THE BIRD THREAD - Post birds, discuss birds or even sniff birds.

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

The bald eagle pair in N. Cali, Big Bear Lake, laid 3 eggs this year and two have started to hatch. I’d post a link to the nest cam but I keep getting a ‘unable to make sense of this link’ error message (it’s on Youtube, FOBBV aka Friends of Big Bear Valley nest cam.) Beautiful scenery and a really awesome pair of Bald Eagles.

Anyway, here is a close-up pic of the hatchening

2/3 chicks have hatched and mom is feeding them.

tiny bits of fish they catch on the lake the nest is on. She’s so careful and gentle with that big deadly beak.

They’re only a day old but already fighting, lol

Enjoying listening to increased activity from the red-shouldered hawks that live and nest every year in the woods behind my house - were hitting nesting season! But today I also heard what may be a red-tailed hawk, so I’m keeping an eye/ear on what’s going on. These two can coexist, but they can also be competitive for nesting territory. I’ve had red-shouldered out there for years and years and I love having them so close and seeing the babies learn to fly.

Updated before posting - red-tailed hawk confirmed.

And in under 30 minutes today, I heard 10 different species, just sitting in my backyard. It’s time to pull out the binocs and go tramping through some woods, I think.

I’m next-day double-posting bc I went outside this morning and in 60 seconds had 7 different bird calls identified, including one I hadn’t recorded before. And today no distant construction noise interfering. I am so calmed and grateful to be able to enjoy so much lovely nature right outside my door, and to have a version of suburbia with protected land that allows birds and other creatures to flourish.

Highly recommend the Merlin BirdID app from Cornell. I’ve been using it for a few years. I also downloaded the Audubon app yesterday but haven’t tried it out.

Recently, I've had a new visitor to my yard:

The Eastern Phoebe.

Hopefully he sticks around and doesn't let the northern mockingbirds chase him off. (I'm almost dreading the return of the Blue Jays - those territorial pipsqueaks tend to void my yard of all birds save the robins and the doves until they decide to fuck off elsewhere)

Double post because fuck it.

Fat-fuck robins are back in the yard!

Picture taken with a lukewarm potato disguised as a phone through a screened porch, because this asshole's keeping me from going outside to feed the fish in the pond (because I'm weak for birbs and don't want to chase them off)
