We have many proxies touching the Internet with different hosts. They are systematically DDoS attacking these nodes with 100Gbps+ attacks (quite expensive unless you run the botnet). This forces hosts with limited DDoS protection to just drop us. Since some DDoS protection is pay for usage, many will blackhole us (service down but will come back up).
That explains why it cranks up every day at Midnight Belgrade time.

No, it's not possible, unless maybe you're the FBI. The botnet's targets cannot tell anything about the botnet's control from the traffic that they see. The only way to find out where the botnet is getting its commands is to obtain a copy of the malware (which probably requires hacking one of the bots, which is still illegal unless you're the feds) and reverse engineer it (or run it in a sandbox and see what remote hosts it tries to access).
