OS and software ecosystem. Oracle couldn't, Sun couldn't, and OpenOffice couldn't.

Hell, MS may very well retire the old NT version of Windows in a a decade and literally make Windows a special Linux distro. What they will continue to do is sell Office subscriptions and boxed copies for decades more. They actually decided to keep selling perpetual Office licenses past Office 2019 (new one is 2022) because their user base said sell us a one and done or we'll stop at 2019 and never buy a 365 subscription.

I complained a couple of pages back about the "finish windows set up" screen you now get on win 10 asking for your personal details.

I disabled it through the settings but a recent update overrode the settings and its back. Microsoft really wants my phone number and for me to set up onedrive. This is honestly ridiculous and pathetic putting this invasive shit in the OS and overriding user settings through an update. They are only getting away with it because they are an effective monopoly and all people can do is impotently complain about Microsoft shoving their fist deeper in their ass.

Ah, a Google voice number solves that little issue really fast. Or a prepaid phone number. I view OneDrive like any other cloud storage provider.

This is why I like courts. They are packed with boomers. I used to deal with one where they still used WordPerfect. That was in 2010. Another insists on documents from nothing newer than a '90s version of Word. Beautiful. Based boomers with no tolerance for this new-fangled shit.

Also, I am oddly comforted by Courier New and Times New Roman.

I don't really like shopping but like a lot of people find myself mindlessly browsing Amazon recently during COVID lockdown. Holy shit Amazon is awful and I don't remember it being this bad a few years back.

You search for something or look at a category and the first page is littered with 'Featured' results which are usually irrelevant trash. That is bad enough but even the filters don't work. Like I specifically go to the Switch games category and half of the results are shitty third party controllers or screen protectors or whatever, these ain't the games I'm after Amazon. I try to filter out based on price and still get shit loads of results outside of the price range. I assume this is because certain companies pay Amazon to push their results up the list but there is nothing obvious flagging these as ads.

Can't even fucking consoom in peace without these pricks trying to market other shit to you.

It really has gotten terrible. My dad was looking for something and he searched for the exact model number and still had trouble finding what he was looking for.

Even Google's results are absolute fucking garbage. It used to be the model number would instantly take you to relevant hits for the exact thing. Somehow not even Google can manage that now. At some point these people all need to be publicly executed and we need a real search engine again.

I don't even know who to blame. Oh wait, yeah I do. I fucking blame troons!

I heard that's why Google has gone on a killing spree in recent years against their products and services. All the people who created the were fired in favor of diversity hires and now no one knows how to maintain them.

yeah google has been absolute shit for years, its kinda crazy that some people are just starting to notice the circa-2016 neutering of results, might just be habit and a decade at the top. Even DDG which spent many years being terrible is consistently better, and there's SearX and Yandex to pick up the slack.

Amazon is one of those monopolies who without their core competency of logistics has very little to offer. They really do offer everything under the sun but with merged review pages, endless fake reviews, and terrible management of pages of products with near identical serial numbers/SKUs. Its bound to result in disappointment for the customer but the reality is people don't care. They've traded any notion of humanity or quality for convenience, and unlike other convenience over quality debates (BT vs wired, streaming versus downloading/physical media) there's a real effect on the economy that is felt by everyone.

Like i'm all for dinosaurs like Sears to die but the petty excuses of why brick&mortar or even other ecommerce giants aren't good enough are petty, there's only small victories like getting all the zoomers who are moving to PC to shop at Microcenter.

And it's not like CuckCuckBlow even got any better, it's just that Scroogle is such absolute shit that even its competitors are now better. Never mind the blatant and open content censorship. The Farms is one of the more blatant examples. Look at how many searches now that the Farms would be the top hit by any reasonable metric and yet you can't see a single Farms hit.

Fuck that shithole, everyone there should be put against a wall or into a guillotine.

I considered adding a Minecraft clause to this but I can't bring myself to do it.

Damn. And I really like Office 2003 too...

Ohh yes. Amazon is flogging their in-house brands HARD now. Once you get past that trash (95% is literally just copied from better products and made of Chinesium) you then wade through a bunch of drop shipped Alibaba junk.

If you know the EXACT model/SKU you want it's ok. These days, I'm seriously trying to limit my Amazon purchases as much as possible.

For me, electronics are now purchased at Microcenter is at all possible. If I find something cool on Amazon, I'll try and track down the actual manufacturer and they usually BEAT Amazon's prices. I don't mind waiting 1-3 days longer to get something if I can avoid a overworked Amazon worker throwing whatever "looks like" my purchase into the bin in the warehouse. (I used to be one so I know how awful those places are). Also, eBay can be pretty good too.

Imagine ending up the richest man in the world by delivering the worst service in human history delivering the wrong shit to people who wanted something else and this makes you some kind of fucking hero. Welcome to Clown World.

A week ago I got an e-mail from MS saying that all the files on my OneDrive will soon be deleted because it's been unused for two years. I don't have a OneDrive, I have an MSDN account and Windows uses local login. It's not a phishing e-mail either. They really want people to use that service.

Not even then, because Amazon pools together all sellers' stock of the same SKU in their warehouses and fulfills all orders from that common heap. So if some sleazy third-party seller says they have that SKU, but really has some cheap substitute or fake, it can "pollute" the whole pool.
