Technology That Will Vanish in The Next Five Years - Except for the things on this list that still have a use

I'm pretty sure literally every phone still connects to 2G. You'd be fucked in rural areas otherwise.

It makes more sense to turn off 3G than 2G. 3G never really took off properly in ~2001 and when people started wanting it in ~2011 4G was already being rolled out and often has better coverage.

I have a Moto Razr Gen. 3 that I still use when out in the field, and it is currently the only phone I have that still works in supremely rural areas. It may only be 1X, but it's enough to send & read emails. And as far as I know, 1X cell data is never going away.

I just saw that author of article said that google home and alexa would control it and the idea of that turns me off - we all know all info they can get will be send to corporations.
Unless you buy an actual Amazon Echo or whatever then they don't have access to anything. If you grant them access through an API then they only have access to what that API allows.

A common setup is to put all your IoT things on a separate VLAN and then control it all through something like a Raspberry Pi acting as a bridge.

Portable storage going away?
This screams of "I don't use it so it's not needed".
Everybody who records any kind of footage (which is literally EVERYBODY nowadays) likes to actually have that footage and not just put it on Cloud, basically giving all of it to some corporation.
One day, they'll just decide to terminate some servers and suddenly, all your childhood memories are gone.
Also, try getting footage in whatever the latest best format is (which is constantly changing), to and from a cloud smoothly.
If I'm making a 4K video, moving that amount of footage around like that would take forever.
Sure, 4K will become fast to transfer but by then, there will be 25K which will still take forever to upload/download.

Locks going away?
Yeah, if you're planning on living in one of those coffin-like pods and not own anything.
Imagine every little lock being controlled by some complicated hardware and software when the alternative is just a metal thing going into another metal thing.

I don't even buy wired headphones going away.
Way too reliable.

This was written by someone who doesn't really do anything other than consume.
I got flashbacks to that Kulinski "the ground looks cool, I don't know why" tweet. I have a mental image of a person not understanding things like reliability, ease of use and practicality but still thinking that they can give insight and advice on everything.
I seriously doubt this person would be able to get by without being surrounded by technology.
Without looking them up, I'm going to guess either obese or really skinny, unhealthy lifestyle and diet, can't cook, can't take care of the house or themselves, doesn't know anything without looking it up online.
Typical Western middle class Millenial.

I love this era. So much stuff available for nothing at second hand shops. And you'll own it forever too.

Indeed, I've bought something like a dozen CD's this year from thrift stores. Obviously, it's not going to be the latest music but I don't really bother to keep up with current music anyway (and, if I really wanted a brand new CD, there are still a few places to buy them locally not to mention Amazon).

I guess I should reiterate that I absolutely do not agree with what this guy wrote. The only thing on this list I can see actually going away are incandescent lightbulbs, the rest of this shit is just asking to be fucked by Amazon and Google's spy technology. Smart home shit is exceptional unless you are elderly or physically disabled.

Protip: don't use the SmartNews app because these are the kinds of garbage articles it recommends to you throughout the day.

I buy about 6 CD's a week still, and instead of being £12-15, I can get 3 for a quid. Same with books now. Books are cheaper than newspapers now.

1. Wired Headphones - lol no

2. Remote Controls & Switches - lol no

3. Gaming Consoles - I've been hearing about this for years and they're still going strong.

4. Digicams - Don't hipsters love these? Hell, I've seen photo shops that still develop film.

5. Conventional Keys & Locking Systems - I'm gonna leave this here:

6. Incandescent Bulbs - They're cheaper than LEDs, so I don't see them going away.

7. 2G Technology - *laughs in third-world country*

8. Portable Drives - You need somewhere to store your shit. Also, they are safer than cloud storage.

9. DVD/Blu-ray - Again, you need something to store your shit.

10. Cable TV - This one is the most spot on.

5. Conventional Keys & Locking Systems

Yes, I want my front door, back door, garage door and door to my grow room woodshed rely on electronics that are exposed to the elements and can have all sorts of hardware, software and firmware issues.

"Want to keep locking your door? Please pay for the new the software update or your service will expire!"

1. Wired Headphones
Eh. Personally I'm fine with wireless headphones but fuck wireless earbuds. Lets make them even easier to lose! Also boomers and karens who think bluetooth and cell phones microwave your brain and give you AIDS tumors.

2. Remote Controls & Switches
Hey Alexa fax the NSA a pic of my butt hole lmao

3. Gaming Consoles
Fuck games as a service

4. Digicams
True.

5. Conventional Keys & Locking Systems
Oy vey give us more biometric data and put more remotely hackable devices in your house!

people have the option of doing away with conventional keys which I feel is ‘key’ for the future.
Cringe line intended to make boomers seal clap.

6. Incandescent Bulbs
Pretty much agree

7. 2G Technology
Inevitable. There used to be analog 1G towers in remote plains areas of the US into the 2000s.

8. Portable Drives
Oy vey put everything in the cloud and give us access to it all!

9. DVD/Blu-ray
See #8

10. Cable TV
Fuck satellite too. Streaming is cheaper.

When 3G got sunsetted I was actually initially convinced flipphones would go the way of the dodo within 5-10 years. Then Motorola makes that new folding Razr smartphone just to fuck with my expectations.

On a tangent, while I'm not particularly concerned about the health effects of the weak radio signal between the Bluetooth transmitter and wireless earbuds, one thing I use my wired earbuds for is to listen to distant AM radio stations at night because my portable radio has great DX pull and, while I've never tried listening to that radio with wireless earbuds, I strongly suspect the little Bluetooth transmitter attached directly to the radio would add interference and make most AM stations except for local ones unlistenable.

I'd still be using a flip phone if Bell Canada hadn't turned off the network with which it was compatible. Besides my overall wariness about smartphones in general, what I liked about the old Samsung flip phone was that it was compact enough to put in my front left pants pocket leaving loads of room for other things. I wouldn't dare put the Sony XPeria smartphone I have (a gift from a cousin) in my pockets, both because it would be uncomfortable and also because I'd be terrified of smashing the screen any time I bump into something.
