Depending on who you talk to, the level of threat ranges from literally nothing because you have to actually want whatever they're saying in the first place, to a world where internet hypnotists can trick you into being their e-minion by applying such evils as "psychology" over text to attack your brain without you even knowing it.

This is very common in the mermaid fiction (both literature and art) community, especially since a lot of stories focus on the main character (usually a girl, bonus points if self-insert) discovering they've been a mermaid all along/start to turn into one.

Some even just end at the point where the person has transformed into a mermaid, right before they begin their new "life". One author that I know on dA who writes various TF work (very high quality, though) is Nate-Walis (https://nate-walis.deviantart.com/). Their works range from mermaids to plants to inanimate objects.
Edit: I'll see if I can find it, think the user's name is Agent505 on dA, but they also write stuff about people who are car shapeshifters. I'm not sure if this counts, since while Nate-Walis isn't what I would call explicitly porn it's very sensual and erotic (though they don't shy away from anything, it's admittedly hard to describe). Agent505's work is I'm pretty sure not in their mind fetish fuel but I wouldn't be surprised if they had followers who were into that.
Edit the 2nd: There's also occasionally the TG aspect that's sometimes seen with mermaids. Maybe because lesbians? Or because mermen aren't seen as sexy? Who knows. But it's much much less popular, and I personally think the biggest reason is that most of the people interested in mermaid TF are probably women, because self-inserts.
