The Disgaea Thread

I have no problems with the 3D overhaul granted they allow for much more customization for all of the generics and main characters. I just hope this isnt a Pokemon situation where as the game went 3D, the team developing the game starts to stop giving a shit. I will give them this though, the models at least look expressive and transition decently well into 3D.
I hope it will be for the Playstation as well.
I believe the PS4 version is coming to Japan but I don't think there's any confirmation for it coming anywhere else.

Wow, I can't believe how well the artstyle translated to 3D. I just saw this today. I had a lot of fun with 5, and loved 2 as a kid, so I hope this is just as good!

It's only for Switch. The reason why is because the Switch version of Disgaea 5 and the various remakes/ports of older games sold significantly better compared to the PS4 versions, enough so that Nippon Icchi pretty much said that the Switch is their main priority from now on.

There is always a chance they will eventually put in on other systems, but for the time being the Switch is what is generating most of their profit from the last few years.

It's confirmed for PS4 but only in Japan, the west will only get it on the Switch from what's been mentioned. Pretty weird to have games release on other platforms only in one region, reminds me of the Vita but that console was very dead in the west while the PS4 is massive so who knows.

I played Disgaea 1-3 and dropped off after that. I came back to Disgaea D2 a few years later, and enjoyed the new mechanics enough that I ended up picking up Disgaea 5 after that. Despite enjoying the gameplay of 5, I just couldn't get past the main characters being so damn unlikeable.

That all said, the new Disgaea game has piqued my interest. I'm gonna miss the sprites, but the 3D models look pretty good.

Happens all the time for RPGs in particular, Other examples include the DS version of Ni no Kuni and the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI. They were released alongside the PS3/PS4 versions, respectively, but they were ignored for international release(DQ XI in particular used a password system that allowed you to move saves back and forth between the 3DS and PS4 versions of the game, and also generate passwords that create loot-filled save files for the first two Dragon Quest games on the Famicom, since in Japan they used passwords instead of actual save files like the western releases for NES)

This can't be true, NISA had a fuckload of trouble with getting Falcom games to get traction on the switch to no avail, and Falcom just said fuck it if you want Nintendo ports you have to pay for it yourself because it's not worth our time and money. Half the shit NISA is pushing is Falcom titles in the west and nothing has come out ahead on the switch as far as I know.

Also why would they bring Disgaea 6 over to the PS4 in the west? by the time it comes out, the PS5 will be the new system. My guess is since it's coming over here in the summer and not January we'll get a listing for it on the PS5.

Bandai did the same shit with Tales and ported them over to the PS4 physically and not the PS3. Atlus did the same thing with persona.

I know this is a Disgaea thread and not specifically a Nippon ichi thread but I just thought of Soul nomad and the world eaters again and I always wondered if they were somehow embarrassed of this game cause I don't recall it ever getting any enhanced ports even though at one point in time they seemed to love doing that with their games. Like Disgaea is obviously their favourite child so it's a given that it's a long running series with older entries getting vita ports but even La pucelle and Makai kingdom got at least one port.

There's a fuckload of DLC coming for Disgaea 6, more than usual.

This is further adding credence that there's going to be a GOTY edition released later for more platforms.

Also there's a joke in there about Etna no longer being flat since she's in 3d now.

I'll put up with the new look but it simply is a straight-up visual downgrade for me.

You know what it is?

The character animations are too jerky and/or slow. The sprites had much smoother animation. When he kicks the energy ball like a soccer ball, his momentum stops for a good second or two while his kick lines up.

Holy shit it’s been nearly five years since the last game...

5 for me seemed to have perfected the series’ gameplay formula for me. Story and character wise it’s probably my second favorite. It’s gonna be tough to follow up on it.

Not sure how I feel about the new 3D look, I get wanting to mix things up visually, but I would prefer more fluid and less stiff looking sprites.

Man, I remember seeing an ad for the first Disgaea in a game magizine and seeing the trailer on one of those preview discs. It was jut a bunch of the attacks set to that one voiced song. I instantly bought the game based on those two things alone.

I really like Disgaea but I disliked the fifth game for its cast and feeling like the devs recycled story from the last game. Then NISA started making a "Witch" series, which, while bland in gameplay (except Refrain that was fantastic), was awesomely written - just dark enough but not completely going over with the edge.
I really miss the times when companies would release games constantly rather than having one big game every 10 years.

Disgaea 6 is pretty good, but a general downgrade for me.

I was personally a big fan of 5, I liked the space aesthetic even if Void Dark's army was a lacking in meaningful lieutenants(Suikoden 2 was like this, the northern country that was invading was pathetically small when you finally get to it in the end). 6's story is considerably weaker; I feel like if they translated "God of Destruction" to something like "Super-majin" it would have been easier to swallow, with how often every character says it. The face on the mob conveys this so they should've went with it. Regardless, the story structure is largely the same with 5 levels per chapter, 15 story chapters, more than a few are solid puzzles/challenges with geo panels that you can't just auto-pilot.

6's autopilot is great for a grinding game, and I love setting up a map and "baking" characters for reincarnation while I walk away to do a load of laundry or whatever. Programming the AI isn't particularly necessary, but it's very in-depth and fun to try, which is an incredible callback to Carnage Hearts on the PS1. This feature alone makes me feel like the game is worth the purchase, despite all my other reservations.

