The Disgaea Thread

Necro since I'm playing 7 and I'm pretty pleased with it. After 6 felt like a massive downgrade, 7 is back to form with fixing a ton of issues.
First of all you have a full roster of demons and monsters, no more "everyone is humanoid" bullshit. Your plot NPC roster is pretty small so I still use generics in the story mode. Some generics are also more unique with their abilities, which is nice for more strategic gameplay.
The plot itself is better. You have more complexity in the setting and the cast actually has a part to play in the game rather than tagging along the MC, sadly the MC comes off as very plain and unmemorable.
The gameplay is the usual Disgaea deal, there is no more auto battle (though you can use it on stage replay) and the difficulty is overall very easy, especially if you use the new Nether Hospital gacha system to get some broken gear.
The animations are better, and feel more inline with the old 2D animations.

tl;dr, I'm having fun with it
Very interested after hearing this, thank you. Absolutely hated 6 after being a lifelong fan so I'm glad that 7 sounds like it's back to the good stuff.

I managed to finish the game. Overall I had a lot of fun with it, and liked the story and think it has the best expanded cast since 3. But I do wish it had more of a jump in levels between stages and reasons to engage more with the tons of systems, as it is it's very easy (though you could argue Disgaea was always on the post game). I wish the jumbo size units mechanic had more to do with the gameplay, as it is it's neat to break some stages but kinda underused since you can either completely bypass stages or completely fuck yourself if you fail to kill a boss and it goes jumbo size.

Now I'm not sure If I should go back and play 2 and 4 since they've been sitting in my library for a while or play a pirated copy of 7 since its hard to go back to older Disgaea games after the QOL introduced in the newer games.

I've been looking into this, and apparently there is no such thing as a "timeline" for this series, right? Every game seems to take place whenever and it's not really ever elaborated on, the closest thing to a canon I see is that 5 seems to be a prequel.
If I start at 5 and then play chronologically from 1, I don't think I'm missing out on anything, right? Speaking of which, are there any preferred console/PC releases or is it all good?

It's sort of kind of a multiverse. There are a bunch of different netherworlds each inhabited by different demons and ruled by a demon overlord.

Most games take place in different netherworkds and are self contained stories although characters from previous games will show up to make cameos.

And yes even though I believe 5 takes place first chronologically I recommend playing the first Disgaea first since it's the simplest game mechanically and it'll ease you into the series.

I played a little bit of both and I like 5 better so I will stick with that for now. The DLC the game came with does make you pretty OP, tho.
I recall one being stuck on the PS3, for some reason. Is it any good or can I skip that one?

That would be D2 a better darkness, it's pretty good. Same cast as thr first game but with the more modern graphics and mechanics of the later games.

I'd give it a shot if you liked the cast from 1.

Is there really no way to play this game other than on the real hardware or an emulator? No re-releases or mobile ports or anything like that?

It's never been re released but if you have a Playstation plus membership you can get it on that service they have.
