I will stop missing CRTs as soon as there's a single LCD monitor that is as good as the Trinitron.

Recently dug out an old CRT I had in storage. I used a 5:4 secondary LCD monitor anyway, so the CRT is a little smaller, but has the same resolution. And it feels good. So fast and crisp. I initially just used it for playing Star Wars KOTOR, but now it's unironically my main monitor for gaming, despite the aspect ratio.
CRTs are good.

They're not filled with helium. It's for saturation diving where you're in an environment of high pressure and high helium content in the air for extended periods of time. The watch will accumulate helium inside it, and in order to prevent the watch from exploding upon depressurization, a valve is often installed to allow the pressure to release.

Although, to be honest, old computers tend to have shitty fans and be annoyingly loud at times. I like the lower sound level emitted from modern computers, but I do admit that the clicky-clacky noise of floppy drives did have some charme...

I miss the IR port on my old HTC phone. You could ditch all your remotes, change the channel straight from the TV guide app, mess with TVs in public... IIRC the Gameboy Color had an IR port too, so you could probably hack yourself a Mew or something with it too.

Problem is, modern graphic cards only seem to have HDMI ports. With DVI ports it's no problem to plug in a CRT, but I think with HDMI you need a more involved converter.
Guess I won't be upgrading my computer anytime soon, and stick with my GTX970.

You can get a HDMI to RGB converter pretty cheap these days. I've got one. Pretty handy when I was on the training circuit. The real embuggerance is converting DisplayPort to RGB. Daisy-chaining converters is a pain in the butt, let me tell you.

my PS3 can do both HDMI and CRT stuff like component. it got YLOD though and IDK how to fix it. one thing I definitly miss on the PS4 is the XMB menu. it may not be perfect but it had tons of potential

Aside from running a computer over it (everything being tiny and blurry), the picture over it looks OK to me. Colors can be fuzzy.

I kind of miss Usenet. I've been fooling with it a lot again lately. I made a couple of free.* newgroups, talking to the few people who are still on there. I wasn't even a big user and mostly just lurked during its heyday because I was only in my teens in the late 90s, but it seems so much better than Reddit in every conceivable way. I don't even understand the appeal of using Reddit over Usenet. Reddit basically only lets you post text and links to actual content just like Usenet. Reddit threads its conversations very similarly to Usenet. Anyone can create a subreddit that doesn't exist yet just like anyone can create a newsgroup that doesn't exist yet. There are a plethora of free text-only usenet providers who provide SSL, so it's not a cost thing. Then on top of being basically the same thing, Usenet lacks moderation and any kind of centralization, so you don't have to deal with bullshit like subreddit's turning into little fiefdoms and a big centralized tech company selling your data. I don't see any advantage to using Reddit other than being more usable on mobile, but if people were still on Usenet mobile apps would follow.


I guess finding a server and putting in a client, and subscribing to a few groups is just too much dicking around for most people so Reddit offering a /r/all feed and a address you type in your browser is enough to put up with its bullshit. I dunno.

I miss the Flash/Shockwave era and it's culture. HTML5 sucks major dick, at least in terms of entertainment in comparison to flash. (same goes for most Unity web games)
There are no HTML5 animations, there are no HTML5 hentai games, no HTML5 horror games like lomando.com, edgy gory games like Dad 'n Me, virtual hangouts like OMGPOP or Whirled, nothing. The only HTML5 games i can recall that weren't soulless mobile game ports were one or two okay .io sites and some small japanese browser games.
Dunno if this might be true, but i've also heard that HTML5 actually has worse performance than Flash and is more limited for some stuff like 3D.

You would think HTML5 replacing flash would mean at least people would learn a bit more of scripting to make fun flash games now, but the lack of ease-of-use that Macromedia/Adobe Flash had seems to have scared people away instead. 7 years from now, people will only remember HTML5 for bloated site slider animations and "fake multiplayer" bot-filled .io game clones.

It also means that usenet was a huge hub for child porn posting, back in the day. Even when the pedo newsgroups were dropped in their entirety from most servers, they would just make new newsgroups with innocuous names.

SCART was a european thing going way back. SCART supports s-video and component - pretty good so far - and supposedly resolutions up to 1080p.

The block is way bigger than you think it is, it's as wide as a cigarette lighter is tall, it's like HDMI with gigantism.
Adapters looked like that without the ribbon cable, you plugged the RCA(red, white, yellow, maybe s-video) in the back and it was then clonked into the TV almost like a cartridge. It had the USB problem of trying to insert it the wrong way, turning it around, it is still the wrong way, turning it again and now it's right somehow. I remember using it for my SNES back when the SNES was top dog, so it's both old and great and it had a good sound when plugging it in.

Call up Sony and see if you can still get it repaired out of warranty. I had to do that once and they wanted $100, but that was several years ago, when you could already buy a used one for like $150. Maybe the price has dropped, who knows.

The PS3 is a better general purpose media player than the PS4, and will probably stay that way going forward, at least until HEVC and 4k truly becomes the norm. So get that sumbitch repaired, they're not gonna be around forever.
