After observing the last few pages, I noticed a lot of people having a debate on whether any of the trolling old or recent, was justified.
Here's my take.
In the strictest moral and ethical sense, no, it was never justified at any time, but that's a given.
That said, there are two phases of trolling at play here.
Old Phase: The early days of trolling were basically just poking an easily offended, easily mockable weirdo who made a strange webcomic and who had a goofy view of reality. While it occasionally dipped into the disturbed and depraved territory (i.e. - The Bluespike incident), the trolls of that time, as
@Marvin can attest, drew the lines fairly explicitly between messing with a weirdo's emotions while still giving him room and free will to ignore them if he so chose, but Chris' unwillingness to do that led to the old phase of trolling we now know.
Back then, Chris was fairly well off by contemporary standards given his standards now, had both parents, and generally lived fairly high on the hog for someone of his station, so given Chris could have spared himself the trouble of lashing out at the internet for being mean and just chose not to, the trolls of old figured so long as they didn't do any that robbed Chris of free will, it was a consensual performance art piece Chris contributed to, they got some laughs, end of story.
The old phase generally ended by the time Chris' father died. By this point, Chris' life had gotten somewhat more somber and darker, and most of the trolls of old decided they had their fun, but Chris deserved to generally be let alone, winding up a grieving man who they had worked into a frenzy prior was basically a shit thing to do.
New Phase: After an interregnum where Chris' presence was quite minimal, the new phase of trolling began. Initially, it was tired rehashes of old trolling stunts, and by this time the older and relatively wiser Chris had developed an immunity to a limited degree, and by this point, he was a far different person than the one the internet became aware of years prior.
Unfortunately, by this point, Chris had built up an internet reputation, and we began to see a horde of asshole copycats try to recapture the "lulz" of the old guard of trolls, many of which had hung their hats up and decided they had their fun, just sit back and watch.
The new phase of troll, unfortunately, misunderstood not only the moral limits the trolls of old imposed to allow Chris to walk away at any time, they also lacked any of the commonly understood ethos the older trolls had fallen back on: Chris is a mentally unstable man who is quite gullible, so have laughs at his expense but don't force him to do anything he wouldn't have a choice to do".
This was a sane limit established to keep matters where they would not be legally actionable, the old guard of trolls had the brains to know they didn't want to screw themselves over doing something illegal.
As we have seen, the new phase of troll had become the kind of morally and ethically bereft sack of shit who had no problem trying to psychologically manipulate Chris for their own gain and sick amusement, even if they had to stoop to crime to get the laughs the trolls of old had the good sense to mostly realize was not worth it, either materially or morally.
As has been most recently discussed, it has gone far beyond poking a weird person on the internet for laughs while giving them the chance to quit reacting if they so chose. What has happened recently is robbing said weird guy of any free will by tricking him into false confessions and then using that as a springboard to have him give money, other items, and perform sick and depraved acts in exchange for not being ruined on a legal and moral level.
Basically, the new phase of troll, at best, was a bad rehash of the old phase, and at worst are sociopaths engaging in criminal behavior.
