The ~Aesthetic~ thread - General thread for aesthetic trends including but not limited to fashion, art, and home design.

This thread needs pics, y'all. We can't just describe shit and not post pics.
Found out recently that there is a name for the style of things I dig. It's called "Cassette Futurism." Effectively, the 70's to 90's idea of what the future would be. Where the tech and aesthetic evolved from the (current) 80's. So think, CRT tvs just get bigger and fancier, cassettes are still reliably used, big beige boxes for supercomputers. If you want an idea, anything from the OG Blade Runner or Alien or the like. Or Star Wars. Anime used it a lot, stuff like Cowboy Bebop predicting that you'd be flying spaceships using big boopy button panels and Vector graphics.

I'm a sucker for dark/goth, weirdcore and dreamcore aesthetics.

That’s the one! WHY WHY WHY is everyone stripping wood right back then bleaching it and paint washing it. It looks hideous.
The amber colour the solvent based varnishes go is nice.
I work with furniture refurbishing and one thing I’ve learned is the customer is always wrong and will never know good colors of feng shui if it kicked them in the teeth. I had a lady come in one time and ask for her chairs (pretty nice ones but the furniture was worn and stripped) and insisted the to be painted with the baby blue and pink. We reluctantly did and the first comment she had was “oh this was a bad idea”

I love the "touch of Y2K" in those pictures too! Dreamcore and weirdcore also go well with internetcore.

The music video to Freestyler by Bomfunk MC is the most 90s thing in existence and I love that for it. The baggy clothes? The white people dreadlocks? The monochrome/orange colour grading reminiscent of the movie poster for Trainspotting? The optimistic retrofuturism of a pre-iPod mp3 nugget giving you time travel superpowers? A guy breakdancing while holding a playstation controller for no discernible reason? Iconic.

There's a netlabel, Neoncity Records, which recently restocked their line of cassette players. They often release albums on cassettes and vinyl. https://www.neoncityrecords.com/products/poolside-cassette-player

No powerleveling, but I am a big faggot and used buy cassette and vinyl frequently from a lot of the bandcamp vapor-adjacent labels. They're always really high quality and let me show off to people that "No, vinyl and cassette did not always sound shitty. You just remember having shitty consumer grade equipment when you were young."

Vinyl sounds amazing. Better than digital IMO. (From a family of stereo obsessives.)

Even an old dusty vinyl can sound nice with the soothing pops and hisses
I adore the sound of LP’s both fresh-out-of-the-package and worn. I would trade my whole CD collection for vinyl’s if I could. Plus they come in so many pretty colors now. <3

Anyone who has worked in an art and design adjacent field knew about people with no inner monologue/no mind's eye long before NPCs became a meme.

I love the cover art for a lot of albums published on Lobster Theremin around 2015. They often match the ongoing trend at the time of lo-fi, grainy, somewhat melancholic and often mysterious (often acid tinged) house (and also techno, ambient, electro and ambient techno to a lesser degree). There is something lonely in some of them, something hidden, sometimes it feels like a sense of loss or something that's forgotten, and I find there's something quite beautiful in that, especially when you look at the images while listening to the music they're supposed to accompany.

Some examples:

Unfortunately some examples have been lost to time. Lobster Theremin faced legal issues a couple of years back, and it seems like some of the old covers can no longer be found, or have been modified. That's the case for this album by S Olbricht, but the youtube video still has the image as a background.

Imre Kiss - Spellbound (from Raw Energy EP) (I love this one very much, it makes me think of mugler-esque femme fatales doing witchy stuff, maybe spying and obtaining classified documents from redacted)

someone put this footage as a background to Hogtown (also from Hogtown), and I think it makes for a perfect music video:
