The Disgaea Thread

I have yet to try Disgaea 6, but I really don't like the shift in graphics from 2D to 3D and the lack of customization (when it comes to generics) that people seem to complain about. Zed is also uninteresting as a character to me, but then again I pretty much never cared for any of the MCs besided Laharl (and not just for nostalgia reasons).

I've finished D5's main story a year ago, but I never reached Baal (only did some postgame stuff) and I've lost my savefile from then. I might eventually play it again, but right now I'm busy playing D4 Complete, and I gotta say, I don't understand why people hype this game's story, because it's really bad (even for a Disgaea game). Although I do have fun with it because I enjoy the mechanics (it's kind of rough in some areas compared to 5 but it's still enjoyable, unlike 1 and 2, which feel dated) I don't really care about the plot at all, and the characters are really unfunny, considering they have nothing much to say beyond their gimmick (by the end of it I wished for Fuka to get literally deleted from the game or something because of how annoying her "dream" gimmick got), and they really don't grow at all in the end. Say what you want about 5's cast (the development there was generic as heck and for some characters like Seraphina, it was terrible), but at least there was something.

I dunno, maybe I'm getting old, but I feel like the series went into the wrong direction with 6. I am interested in the new "reincarnation" mechanics (not so much about auto battle because 1's mobile version already had it, it's not exactly new), but as for everything else...eh.

The 3d sprites look absolutely horrible and make the game run like ass. If D7 ever even comes out I hope the revert to the classic sprites.

I doubt they will change it, but my biggest problem is just that mechanically it is very unbalanced, it has fast and fun ways to level up, but the rest is very simple compered to pretty much every disgaea game since 3.

What I love about 4 is that imo has a lot of the most fun stages, 3 and 4 both have some of the best imo, thats why I was kind of sad when d2 and 5 want back to geo blocks instead of cubes, doesnt help that d5's stages are all just big and kind of boring a lot of the time

It looks like a glorified mobile game, that's for sure.

I basically blasted through 4's main story, and I can't say I remember stages that were "fun" when it came to the geo blocks puzzles (there's one main story stage in particular that made me roll my eyes, because you start at the top of a "tower" and you're supposed to get to the bottom of it to grab a geo block and throw it at the other "tower" to reach the enemies, but in my case I just used Vulcanus with a gun and killed both enemies that weren't even attacking me back for some reason, because why not). I know that there are the X-dimension stages which are heavily puzzle based stages, but I did some item world diving and so far I haven't been lucky with the mystery rooms to get tickets yet.

i loved the classic style, i wanna program my own for fun, but i can barely program to the nes levels lol

tried looking up videos about Disgaea 6 but it seems no big youtuber is really talking about it. Disgaea has always been a nich series but even the older titles had more traction than this.

Which Disgaea was it that overcooked your PS3 cpu to a crisp on account of shoddy coding.
I might be misremembering and it was PS2.

it happened both with 4 and d2, it was bad coding with the translation, they fucked up and made some weird loop that broke the ps3s overheating shutdown

I used to like 4’s story, but nowadays, I just look at it and can’t look past the issues you mentioned. Still have a soft spot for Valvatorez though.

And yeah, by the looks of things, 6 doesn’t look like it’ll appeal to me. Which is a shame, as I felt 5 was the best in the series in terms of gameplay mechanics.

I’m not entirely cold on future main characters, but Laharl was definitely my favorite, hands down.

Couple of chapters in 6, it's not bad but it kinda feels half assed. Every cutscene is really short and the game just dumps a lot of mechanics on you rather than get the player to try them, or make them fit in the narrative.
At least battles finally got interesting in Chapter 4, though I have yet to actually need to grind or make any kind of build.
The characters are pretty likable at least by now and the jokes occasionally get a chuckle.

And I finished 6, overall while a disappointment it was still fun. The game is insanely short - it took me about 14 hours to beat and I'm pretty sure some of them is from leaving my ps5 on. There is no difficulty, while I used the DLC characters, my main characters were still pretty close stat wise and 95% of the stages are just turning on auto battle, which does its job relatively well (the only times I needed to strategize was one stage with zombies that give poison with massive health reduction effects). I didn't grind once or go to the item world.

The biggest problem is the lack of art content. There is basically minimal amount of characters and quests to be a passing product - Every side character is a common character sprite rather than a unique sprite, there are no unique enemies. Ton of memorable monsters and classes were cut, the monsters themselves are now the same as regular humanoids. The animations are jankier, there are less special attacks and those attacks are way less visually satisfying than previous games. It's just lazy. The plot itself is insanely basic and doesn't have any fun distractions Disgaea games usually have. It really feels less like a Disgaea than any of the PS2 games did. Post game is fighting Laharl 6 times and Baal.

