Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but I hate websites that don't let me open a link in a new tab by clicking mouse-3, and instead treat it as if I had left-clicked. Bestbuy's website does this with search results. I think this is another side effect of optimizations intended for mobile and tablet users.

Many sites seem to outright disable middle clicking. Even worse are sites that outright block right clicking in some idiotic misguided attempt to block plagarism or basic html edits with an inspect element tool, even though there are tons of ways around these filters. The web is babyproofed these days. I'd say it's not outright the fault of phones so much as the corporitization of the web and the sellout of web design to the lowest bidder.

When I one day accidentally figured out you could middle-click to open links in a new tab it was a total game-changer.

I hope this post fits here.. It is definitely a trend I dislike at least. Discord just announced some changes. Mainly aesthetics, but spun in words of diffuse inclusion:

They go on a long tirade on why and how they changed the logo, font, and color scheme. The result is not much different:

Now, I have my issues with discord but they are mainly tied to the fact that every channel I've been active in has sooner or later turned into a den of complete degeneracy (trannies and catbois). The change above might not be an improvement but I'm not going to be upset. The people in comment section, however, not so much. Just a random example:

Am I a boomer for shaking my head at this? Maybe. Was it surprising that discord messed up the least messed up thing on their product? Maybe not. Oh well..

I really wonder what the end result is going to be of this continual simplification of logos. Their logo was already incredibly basic and now they've removed half of it's already barely unique attributes. The average sentiment on this kind of corporate modern art b.s. seems to be negative from most people these days, I'd say it's true peak was when Apple made their OS 7 or whichever and got rid of all gradients, but once all other companies copied them like they always do it got boring, and yet it hasn't changed and has only gotten worse since. It seems to me Google's really been at the forefront of pushing this since Apple did in OS terms, but everyone including Microsoft has continued on this path. Not to mention how it's infected everything outside of tech as well.

But in Current Year, microwaves have all these settings for different crap, and you may not be able to cook for just 10 seconds to warm something up if the 1 is an "express button" that instantly starts cooking for 1 minute. The sad thing is there were some innovations in microwave ovens that would have made things pretty straightforward, making cooking common items actually easier, but they never caught on in the west.

Not a "simpler" interface, but it would have made microwaving food less of a guessing game with settings. This is the kind of complication that would have made sense rather than 50 million heat settings.

My in-laws have one of these microwaves. It works perfectly fine and I only ever use timer settings on microwaves anyway. Sometimes I think about just buying older appliances, seems like they work perfectly fine and last a long time. I do wonder if it's selection bias since you only notice the ones that still work and not ones that got thrown out for not working but maybe it really is as simple as everyone "upgraded" to the modern appliances when the old ones are superior in many ways.

I have one of these stupid ass things. And the interface is moronic. The process for entering time to cook is completely reversed from the way to enter time for a timer, and the process for entering the time to set the clock is completely different from those.

I had one of the bad boys with just two dials(one for power and one for time) up until around 2018 when it finally kicked the bucket.

I have a microwave with a dial (maybe some other buttons, who knows, i don't look) and it 'dings' when it's done. Much better than the old one i had where i had to type in the power, then how long i want to cook it for etc. It's not much of a ball-ache, but a microwave should just be 'bang in food, turn dial, slam door shut, wait, eat'.

I am a luddite though. I refuse to buy a dishwasher because all i'll do is turn it on, sit on my arse while it does its' thing, be pissed off that a machine hasn't done a job as well as i could have, and then me just wash up anyway.

Some chores are a good chance for us to escape screen time.

Instant film for medium format and large format cameras. You used to be able to get instant film to put in a film back that gave you large instant images and they looked amazing with sharp focus, rich colours and great image clarity.

Even crockery with French onion soup baked onto it. There's also an odd Zen to washing dishes that way. If you've ever done it, you know.

I once breifly used a sink like that (Did a shift/swap in a kitchen for a day). Very cool, very powerful and yes, very Zen.

The new font looks silly, along with everything on the "brand new" page. The old one looked cool.

Can't say I agree about ludditism over dishwashers. I don't have one, and I don't think you can really clean things as well by hand unless you spend alot of time on it (especially forks/utensils). Inevitably, people forget to do them, and dishes pile up in the sink.

On the other hand, I could live without a microwave for most things. I tend to cook alot on the ranges.

Washing dishes by hand is simple and easy. The only thing a dishwasher does is save you the physical effort.
