Tesla Cybertrucks have been recalled again, this time for drive inverters that can fail.

GM will be laying off another 1000 employes, bringing the total number of layoffs to 3700 in 2024, to try to offset the $2-4 billion that were lost trying to make EVs a thing.

And Chinese EVs (and their cars in general) have the same usual Tesla minimalist interior with a LARGE infotainment screen, a small instrument panel display for the driver, and minimal physical controls. The sheer number of cars that have that exact design scheme looks completely dystopian:

You had one back in the 90's when General Motors experimented around with the idea with their EV1, lease only though. Even back then with the comparatively lax fuel economy standards and lack of safety regulations for the time, there was barely a market for it.

All of this, long before the Tesla Roadster was conceptualized, nor the Model 3 made somewhat cheap EVs easily accessible.

Sadly, you're unlikely to find an EV that fits that criteria. The EV that comes closest to that would be the Nissan Leaf, but the battery tech is very old, range is lacking (even moreso for the older Gen 1 Leafs because they suffer significant range loss due to the lack of a battery cooling/heating system), and the Leaf is expected to be killed off soon. Even if a car company were to make an EV with the said 80's/90's interior, the cost of the battery is still significant.

The only realistic way you'll see an EV with physical controls is if you convert regular car, which I'm sure you can imagine would be something of a compromise.

Chinese slop isn't built to be particularly cheap in concept, but to cheap out on material, QA, and such.

They'll either go as close as possible to cloning other cars (most of Chery's fleet is Toyota copy/pasta), or, if they're ever original, they'll copy whatever they think is luxury piecemeal.
Go back to @Thiletonomics ' post and look at center consoles. What do they look like? Mercedes, BMW, and a bit of Tesla.
Notice that they also all have digital instrument clusters.

These things are not that cheap. Seriously, a Tesla-style center console is not significantly cheaper than a much smaller screen and physical controls, the only real gain Tesla gets from it is assembly complexity, as they can just slot in the center console without ensuring trim pieces flow into it, almost none of the chinese manufacturers do that.

Instead, they'll cheap out on the hardware, OS (half of the chinese cars have literal android tablets as infotainment), material quality, batteries, motors, build quality, QA, etc.
Even "higher quality"/"western focused" chinese manufacturers will fuck it up, look at the Xiaomi SU7.

All of this because the chinese government pays a lot of subsidies per EV, and EV manufacturing costs are significantly lower than ICE, most of it being material cost, this attracts a lot of grifters that just pump out shit cars at exhorbitant margins.

The second these subsidies disappear? Half of these manufacturers will too.

Apperantly the doors in the tesla are incredibly hard to open manually, especially if there was an accident. The front windshield is also unreasonably hard. Meaning if you are in an accident and the car catches on fire it becomes a death trap.

I got bad news for the kids in the back seat though.


After reviewing all the manuals you definitely need training if you are expected to open rear doors without power. They are all hidden behind an access cover in a similar manner.

If the rear ones were more obvious then children may accidentally pull it while in traffic, and likely curious adults. Still, reading the safety and emergency sections of the user manual is recommended for anyone.

Like all corpo speech it's "technically" correct, but heavily downplays why you'd want to open the doors manually, especially as "no power" can easily happen from an accident.

Aside from which, even if you accept the hidden manual handle is A Good Thing, there's still the fact that there's no physical handle on the outside, meaning nobody can open the door that way.

I know of a couple engineers that work for the Big 3 and during interviews with Tesla repeatedly said to the interviewers you can't run a car company like that. Tesla is a technology company that builds cars. They will continue to operate as such until the NHSA comes down on them.

If the low tech solution works just as well, or better, than the high tech solution, go with the caveman option.

I hate this so much. If there's one reason to really hate Tesla, it's for making this shit the newest fashion trend. The manager and tech bro caste loved it, and since they're the ones buying new cars and driving company cars, every fucking manufacturer followed suit. It's digusting, I hate it, and I doubt I'll ever buy a new car because of this shit.

The first lean Tesla was kinda cool. A real rich kid car. Now? I see more of those big clunky motherfucker ones here in Europe where all cars are relatively small. I've seen 1 RAM here and it stood out like a sore fucking thumb. And so do the model.. E? They're not even roomy; just big for the sake of it.

I don't know whether to hate Tesla, or to just use them as a great example of why EVs are just way too fucking expensive, and honestly still not a viable replacement for the lower end market.

Most of these manufacturers copy/pasting Tesla's "one true screen" policy forget why Musk pushed for it to go that way.
As much as EVs are literally suicide booths on wheels, the elongated muskrat is autistic, and has an autistic fixation on the physical side of efficiency.
Most of the wierd, unusual, or straight up retarded changes in a Tesla are done to make their assembly faster, easier, and more automatable.

Why did the Ultrasonics and Radar disappear? Because installing them requires boring additional holes after injection molding, manually installing the sensors, and if they fail, they're a pain to remove. No sensors, nothing to drill.
Why only a single screen and no buttons? Because then you only need to screw in the display assembly to the dash, connect 3 things, and place the plastic covers.
No more stalks to turn, change gears, or actuate the headlights? One less part to service, and now, assembling the cabin-side of the steering column is slapping on two pieces of plastic and screwing on the wheel.
Removing screws, gluing panels, stripping down the interior? All for assembly speed, even if it would end up costing more as a result, or would require additional software burden.

I can find sources saying that it takes on average 10 hours to shit out a Model Y, whereas a VW ID3 takes 30 or more.
The model Y is the 4th most popular car in the US, and the most popular car in europe. The model Y and 3 are the most popular EVs in the US and Europe.
And yet Elon's efficiency autism is the only reason why they're not sinking.
The one true screen is just a symptom of how far you have to go to be profitable.

Every other EV manufacturer exists only because of subsidies.
They want to be competitive with Tesla's pricing while not giving away their brand's identity, or implementing austerity measures in their manufacturing plants.
EVs are going to bankrupt the car industry because they're simply not profitable unless you're genuinely autistic about being able to shit out a lot of them with great margins.

Nonetheless, mandates banning the sale of petrol cars in 2035, 2030, or, hell, in some places they planned it in 2025, will do nothing but murder the car industry and leave only Tesla and Gook trash alive.
