I was looking up Warhammer 40k 3rd edition for nostalgia reasons, and learned that it's often considered the best version of the game. Especially the original release which had army lists in the back of the book, and was very well balanced despite a few missing rules that would be considered standard in future. It shows it's age in places, but is supposedly a good mix of depth and simplicity. Something like 3rd edition would never happen again as GW is too big and corporate now, and even a re-print of 3rd is unlikely.

I saw comments saying that Warhammer Fantasy 6th edition is the diffitive version of that game, but I've never played it.

I happened to see LGRs video complaining about The Sims 4, in it he compares it to The Sims 2 and how that version was superiour. While most people prefer The Sims 3 (including LGR by the sound of it) the performance and gameplay issues make it tough to go back to. Again, we'd never see another Sims 2 because EA have found a formula that prints money so are unlikely to ever change.

This got me wondering what other games are like this. What are equels, editions, or even releases of a game you consider difinitive?

Homeworld Remastered with the player patch comes to mind, though that's only because I've been thinking about playing it again today.
Sadly, Cataclysm still doesn't have a proper remaster.
I can't speak from experience but I know some people thought D&D 3.5 was so good they made Pathfinder.

Really good idea for a thread however i cant think of any even tho i know for a fact ive specifically sought out certain versions of games out of reccomendation or some other upsetting update that made the rounds.
Instead since i cant think of anything ill point out the obvious and most popular definive edition debate which is that of minecrafts, some swear by the original beta editions or the last update before combat was changed while others prefer the mod filled 1.12 and even 1.7.10 but its clear that no other game has as much of a diverse playerbase when it comes to which version they find to be the "best".
Personally speaking tho your nothing but a pussy if you play any edition after 1.16 tho technically 1.19 was the last version before they added tranny and blm flavourtext to the menu so if you wanna get technical thats the last playable version.

You can talk about shit version too (I made a similar thread about movies last year, but that was more focused on the waves of shitty remasters.)

Speaking of which, the remaster of Dead Rising is horribly botched. Characters are race swapped, attractive or sexy characters are made ugly, and strangely all mention of Veitnam are removed. But the most baffling part is they removed TJ Rotolo's voice lines. Even if they wanted new recordings, he was never contacted to reprise the role. Likely because the studio wants to make the Frank-in-name-only from Dead Rising 4 to be seen as the real one.

Cheap answer, but any PC port of a video game. Mods and community curated patches can make almost PC port of a game "definitive" down to player preference.
I agree. But I'm going to be a pedantic shit and say it depends on the port. The PC version of Halo was inferiour to the console versions, but was used as a basis for most ports going forward.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine was better on N64.

Pretty much all the Resident Evil games up until 5 were better on console. Though RE4 is up for debate because the GameCube had better graphics, PS2 had more content, and the PC ports were based on the PS2 version. I wonder if there's a mod for the HD port that restored the gamecube textures? I know there's the fan made HD texture pack that's fantastic.

I recently completed Pacman world repac and honestly it replaces the original in every way, the physics are better, the bosses are better and the stages are better. I'm sure someone got mad at the changes but I honestly think they were done for the better.

People have been trying to make the saints row 2 port work for over 15 years now.
Just saying.

I forget the specifics. I know Jackals didn't have gold shields in the PC port, and certain textures were worse. It did have online play and the flamethrower though.
I'm not surprised that it's shit given that gearbox did it but how did they make the textures worse? I guess that was the tail end of the consoles-being-more-powerful
-than-computers era

Didn't they have multiple projects in the oven at the time? Let's not forget them getting fucked over by Valve at the time because of a lawsuit.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is the definitive version, despite not being the last (Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is). It had tons of options and the best balancing.

Persona 3 Portable is the best version of the game because it's uncensored unlike Reload, and though it is missing content from the PS2 version, it has exclusive content of its own.

Super Mario Bros. All-Stars has the best version of each game in it's compilation, it's missing content from the GBA versions but the screen crunch ruins those anyway. The NES versions aren't even in the running.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is better than the Wii version. It's obviously graphically inferior, but it's got a more interesting art style with the thick black outlines.
