I was looking up Warhammer 40k 3rd edition for nostalgia reasons, and learned that it's often considered the best version of the game. Especially the original release which had army lists in the back of the book, and was very well balanced despite a few missing rules that would be considered standard in future. It shows it's age in places, but is supposedly a good mix of depth and simplicity. Something like 3rd edition would never happen again as GW is too big and corporate now, and even a re-print of 3rd is unlikely.
I saw comments saying that Warhammer Fantasy 6th edition is the diffitive version of that game, but I've never played it.
I happened to see LGRs video complaining about The Sims 4, in it he compares it to The Sims 2 and how that version was superiour. While most people prefer The Sims 3 (including LGR by the sound of it) the performance and gameplay issues make it tough to go back to. Again, we'd never see another Sims 2 because EA have found a formula that prints money so are unlikely to ever change.
This got me wondering what other games are like this. What are equels, editions, or even releases of a game you consider difinitive?