Disgaea's ridiculous numbers take another huge step in this game; level cap gets raised twice via Dark Assembly bills, first from 9,999 to 9,999,999 and then later to 99,999,999. Stats are likewise ridiculous and start in the thousands, and quickly climb into the quadrillions and quintillions. As such, there's the usual Carnage Dimension(both as an additional difficulty to the existing levels, and it's own 5-stage post game chapter itself), and now a difficulty further beyond that, the Rakshasa dimension(an indian type of demon people might recognize from La-Mulana 2, or Jake Alley). The autopilot/Demonic Intelligence feature makes these crazy difficulties feel very approachable, moreso than any previous game in my opinion.

Item World takes a noticeable step DOWN in quality, which is a shame. I replayed 5 recently, and the difference in quality between that version's Item World and 6's is like night and day. The core functionality is there; endless levels, farm innocents, hunt bonus rooms, alternate progression to the main game, etc. I guess I'll just hit bullet points as they come to mind:
  • bonus list rewards on stage clears are largely HL/XP, with a heavy emphasis on consumables, and usually Diver/Filler items. It's pretty hard to get equipment, let alone rare equipment.
  • enemy variety is a little drab since there are less classes/monster types(so there's less animation work, I suspect; this is as much a problem with the main game as the Item World)
  • because of the main story's cut corners, there are far less interesting tilesets for the Item World to utilize. I would hope this could get patched, but I doubt it
  • many stages have multiple Null geo symbols, and not enough colored geo symbols vs. geo tiles colored on the map to get a good Geo Chain going that does a satisfying full clear of the map/fills bonus gauge. Similarly, it's incredibly rare to find any maps where the Geo Panels are actually an obstacle or even a speed bump in the flow through item worlds. I've had about 500 floors done and have autopiloted all of them unless I see an Innocent I want dead or a bonus gate to grab, and have never been roadblocked by a Reverse Damage or No Melee/No Ranged road block. This may be attributed to the lack of a Sage-type geo focused class or related skills.
  • I feel like there's less Bonus Room variety than 5, and 6 largely just copies 5's, down to the Item God tower of duplication(which now has a Prinny on top that gives you a choice of small, medium or large boxes, and I've only gotten extra Unique innocents from these). Bank Robbery, shopping centers, Professor & Clone rooms make a comeback.
  • most maps are very small and short, and you can skip or clear a lot of rooms with just two good throws. You can rush rooms like in previous Disgaeas and don't need to do full clears of mobs to gain levels, which is ironic since the autopilot can be trusted to do this for you!
  • It seems like it should be rarer but you will regularly run into a floor that is normal, but has an enormous amount of extra Lucky Board mobs, Level Sphere objects, chests, and 2-4 random innocents. I actually find these to be a nuisance though, because the innocents are frequently much lower quality than whatever you're farming. They're not outright harmful, but it's kind of annoying and an easy floor type in an already grossly easy Item World.
  • The Innocent Town area after killing the 10th floor's Item General/King/God does NOT have the Innocents hanging around with silly lines anymore. Kind of an odd omission. You also don't get to "steer" the item with more bonus rooms, more likely invasions, more likely spheres, etc.
  • No level fish is an improvement, I didn't like those mobs, but no Pirates/Invaders is sad.
  • Item enhancement is done through a simple point system, no more passing bills through an assembly to gain movement/attack range etc. You just buy it outright. This point system also allows you to buy Innocents directly at interesting rates, or sell useless/extra ones back for points.
Ultimately I'd love to have the Demonic Intelligence system shoved into D5's Item World.
Music's about the same quality, voice-acting is above average with some interesting characters. UI is charming, the Dark Assembly is a cabaret now instead of a space war room, and voting is tracked with wine glasses instead of death stars, very cute. Etna is mega flat in 3D. Evilities feel a little dumbed down from 5 but there's still hundreds to customize from. D-Merit system is kinda nice but simplistic, not fully fleshed out imo. There's also no skill sharing/training anymore, so teaching heals and Espoir to various units is a lot tougher/happens later than most games, and weapon types no longer teach weapon-specific skills anymore; there's no difference between wielding a wand and a sword now, other than the base stats before you Item World the hell out of them, other than how some Evilities and resistances will benefit you. You might as well lean into spears, bows and guns even harder in general.

Looking forward to the Killia and Usalia DLC, but the current available characters are pretty good and I like throwing money at NIS to tell them I like what they make. You should to. I'd rate it a 6.5/10 but still strongly recommend for any existing fan to buy and play. It takes a lot of strange steps backwards in systems just to include 3D graphics, but the auto-play feature is so good I think it's worth any previous player's time to try. You get the same gameplay of previous games with the added variant playstyle of a hero manager/cookie clicker grinder.

I started disgaea 6 today, I am enjoying it because it is disgaea either way, but yeah a lot feels like a downgrade, it also for some reason feels less responsive, not only because of the bad framerate, but I feel the cursor moves worse than in previews games, maybe its just me tho

I can't count the hours I sunk into grinding Disgaea and D2 on the PSP. Tons of fun.

I have D3 and D4 on my PS3 but I'm in no rush to sink my life into them at this point with the backlog I already have going on. Will probably pick up D5 and D6 used at some point because why not (I have a problem.)