Still, having a bunch of characters beating enemies up with massive numbers is always fun, but I wouldn't recommend anything close to full price.

Disgaea D2 is probably my favorite. The soundtrack slaps really hard and the pixels are fucking amazing. Disgaea 4 a 2nd favorite. was really fun and the story was just as addicting as Disgaea 1.
Disgaea 2 was pretty fun, adell being a pretty OK protag.
Disgaea 3 (one I've played the longest because owned a vita for a long time) was eh. The story wasn't as engaging or interesting but I got addicted to maxing the shit out of my succubus and red mage 9999 reincarnation x100.
I haven't played anything past D2 except Disgaea RPG while gacha shit it has a good amount of things to do and I really like the Xeno versions of the characters. Sucks I missed the la pucelle collab, but was able to get Makai kingdom Pram and overlord Zetta.

This is disappointing to hear. I'm downloading the demo for D6 now and I'm diffenitely not paying anything but a steep discount if it's over in 14 hours. I keep chasing the dragon which was D1, unique and amazing at the time and even fun to grind. Is there another game that is close to this series but better? Fire emblem? (Never tried it).

My favourite trpg is Wild Arms XF. I wouldn't recommend Fire Emblem, at least not anything including and after Awakening, it's stuck between trying to appeal to fans of the old games and anime obsessed zoomers.

Wow, that was fast. Especially considering how large the gap was between 5 and 6.

Kinda hope this fixes whatever issues six had based on what I've read about it, but I won't hold my breath.

I do like the idea of one of the main characters being an obnoxious weeb though. And I'll admit, I kinda like the traditional Japanese aesthetic they have going on.

They've been talking about this pretty much all year. Quick rundown, incomplete because I can't remember shit:
Auto-battles are back, but require a consumable to do. The consumable is earned by playing the game normally.
Weapon skills and monster weapons are back
The massive inflation is gone, lv 9999 is cap again.
42 generics, with a fuck ton of returning favorites, including the male samurai, which hasn't been seen since D3.
DLC already planned, current announced is only previous Disgaea characters.
Juice bar confirmed.
Item world exists now,
New gimmick is the godzilla mode, who's name is something I don't remember. One ally and one enemy can turn gigantic and attack both the map and one another.

I'm pretty sure 6 was released knowing it was shit, judging by the rapid 'We know, we know, just PLEASE do the surveys so we can make a better game next time.' they came back with.

I finished today both storylines of the La Pucelle remake on the Switch. It's always fun to go back and play a game that started an entire series, everything is primitive but you see the roots and what worked and what didn't. It's overall fun and the ability to skip animations makes it far more playable than the original, the extra scenario is a nice addition though a bit short (though I did need to level up a lot since the last chapter in it removes everyone except Prier). The ending is absolutely perfect.

The most interesting thing I noticed is that it felt like it had a lot more soul behind it than newer entries. Disgaea games after 2 started becoming way too meta, which only reduces in value as time goes and make the more important visceral scenes feel less impactful. The series also reduced the number of battlefield cutscenes in favour of VN cutscenes which suffer from having way less being able to show in them and make it easier for the viewer to jump too fast on the dialogue and miss what happened, or not get to the best parts of the soundtrack, which is also fantastic.

Next on the line is Labyrinth of Galleria. The previous game in that series is one of the most memorable games plot wise I played, though the gameplay was meh, at least it had some interesting ideas on how to play on the genre.

Necro since I'm playing 7 and I'm pretty pleased with it. After 6 felt like a massive downgrade, 7 is back to form with fixing a ton of issues.
First of all you have a full roster of demons and monsters, no more "everyone is humanoid" bullshit. Your plot NPC roster is pretty small so I still use generics in the story mode. Some generics are also more unique with their abilities, which is nice for more strategic gameplay.
The plot itself is better. You have more complexity in the setting and the cast actually has a part to play in the game rather than tagging along the MC, sadly the MC comes off as very plain and unmemorable.
The gameplay is the usual Disgaea deal, there is no more auto battle (though you can use it on stage replay) and the difficulty is overall very easy, especially if you use the new Nether Hospital gacha system to get some broken gear.
The animations are better, and feel more inline with the old 2D animations.

tl;dr, I'm having fun with it
