Double post because fuck it.

Fat-fuck robins are back in the yard!

Picture taken with a lukewarm potato disguised as a phone through a screened porch, because this asshole's keeping me from going outside to feed the fish in the pond (because I'm weak for birbs and don't want to chase them off)

I love me a big fat Robin.

I'm so fucking mad at myself. A budgie landed on my windowsill and was trying to get to my budgies, meanwhile my budgies were outside their cage so I couldn't just open the window. So instead I scurried around the house like a jackass for a solid 5 minutes trying to find something to catch the bird with while it was chirping outside. By the time I finally remembered I had mosquito netting stored in the pantry and got it, the budgie was no longer there.

It's the third time this happens, the previous two were another budgie that smacked against my window and a finch I found on the sidewalk. I tried to catch the birds with my bare hands both times and failed miserably, so this time I tried to think things through and ended up with too much thinking and too little acting.

I rarely get so worked up over something to the point where I'll powerlevel about it on the internet but fuck, failing to catch a bird for the third time really made me livid. I'm keeping the mosquito netting easy to reach from now on, this can't happen a 4th time.

Not the best photo that I've ever taken, but this chonky red boi was the first cardinal I've seen so far this year.

Gotta love these derpy little dinosaurs.

Are these escaped pet birds or are they wild? If they are escaped pets they are probably attracted by the sound of your pet budgies. You could play some budgie noises on a speaker or something to try and attract it again, then catch it with the net.

They're escaped pets, probably from an old neighbor who hoards them in a shitty rusty cage, she always loses 2 or 3 budgies every year.

I'll try playing budgie noises, but aside from that time where I found a budgie that was too injured to fly (unfortunately she passed away not long after), they don't seem to remain in the area. When the other two birds escaped I've never seen or even heard them again.

If that's true, good on them for escaping, at least they have a better chance at freedom and a happy life. I have always hated seeing budgies as common caged birds who are untamed and never taken out of the cage to exercise. They can fly great distances and are extremely social animals, it's not fair to them.

That's true, it's horrible how budgies and small animals in general are seen more as decorations than as living beings, but I feel guilty when I fail to catch them because my birds can free roam around my room whenever I'm home and pet budgies don't tend to survive long in the wild. I can't help but think that they were so close to living a better life with my birds but couldn't because I fucked it up.

It's not your fault that their previous owner was so shit that they escaped multiple times. Birds are notoriously hard to catch, especially small ones. If I were you I'd maybe leave out an open bird cage with some fresh water and food inside, a single wooden perch inside, maybe even play some budgie noises if you wanna go all-out. They will likely look for a place they are familiar with, and a bird cage will feel more familiar to them than the outside world, especially with food and water. They are likely to fly there if they are exhausted and desperate.

If you do catch one in the future though, be sure to quarantine it first and take it to the vet for a health check so it doesn't give your budgies any potential diseases or anything. Who knows what they might have if they are staying in poor-quality cages.

Thank you. I've set up a cage outside. I can't place my speaker outside without it overheating, but I'll try to place a mirror behind the cage to make them think there's another bird inside. I think I'm just gonna leave it there permanently because if two budgies have appeared outside my window then a third one can certainly appear as well.

Just to cheer things up, I'll share a photo of one of my budgies. This is my little guy when he was a baby, he's still young but he's almost reaching adulthood, my older girl has a more unique look so I can't post her.

My bird got out, in the entire 6 years I've had her she's never tried this sort of thing before, and it's been over a week so I kind of lost hope. I have her cage on my porch still with food and her toys in case she does end up back. I've always been extremely careful about this sort of thing even when she's never attempted it because I never wanted to risk it and somehow it still happened. I really miss her.

I live in a very rural area that has a lot of eagles/hawks/falcons and there's a few regulars around my place I recognise so I can only hope she somehow has avoided them but I doubt it after this long.

I really miss the sound of a bird in the house but it feels to soon to get another budgie just so I can hear one every morning and take care of it....

Have you tried playing budgie sounds near her cage? There was another poster here that was attracting "foreign" budgies with theirs.

Yeah, spent the entire week doing that combined with walking for a few hours a day doing it and looking around. Some neighbours of mine even did it too the first few nights. Nothing.

Damn, that sucks. Hope she manages to find her way back. Do you know how she escaped?
