Edison Motors is in the process of making a retrofit kit to convert old pickup trucks to their diesel-electric platform.

This I find pretty exciting as it will be much more environmentally friendly to recycle an old truck over manufacturing a new disposable electric. Plus it uses modular components that are easy to service and replace and you can use mass produced parts for the original truck chassis. They're currently in the process of finding shops who will partner to handle the refurbishing of trucks. They think that the cost of the kit will be "33%-50% of the cost of a new truck" whish is disappointing vague as I don't know what they are considering the cost of a new truck, but if one of their partners focuses on finding and refurbishing trucks with good frames but dead engines, that could be a decent supply of trucks at a reasonable price.

If this does well then it's reasonable to assume they will eventually offer kits to convert medium duty SUVs and even cars.
Why yes, I would like a 1960s Chevy pickup wih a hybrid electric powertrain and 500HP.

Honestly I think a lot of people would. If anyone is close with a shop that does a lot of restorations or work on vehicles they might be interested in this.

I'm hoping the number work out enough that it's very profitable to find old trucks with dead drivetrains and retrofit them to be electric.

Take this 1964 International Harvester or this 1939 Dodge you can get for less than a grand US. If it was restored and with an electric drivetrain it would be an awesome truck.

I created a dedicated thread for the discussion of Edison Motors

This push for electric vehicles could mean far more fires from the batteries. And of course the electricity used charging those things is going to burn more fossil fuels from fossil fuel power planets. But maybe that plan is to get people to stop driving?

The only plan is for the people pushing it to rake in money. That's it.

A Hyundai IONIQ5 owner in Canada was given a quote of $60K CAD to replace a battery, after damage to it voided the warranty. So the whole "EVs are low-cost in the long run" still will prove to be false, for the near future.

And to conveniently cause mass destruction and death, to "reduce carbon footprint" too.

Reuters also posted a report that reveals what was expected with Tesla, in that they blamed drivers for part defects, namely with suspension, which lead to the "Whompy Wheels" term being a thing.

Tech CEO calls for Tesla boycott over self-driving capabilities in Super Bowl ad campaign (Lite) (archive)
O’Dowd is the president and CEO of the Santa Barbara, California-based software company Green Hills Software. In 2022, he launched a failed bid for the US Senate, running solely on the issue of Tesla’s automated driving software.
This year’s campaign cost $552,000, a spokesperson for The Dawn Project told CNN, slightly lower than the group’s $598,000 ad buy last Super Bowl. The commercials will also be playing in fewer and smaller media markets.
You don't hate Tesla as much as this guy.

Stellantis apparently wants to revive the Lancia brand name, (which currently only exists to sell re-badged Fiat 500-based cars in Italy) by re-badging a Peugeot/Opel EV hatchback, and calling it the new Ypsilon:

To think that a brand that was once known for their amazing Rally cars (even if they sometimes catch on fire like Hyundai/Kia ICE engines and Chevrolet Bolt batteries), became as irrelevant as Mitsubishi is in the US, and now it's corpse is being used to sell re-badged EVs, with nothing that screams the rally finesse that the brand had.

That's a disgrace to the Delta. What say you @Delta Integrale ?

The hubcaps on the cybertruck tires are wearing away the sidewalls of the actual tire. Random blowouts when? Recall soon I think.

Edit: Here's some guy that runs a paint protection film shop reading the owners manual about rust lol.

But it did get worse...

Tesla apparently covers the rust if it happens from the inside to out, so if salt gets behind a panel and rusts it. Goooooood luck trying to get them to warranty that. If it rusts outside in oh well haha, you're on your own. If you have hope to claim this warranty a mandatory 5-6k paint protection film is needed (ironic).

Digging further into the cybertruck specific rust warranty it sounds like you void your 12 year rust warranty if you get it "rust proofed" i.e. oil sprayed.

Amongst the other reasons that the cybertruck is shit, add this one to the list of it being an awful 'truck' for offroading. Not sure about other vehicles in it's class like the hummer EV, but the vehicle needs to be put into a 10 minute setup 'wade mode' to go through knee deep water, even though it's an EV and there's no ICE that needs access to oxygen to function and thus would lead to water egress. Apparently the battery is open enough, probably due to cooling needs, that it needs to be vacuum sealed. Techrax here's a dumbass who destroys tech products for views, but the relevant bit here starts at :50 and should be timestamped above. He does push it through the water too hard initially and then goes through at a more reasonable pace through deeper and deeper water as the video goes on, and somewhere in this process water actually began egressing into the top control panels for the back bed door, leading to him only being able to open and close it with an app. (7:52)

I've seen a substantial uptick of EV hate and EV skepticism outside the rightwingosphere coinciding with the war on Elon Musk. Before, outside of conservative sites EVs were perfect in everyway, inevitable, and had no downside whatsoever at least nothing that couldn't quickly be worked out. Now suddenly theres tons of articles and thinkpieces and youtube vids picking apart the numerous issues with them on mainstream center and even left of center sites with even formerly enthusiastic progs starting to have their doubts. A lot of this is specific to Tesla but a lot of it is just on EVs in general, although presumably still intended to target Tesla.

Some EV news:

Jaguar will be ending production on all of their ICE cars this year, in preparation to become EV-only next year. Given that Jaguar is just as irrelevant as Mitsubishi is, this could be the killing blow for them, even though they have been under Pajeet ownership (Tata) for a while.

Fisker once again is in financial trouble, and are laying off 15% of their work force. Given the amount of times Fisker has crashed and burned in regards to making automobiles, he must have some fucking huge ego to keep trying again.

Karma Motors, which was split from Fisker a LONG time ago, revealed their upcoming EV, the Gyesera. The 5300 lb curb weight, and only getting 250 miles of range on a 120 kW battery, is VinFast VF8 levels of an obese EV.

Ironically the Cybertruck is one of the better looking EVs to me. The thing just looks like an LOD in an old video game while all other EVs either look like a design scrapped from a bargain bin 2000s Sci-Fi film or an already existing car with it's nose and mouth erased off. That being said I still wouldn't buy any of these because I like my car not needing a software update every week and only catching fire once if something catastrophic happens.
