China can’t make a good internal combustion engine. They can make electric motors and they control the entire supply chain of the batteries. They promote EVs because they see them as an opportunity to take the lead in the automotive industry that they missed the boat on. They’re promoting them as a “Made in China” thing rather than an environmental thing.

China is also taking over the low end EV market in Europe by undercutting the European brands (e.g. MG which isn’t British anymore). They also have some high end brands like Volvo and Lotus. It’s gonna be hilarious if the Germans virtue signal their way out of an entire industry.
Don't forget that a car that is loaded with electrical shit would be a perfect vehicle for tracking and limiting freedom of movement. Especially once they ban selling gas cars in the second hand market.

Tesla revealed the refreshed version of the Model 3, which is barely that at best. The new Model 3 will go on sale first in Europe, and then the US:

And as expected, the turn signal and transmission stalks were removed, just like in the Model S and X, and changed to capacitive touch control on the steering wheel for the former, and is a touchscreen control for the latter:

Other changes include improved sound deadening, standard heated and ventilated seats, and reports of improved driving range.

These changes still scream "mass cost-cutting".

Audi has revealed their new upcoming EV model, the Q6 e-tron, which has an overkill amount of screens in it:

And it still has the same capacitive touch controls that only serve to annoy users and inevitably stop working.

This reminds me of something.

I will never understand this trend of removing intuitive shit that just works and trying to reinvent it with something that didn't need to be reinvented in the first place. There's a gut instinct that I get when I look at a Tesla where I can see it's planned obsolescence right out of the factory.

Like sometimes you'll see a Dodge Monaco or something driving around, but I doubt you can have a Tesla driving around once the servers shut down and the support stops.

That (Tesla) the end result of a car that was designed by a tech company, and not a legacy automaker. Tesla doesn't even use automotive grade parts in some things, which resulted in things such as the touchscreen melting on older Teslas, and the eMMC chip reaching the maximum write cycles, which made the touchscreen non-functionable, and Tesla only recalled the eMMC chips because the NHTSA told them to do so.

And that shit quickly spread to legacy automakers too.

Lotus has also announced a new EV sedan, the Emeya. The fact that the name is a few letters away from confusing it as the Lotus Enema, says a lot. And the $100k starting price is a lot to ask for as well.

Do modern cars even have any mechanical parts anymore? When I'm borrowing my dad's SUV I feel as if I'm driving a car in a video game rather than pressing or moving shit has any real effect besides an input to a computer
They are still very much mechanical. It's just that there are a lot of power assist features that numb the driving experience down. Almost no car these days uses a good old hydraulically boosted power steering rack anymore, even sports cars. Steering racks are now boosted by an electric motor. It's great for the engine since that eliminates a power steering pump being driven off the accessory belts. Automatic transmissions and CVT are also standard so most cars feel like you're throttle pedal is a rubber band. Higher end trans like the ZF8hp and Porsche PDK have locking features that make it feel more connected. Suspension rubber components have also come a long way so that adds to the smoothness.

Can’t wait to trade in my 2022 M3LR in on one.

The kids will appreciate the rear entertainment screen. But then the model S is now a lot cheaper so maybe I should just buy a model S plaid..

A family member has the same model of car as I do, but roughly a decade newer. Driving their car is like playing a simulated racing wheel/pedal version of mine. I dont "feel" the car the same way I do on the older ones and this is coming from someone who was raised as an only automatic transmission baby.

The only good new features on cars are the side and rear camera and aux cord ports(provided the user experience doesn't go to shit thanks to the center console interface).

It's actually really easy to upgrade the audio system on older cars. I wouldn't count lack of aux or bluetooth on older cars as a bad thing since most have a standard single or double din receptacle. The mirror side camera and blind spot assist are definitely a nice thing.
