Terry Pratchett's "The Watch" - A diverse and inclusive steampunk BBC series inspired by the Discworld Novels

huh, i guess no one likes this show

What the hell is that poster? It doesn't suit a Discworld adaptation. It looks more like the marketing for one of those quirky edgy live action DC things like Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Titans.

ive been pondering that question too, and all i can think is that they think they need to pander to that """edgy""" consoomer fanbase in order to gain traction of their show. too bad it hasnt worked and everyone is bashing it.

speaking of which, i have a question for those that have watched this trainweck so far, what are some """edgy""" moments from the show?

On one hand, this stupid framing almost makes Vimes drop off the poster for his own show, but on the other, it does make that faggot drop off the poster of the show that he shouldn't be let anywhere near. ... Who made this? "Yeah, let's put all established character in somewhere at the sides... we need the former side character front and center, taking up 90% of the space. Put some garrish pink building behind everyone, so we can be sure that no one even takes notice of any of the people."

Speaking of framing, is this Cheery? They literally cropped out the troon's face hahaha what the fuck now I can't tell if whoever made the poster was trolling or retarded and incompetent

That's not Cheery. I mean, it is that troon character of the same name they shoved into the show, but it's not "Cheery".

Someone asked why we're not seeing this being slated on things like Critical Drinker the same way we are Batwoman, etc.

I think the reason is that this is just genuinely so bad and so offensive to Pratchett fans that most people, me included, want it to just sink into the mud with no viewers, no attention, just a passing "utter shit" and it be forgotten by all.

People have fun taking apart Batwoman or Ghostbusters 2016. It gets them enjoyably angry and mocking. This? This is just a dead puppy by the side of the road.

so recently I watched Netflix' Curse (I was drunk and sad), which is a Witcher/GoT cashgrab "based" on Arthurian mythos except Arthur is a black useless shit (hello, Disney), Merlin is a drunk useless shit (hello, Disney again), Morgana is a black lesbian nun (yes, really), Kylo Ren is here too and the main character is a strong 20-something white woman Chosen One (can you honestly believe this fat bitch who never held a sword before is most badass fighter in this show??? ffs Daisy Whatever at least looked fit).

And so I watched the trailer of The Watch and while, don't get me wrong, it's pretty godawful, I felt like I've seen this already before... Notice how all these "woke" adaptations became really by-the-numbers to the point you can't even tell if this is legit or a parody? It's like they're not even trying anymore. Remember all those YA movies we were getting after the Harry Potter hype and how those quickly died after the Hunger Games?

Or are they specifically making those shit shows for sake of Internet outrage baiting?

edit: tbh Good Omens adaptation was more fun for me to nitpick on because the woke shit there held it back from being truly great. Meanwhile this is just...boring.
Is it me, or does Daisy Ridley really have no other expression other than "jaws out, emotionless damsel"?

Nothing much. Carrot questioned Cheery's gender in the first episode
Angua: This is Cheery. There's nothing she doesn't know about forensics
Carrot: (sceptically) She?
Angua: She.
Cheery: Me!
But that was all that was made of it.
Otherwise, it's been a fairly standard steampunk show tbh
Oh, and in episode two
Detritius was killed by a couple of arrows...

WAT
That's it? That's all it took? That's the most god awful, unbelievably lazy writing I can imagine! They're so fucking creatively bankrupt they couldn't come up with something marginally better?

So this STUNNING and BRAVE representation of genderspecials in this show boils down to an exchange shorter than Ashley Isaacs life expectancy?
They axed that whole amazing aspect of Cheery's background, her identity and replaced it with that dialogue. It's even worse than I thought.

Is Cheery even supposed to be a dwarf?

Uh... wat. Like.. Regular arrows?

Yup. When she was talking about her dwarfish background Carrot asked if she was adopted too. She wasn't, but in the part of the world she's from dwarfs come in all shapes and sizes. Apparently.

Yup. They weren't "troll arrows" or anything, be was shielding Vimes.

What is even the point of dwarves then? What is the point of carrot? I mean, I never really bothered to think about how a 2m tall genderspecial cocksucker doesn't exactly look dwarvish, but why even bother at that point if you go "Oh, dwarves come in all sizes!".
Am I correct in assuming there was a comment or joke about racial stereotypes in there somewhere?

be was shielding Vimes.
At least he died doing something noble. Might as well be the only character popping up in this shitshow that leaves it with some of his dignity intact. He may join Nobby and Colon now, for not being ruined by these assholes and their unimaginative show.

...so the main character isn't even front and centre on his own goddamn poster?

Fuck this. Fuck these hacks. Fuck every single useless untalented showrunner who takes a white character and turns them into a black political mouthpiece. I'm so tired. I hope this oozes back to whatever fucking putrid cesspit mire of a writers room this came out and all those diversity hires are out on their ass.

Current TV sucks. They all suck. It's irredeemable at this point.

Nah, not that I noticed.
As much as I'd like to smear it, I really do think the showrunner wanted his genderspecial friend in the show, so made some tweaks to Cheery so they didn't have to turn him into a dwarf.

Pretty much. I mean as far as I know it's not an overly lively fandom anyway compared to much of what you find online, unsurprising really given it's largely limited to print media and is no longer actively producing new material due to death of the author.

As such there's not going to be much view generating motivation for reviewers to tackle it. Someone may do something after the six episodes are out and do one on the full show but it's so underwhelming there's not a lot to recommend it. As I said earlier there's some stuff that makes me think there's actual effort that went into it but as a whole it is not especially worth talking about.

Regarding people asking about Cheery's gender identity I suspect there may be stuff still to come (I'm an episode behind, can't do this to myself on consecutive weeks). There's insinuations about some childhood stuff already and we know there's still the musical stuff on the horizon if it was not in this episode. My money is on daddy issues and a dramatic "fuck you dad" song.

As for Carrot still being raised a dwarf by actual dwarf height parents don't worry, there was a reason to keep that in.

So we could get this letter from Carrot's dad asking the Ankh Morpork Watch to take him. Which Carrot finds and reads aloud. "He's a good kid but he's grown so big. The other day he hit his head on a joist and nearly brought down the mineshaft. People are scared. I'm scared. We think he'll be safer if he's in the big city watch. So will we."
Guess that whole loving parents thing was impossible for the writer to understand.

To wash my mouth of that have this marvelous remark from Throat's actress' Twitter and the clearly trolling counterpoint

"See what happens when you add disability to a character that wasn't originally written as such?? They instantly become more interesting & layered with epic props you wouldn't get otherwise! Hiring disabled actors will ALWAYS make a project richer. "

"I am amazed then that you are not up in arms about a character who should be a female of very restricted height being played by a 6ft man.... It would of made the character so much 'richer' also not have made Carrots story worthless."

Believe it or not I have a measure of sympathy for some of the actors involved. Most of them are throwing fairly generic stuff up on their Twitter feeds about the show and there's so little interest on there that the only comments are from the same Discworld readers expressing their disapproval. With the exception of Angua who I think is probably turned most bland by the script the performances do not especially bother me. They just feel failed by the writers.
