Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Christmas lights are needed to do those 170WPM coding challenges, apparently.

Never occurred to them that they could just not include the lights and it would have worked the same way? All they've done is needlessly make it slightly more expensive.

Admittedly RGB keyboards aren't as bad imo, it's shit like RGB fans and RAM that really get under my skin.

I hate phone drones. You know, the people who tie their self-worth to owning the latest iPhone MMXIV or whatever the fuck. I hate those people, and hope they drop their $900 phone into an active volcano, and then chase after it.

I recently learned that Apple News pushes notifications of news articles to these phones, by default. You have an entire nation that is being informed by clickbait headlines, beamed directly into their brains, in a manner that they do not know how to turn off.

I hate this technology and and I hate these people.

If it wasn't for that, it would be from twatter.

But, yeah. Social media was a mistake. As were smartphones. Honestly, when my current one carks it (which will be in 2023-4) I'm going to downgrade to a flippy dumbphone.

When it comes to phones one despicable thing hasn't been mentioned: phone salesmen and phone stores. The phone stores in malls are usually very small, when going inside one to look at something a salesman is immediately there trying to sell you shit or change your provider or upgrade your plan blah blah. I don't go into them anymore and I give the storefront itself a wide berth, the register is often so close to the entry that you can spit into the mouth of the salesman without setting foot in the store. Being so close to the foot traffic means that sometimes they will try to talk to you if you walk by and accidentally make eye contact.

If they have unfettered physical access to you as well, what's to stop them waterboarding you until you agree to unlock it for them or spill the password or pin.
Or just chop your hand off and bring it with them.
Being so close to the foot traffic means that sometimes they will try to talk to you if you walk by and accidentally make eye contact.
What's even worse is when they're in some kiosk literally in the foot traffic. Those kiosks are always full of some weird, scammy bullshit and often have assholes who harass you as you're walking by. When it isn't phones it's often some MLM scam shit.

I miss when Windows didn't keep pushing me to back up my data on OneDrive. It's cheaper to buy my own drive and back them up myself.

I might have posted this a year ago, if I saw the thread then. And I'm certain others have posted it if I haven't. But it still needs to be said, fuck powered windows. There's a problem that cured its solution. Not only are they less safe, they are one of the parts that always seems to fail on my cars so there goes a hundred or two down the drain fixing a totally unnecessary thing I didn't want. (powered steering a disaster in the making too, fuck most computer in a car tech to be honest.)

fuck most computer in a car tech to be honest
Cars with a glorified tablet stuck on the dashboard in lieu of proper instruments can get fucked too. Don't even get me started on gay shit like electronic parking brakes, proximity keys and stop/start engines...

Basically, fuck almost every car made after about 2010.

And it's working! I know a woman who's teenage son refused to rage at his stupid online vidya without an RGB keyboard and mouse. He pouted and was sullen when he got a new computer and it only had a heterosexual keyboard. If I was his dad I would be hiding in Africa to avoid child support payments, no wait let me try again: if I was his adoptive father I would beat him with the straight keyboard and then hide in Africa to avoid child abuse charges.
If I was his parent, I'd force him to use a nasty roll up keyboard from Goodwill and a junky wireless mouse until he has money for what he wants.

Why do you own a kindle? I have lots of books taking up space, but it's worth it. Amazon has the right to remove any books your purchase, and they have done so in the past.

"We won't do it again, we swear."
If you pay for books, you might as well own them. Or just lend some from your local library.

If you enjoy a kindle thats fine I guess. I just think people should stay away from them when you don't really own the product.
I now instantly download and convert them to epubs after they are purchased..... Or uhhh... "Get books for free"

There are much better e-readers out there not encumbered by Amazon bullshit. I like my Onyx Boox Note 3 despite the retarded spelling. Big screen, dual-color backlight, pen, runs regular Android (and supports Play Store and sideloaded apps), lots of storage, and cheerfully eats all the formats available on my friendly neighborhood Library Genesis mirror. Pricier than the el-cheapo Kindle model, but it's a much better product.
Kobo also makes a good product.

Color E ink has just hit the market too (holy shit for reading .pdfs/epubs with color images)

Remember the annoying RGB lighting trend with computers? Not even cars are safe from this menace of a trend now, as the reveal of the Mercedes-Benz EQS EV, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E show:

It's as if auto makers are trying to attract gamers, out of all people, to buy their cars these days.

And the Hyperscreen for the EQS screams of massive overkill with them. Also, having a vertical infotainment screen, like the one in the Mach-E, looks out of place in cars, in my opinion.

Out side of the touchscreen in the Ford it looks more like extra interior lights you would normally have (the lights at the center console and floors), and looks closer to natural light (although a bit more red) then normal RGB stuff. It isn't the assault on the eyes that the Benz is though.

I have never cared for touch screens and would much rather have an old-fashioned phone keyboard.

also i really miss those early-2000's chunky cd players. i dunno why.

I used to have one of these from 2000 on. Not a good one like that, but some Chinese piece of junk. I carried it around with me everywhere, so wanted something that I wouldn't care if it got the shit beat out of it constantly. It eventually fell apart after more abuse than Chinese junk usually takes.
