What's important here is INTENT, not how ridiculous his beliefs were and are. Most states, if not all, have specific criminal statutes protecting disabled adults and the elderly from being exploited in cases like this.

it's openly discussed that we know chris is autistic. he is easily manipulated, is immature and has some weird obsessions. chris is honestly still a large 10 year old. once barb dies, this stuff could truly go down hill and maybe even cause chris physical harm. these aren't trolls anymore. these are literal psychos getting gratification out of toying with a (obviously) mentally ill developmentally disabled adult.

with his past, the obvious developmental delay/issues + mental health problems, he SHOULD AT LEAST qualify for adult services through the DD board in his area or the virginia dd board. he will probably also be taken in as a ward of the state and have a legal guardian (thats not barb, she would not meet the requirements)
it is so clear as day that he is not mentally capable of living alone or without services such as a social worker. (a group home for adults with autism are often separated by level of "function", chris would be with other adults who are on his level and would have services accessible to him when needed.) if this would go to court (like it should) chris would be automatically considered unable to care for himself or live at home (without services).
if this goes to court: they likely will put him in a psych ward for a bit to get things in place though which would be... wonderful... he would be a "ward of the state" more likely. hopefully the group home will keep him OFF the internet and get this dude some god damn help and a hobby. personally, i think chris would do well in some form of group home/group therapy based for autistic adults, being at home with barb and the internet has not helped him. he would get out more and have a chance at normalish life stuff.

YES. I cant believe I'm saying this unironically about a Lolcow, and with so much genuine concern and...love even, but Chris needs a psych ward and a home. He needs meds. It's a local mental health center. They have like therapy and shit. I think they're rolling out an in-patient treatment center, but it's not long term. It's like for drug addicts or maybe people undergoing mental breakdowns in the moment. If Chris shows up, act cogent, jabbers at the therapist for a bit, he'll walk right out.
I think it would be a good move to take Rocky's advice on that. Even if it doesn't lead to anything in the short term, it gets down on paper what has happened to justify a higher level of help after Barb and the house are gone. Chris has never gotten sufficient treatment for his condition. He's been mainstreamed against all professional advice. His parents discouraged any kind of therapy or life skills training. It's late in the game for that to start, but at this point it's still not too late. If his family and finances get pulled out from under him and there's no provision made for where he's going to live, it could get to a point where it actually is too late.

This is what makes Wise and Boyd so pathetic to me, they weren't just "trolling" Chris by threatening him into giving them money. They were roleplaying with him, playing video games for hours with him, sperging about media with him - if you read those Discord chats, they're getting into the characters way too much.
It's like they didn't have a life or real friends outside of the internet, so instead they had to manipulated this 36 year old autistic trans person with obvious mental problems into being their friend.
And this has been going on between Chris and Wise for what, almost a year? Yeah, Josh wasn't doing this for shits and giggles for that long.
These guys clearly have problems. They're in their mid twenties so they probably finished school with no friends, no girlfriends, and nothing to do but sit at home and play video games, read comics, and use Chris as their play thing.

They probably think they're better than Chris too, not realising that Chris does have some good things going on for him in real life. People buy his autographs for $50, he gets invited to conventions for free, people ask to take selfies with him, theres websites dedicated to chronicling his life, videos about him get tons of views, strangers will literally come to his home to tell him how much they love him.

Did they ever send him to classes on independent living? Job training for special needs people? How to manage having an apartment and living on your own? That sort of thing is what Chris desperately needs. It's fine that they took care of his speech impediment and sent him to school to learn the three Rs. But Chris really needs some sort of structured plan for how he's going to survive on his own.
The thing about the police report is that it leads to the same place as the shrink. When Chris is asked why these two assholes were able to make him do things like this, he's going to explain his alternate reality and prove conclusively that he's incapable of taking care of himself. The next obvious conclusion is that if he's incapable of taking care of himself, he's not a good caretaker for Barb either. It really doesn't matter which path you take, it all is leading to the same car crash. The only way to deaden the impact is to set aside immediate problems and begin to prepare for it.
I don't think that Chris would be charged with "elder abuse" if he was directed to punch Barb. I think that maybe these assholes that directed him to do this would be charged with encouraging a disabled man to harm his mother in an extortion scheme.
The worst thing about this whole situation is that these people who made Chris do this are walking around free instead of answering to their crimes. I hope something comes out of this and these guys are punished.
