Some cars turn it on automatically each time you start the vehicle.
Toyota allows you to turn it off permanently. Some of the older cars I think it only turned on during cruise control. The thing I can't disable permanently is the auto engine shutoff when I'm stopped and have the break pedal pressed all the way. Have to press the button everytime.

They don't let you disengage it by slightly lifting off the brake? Damn

What's wrong with auto engine shutoff?

Yes but it's a very fine line between pressing it enough to be stopped and pressing enough to shutoff.

Wear and tear on the starter for one. Also shuts off climate control. In fact in some cases it won't auto shutoff because of climate control, but I've only seen it do that when the heat was on.
And what's the point anyway? To save a miniscule amount of fuel for the 30 seconds I'm stopped? At the expense of my starter? No thanks.

oh fuck you can still get Suzuki Swifts? they stopped making them here because efficiency regulations made everyone buy big and heavy cars
They're one of the most popular new cars because of their price, but they're even uglier with each Gen.
You can still buy them with manual gearboxes. Either 1.2l hybrids or 1.4l turbos.

Will be a sad day when they disappear.

Electric cars are actually far more capable of being sporty and awesome than ICE, electric motors pack a tonne of punch into a very small volume,
Weight is the enemy of everything good about cars, and what are electric cars?
It's annoying if you're like me and are ready to go when the light hits green. There's a slight delay for it to start the engine back up.

Then again I can just release the brake a hair and it starts the engine while stopped, so it's not a big deal and can still save gas in heavy traffic.
Get a Mazda. My dad's Mazdas with stop start have always started as you're throwing the gearstick into first and will be idling before you take your hand away.

What happens if Tesla goes bankrupt in 10 years, and all the cars are reliable on their software/unique components?
If Tesla goes bankrupt but still has Elon Musk in control, he might open source the software.

Otherwise there needs to be a law where the control of the software falls into a trust dedicated to maintaining it when companies fail or drop the product

What's wrong with auto engine shutoff?

The initial batch of german cars that introduced this system left a bad taste in the collective mouths of drivers but those issues have since then been addressed. You aren't likely to be wearing down any engine or battery components from using auto shutoff, however the fuel economy benefits are laughable, if not minimal. For me the only reason to use them would be if I lived on some off-LA california suburb and my daily commute entailed waiting on a highway gridlock for several hours.
These systems also allowed fraudulent criminal company volkswagen to add a "we're saving children's lungs!!!!1" checkbox on their emissions pamphlets.

An Australian Hyundai IONIQ5 owner got a self-aware license plate for his car:

They're still trying to downplay EV fires, by saying that they're safer because of having "lesser odds" to catch fire than ICE cars, without taking into account the sheer amount of effort needed to extinguish them, and how destructive EV fires can get, i.e. the Tesla Semitruck fire, the EQE that burned in a South Korean parking lot, and whenever a Chinese EV bursts into flames.

but that Whistlin' Diesel guy is a douchebag
You could have just stopped there and no one would argue.
There are PHEVs that use an eCVT to do what you describe, most don't because the drive feel is kinda shit.
I'd expect any car with one to drive like a tractor. Planetary gearbox with an externally driven ring gear. Only difference is an electric motor instead of a variable displacement hydraulic motor. I'm surprised Deere hasn't released a EVT™ prototype yet. Just separating the transmission from the hydraulic system would be a huge improvement.
Damn nanny cars. Ours has it, but yeah it stays off.
My neighbor's 3500 has lane assist and he doesn't know how to turn it off. The truck will start bzzt-bzzt-ing your ass driving through a hay field. Drives me nuts.
