The Critical Drinker

This take is a bit interesting because it does have someone actually dive in and rip apart a seemingly boring and derivative book made by the Critical Drinker. To be honest, I read some of the passages and I can't even tell if TCD even write it or fed a summary to an AI to make it for him or something. It basically confirms my suspicion of TCD being a typical youtube grifter since it doesn't seem as though he has much talent for writing. Funnily enough, it doesn't seem like his fans think so either. I guess it's more of an "always a bridesmaid; never a bride" sort of deal.

The issue with this video is that he spends waaaay too long taking jabs at TCD and his ilk before starting on the review. It just seems as though he can't seem to let that go. Other than that, It does seem as though people are starting to criticize TCD in areas other than a left-wing perspective.

Or make a movie. Its almost common ground with any grifter, they can talk big but sure as hell cannot make anything to prove they're better.

And we got a vid about another person that Drinker and his ilk loved to grind their axes against.
Brie Larson is the only wokie-type I feel a little bit of pity for. All of her actions were based on her agent telling her Captain Marvel is going to be the next big thing in the MCU, so get in early. Then she does right when the MCU goes to shit and she ends up the face of Woke MCU. Those decisions were logical ones to make at the time.

from the chad 90s toon version and the perfectly adequate tobey mcguire to well... tom holland

i dunno whether this or being half of the world's least appealing romeo and juliet is funnier, i'll let you people decide
At first I thought this video was either AI gen or text-to-speech because her voice just sounds so unnatural. But as it went on, I think that's just the way she talks. Hate how we can't tell today.

Anyway, the thing this video leaves out is we're talking about Hollywood and Humiliation Rituals here. Tom Holland likely had no choice in not accepting this role (or a role like it) if he wanted to continue making movies. Vigilant Citizen has done several articles documenting these weird humiliation rituals:

I don't. She chose to put herself front and center and, aside of the stupidity of her decisions, she chose to be obnoxious about it as well. She is very PR driven as we saw with her charade of a "just me at home doing normal things" youtube channel.

If she thought Captain Marvel was going to be the next big thing we can add fool to her list of inadequacies - Kevin Fiege can say it's a super dooper popular character as much as he wants but at the time he was saying this it had failed repeatedly being rebooted (about ten times at that time if I remember correctly. No one who carried out a scintilla of due diligence would have seen that character as a winner at that time or since. She bet her career and reputation on that fallacy.

It wasn't all her agent's fault. She's an adult woman who is responsible for her own bad decisions. As far as I'm aware she didn't fire her agent.

And those decisions were not logical to make at the time - unless she way happy to take the truckload of money offered and flush her career and reputation in exchange. The character was a failed character at the time and the whole "woke" pressures pushing it were never successful with the audience. People talk about a backlash against the woke as if it was popular 5 or ten years ago. It was never popular and it was never successful - see Ghostbusters (2016). All that has changed is the astroturfing has become less effective, the Musk acquisition of twitter being particularly important, and the losses from those repeated failures (because it was never popular!) have built up to the point they can no longer be ignored.

Drinker's video, as seems to be becoming a theme, is rather superficial.

He starts with Room (2015) the great success that won her an Oscar and and catapulted her into superstardom. Thing is.... Room was certainly loved by the critics and of course she got the Oscar but..... it took $36m at the box office so $18m roughly back to the filmmakers. The production budget was $13m so as long as cost overruns and marketing costs came in under £5m the film at least did not lose money. Those figures don't appear to be in the public domain but less than $5m marketing for a film that got the full Academy Award marketing machine push? Doesn't seem likely. So the great success that launched her probably failed.

He didn't mention Bhasmati Blues (2017) at all. If you've never heard of it don't worry - most haven't and those that have hated it. It had a "limited" theatrical release and took a mighty $15k (yes that's $15k not $15m) at the box office. So despite the award winning actress at the height of her acclaim; fail.

He also didn't mention the Netflix film, Unicorn Store (2017) (Directed by and starring Larson also starring Samuel L Jackson and Joan Cusack). With that pedigree guaranteed success, right? Remember the poor nobody schmuck that dared to tweet doubting the guaranteed brilliance of what was to be revealed to the world? The guy who got slapped down brutally by the Netflix account listing Larson's critical awards treating the guy as a retard. Well once the world saw Unicorn Store and was shocked by what an inept embarrassing piece of trash it was Netflix went vewy vewy quiet about it and now tries to pretend it never happened.

I'll pass on feeling sorry for the obnoxious entitled Hollywood actress who was given everything, earned nothing and chose to throw most of it away.

Drinker's video, as seems to be becoming a theme, is rather superficial.
You can read that in one of two ways: either those things don't add to the overall narrative, if you assume it's more-or-less correct in the first place; or they are omitted to shape an overall narrative, which, if we consider celebrity like a reality tv show, Larson couldn't object too much if she were inclined to, as you might look bad in the edit, but don't give the editor material that makes you look bad.

Drinker, at least, isn't like some of his friends that occupy the same space: he has a tendency to want to keep things short. Which at least shows he's not someone who over-indulges in acceptable targets.

Tom Holland's name is starting to get attached to James Bond. He's going to have to start blasting Tren if he wants to become a believable Jams Bond.

Brie Larson couldn't foresee her movie would be so bad, but she is totally responsible for her own behavior during the press tours to the point even her co-workers were fed up with her. She landed the role and started to act as if she alone was going to take Marvel to the top and the rest of the cast wasn't up to her level.

Madame Web was much more a disaster than Capitan Marvel and Dakota Johnson took it gracefully. IICR, she rightfully criticised the industry taking bad decisions, not the fans.

Yes, men do not experience emotions the same way women do,
Indeed, but soyboys are the exception because they grew up and developed in emasculated environments, so they've basically socialised as women.

I agree that The Drinker is a grifter. However, most of the criticism I see of him doesn’t focus on his grifting but rather on the fact that he’s not a left-leaning grifter. If he were, most of his YouTube essayist detractors would likely be fine with him.

As others have said, there’s plenty to critique about him—his gaming grift, the Fandom Menace circlejerk, hiding his real opinions to appeal to said circlejerk, his narrow views on masculinity, or his lazy filler videos, etc.—but his critics rarely touch on these points.

I do agree with The Drinker that mainstream media movies have leaned heavily toward messaging, poor quality, emasculating men, guilt-tripping, and obnoxious female characters, so I still like him more than Disney shills and any BreadTuber.

But thing is, this is almost white noise by this point. Every grifting twerp with a camera and a face that looks like a Mr.Potato Head had said the same shit over and over, but they never offer any alternatives, and the stuff they make usually is just, if not more so, preachy and badly made.
