My friend bought a Tesla, he'd actually be saving money if he didn't pay for FSD (His previous complaint about ICE was fuel prices) but now he's spending his previously month fuel budget, on paying for FSD. He uses it a lot, so he's getting his money's worth, but kind of defeats any reason as to why he had to buy one in the first place.
I can't lie though, I wish I was only paying 10$ on every 500km of driving I did with my car vs the 150$ I currently pay in fuel prices for the same distance (my car is a gas guzzler)

Jeep's Recon EV is asking for $70k for only 220-ish miles of range.

So it's another Stellantis EV flop as usual. It's as if they only exist to making Chinese junk EVs look better, and it's more ironic because Stellantis has a partnership with Chinese automaker Leapmotor.
One thing to keep in mind is that concept to first sale for a car is about 8 years. So this thing was been planned back in 2018. With EVs, the automotive world was primarily waiting to see what governments were going to do. Everyone knew consumers didn't really like them, but if governments were going to mandate them, well, consumers don't have a choice, right?

Left-wing parties in Europe and the USA were, of course, all-in on EVs. But were center-right parties going to do anything? It looked like the answer was "no." At least in the USA, the GOP sent a strong signal when Trump got in office that they had no interest in rolling back Obama-era fuel economy regulations. They were there to cut taxes and confirm judges, and if Trump was going to otherwise try to roll back the progressive agenda, they were going to fight him tooth and nail. In fact, they even stood back to help the Democrats take 2020.

Except then Trump won again in 2024, and the new GOP neutered CAFE. Even the EU has relaxed its 100% EV mandate.

Are they finally going to give them to those people who earned them via the promo code?
It's obviously just gonna be more smoke and mirrors.

It's pretty absurd that the few things Tesla and the Chinese manufacturers actually did innovate in (fast turnaround, at least for the chinese, better tools, fundamentally rebuilding the assembly line, etc) are being completely ignored by struggling companies like Stellantis.

lol
lmao, even

At one point, Tesla reportedly had a scrap rate of around 40% on castings. This is horrendous, about 10x the industry average. As for their remarkable turnaround time, Model S and Model 3 planning began around the same time, 2006. Model S hit volume production in 2013 (they made 3,000 in 2012 and called that a "launch"), 7 years later - but we can give them six if you want to be technical, still nothing amazing, and Model 3 had a long, troubled development until it finally was produced at scale in 2017, 11 years later. Cybertruck's concept history starts in 2012, and it hit the road in 2023, 11 years later, and 4 years later than its promised 2019 release.

It is an absolute myth that Tesla is good at bringing things to market or manufacturing. They are terrible at both.

A Lynk & Co 900 PHEV catches fire, and the dealership claimed that it was caused by a power bank that was dropped onto the floor and kicked under the car. / Archive

And Chinese power banks are just as inferno-prone as their EVs, and the shape of that fire in these pictures looks like the size of a power bank, but it also does come off as Chinese automakers trying to blame anything and everything else when they catch on fire, similar to how Concordverse game devs do the same when their game flops, and refuse to admit that the game sucked.

People seem to forget just how terrible the early Teslas could be. Early Model S adopters got all sorts of fun stuff from their screens turning piss yellow and the insane and unreliable Rube Goldberg contraption of a sunroof (there's a very good reason why they deleted that option altogether) to the infamous wheel whomp issue, and the original Model 3 build quality was legendary as its paint would start peeling off before you clocked 10k on the odometer. They've more or less figured out how to make a usable car at this point, but they paid in blood for that and for a good chunk of the 2010's their actual core business was grifting that carbon credit nonsense and forcing legacy automakers into bankrolling Tesla's endless money burning pits.

It blows me away that EVs cost as much to recharge as it does for me to fill up my motorcycle. Like this 2 tonne car can match the running costs of my 240kg Suzuki GSX650F.

Still not buying one though, they're gonna pull some fucking Deus Ex trick in the future and turn off EVs whenever the police recognise a potential protest, riot or whenever the gubberment doesn't want organising to occur. I remember reading about that journalist that died after the CIA hacked his Mercedes and drove it into a tree. It just shames me because the technology used to make EVs is objectively incredible and super necessary for all sorts of future developments but fuck me every Western nation will use it to just corral to police Whiteys some more.

If they had offered an electric vehicle that was just an electric drivetrain without all the other bullshit associated with modern vehicles, then I might be interested. However, modern vehicles annoy the piss out of me.

I remember people shitting all over the Prius when it first came out but I always thought it was a cool car. If they had kept it like that but added in all the other cool stuff (insane torque, ongoing maintenance and whatnot) then that would be insanely attractive to a large part of the market.

The "carcinisation" of automobiles into blocky SUVs with gigantic display panels, irregardless of internal components, has to be one of the saddest things ever. That and car colour selections. I guess that's what happens when you have a more productive economy with a tightening market base, you have to streamline only for what is the most common selling thing. In Australia, Honda only sells 8 cars with 4 of them being variants, so really only 4 distinct models. Thank God motorcycles haven't gone down this path other than electronic TFT dashboards. The day they start installing hybrids and phasing out pure ICE motors is going to be a sad day indeed.
