The Elder Scrolls

That's because it was based more on the 1982 Conan the Barbarian film than the actual Norse. The people at Bethesda have always kind of been fans of the film and you can see it in some of the other games in smaller amounts (the ebony broadsword in Morrowind is clearly modeled on the atlantean sword for instance), but with Skyrim they decided to go all out with it. There's a lot of bits in Skyrim where they've done things like put Ysgramor in what looks like a chinese knock off version of Thulsa Doom's armor that make me chuckle a bit when I see them.
Is it just me, or did Whiterun look like the capital of Rohan from LOTR?

I noticed stylistic influences with things like Game of Thrones. It's unsurprising given Bethesda was originally asked to create a Game of Thrones video game.
They definitely drew from more than one source for inspiration. A good chunk of the designs, ancient nordic in particular, draw pretty heavily from Conan though.

Yeah, they're big fans of LOTR too. A lot of the design choices in Oblivion can be traced to LOTR fanboyism, I think MK even said something about that.

MK did say the LOTR craze was to thank for Oblivion.

As the Tumblr said, had that craze not happen, things would of been different. Probably would of had a nice, more jungle looking Cyrodiil.
Probably would have kept Elven stuff as a magical silver instead of the greenish-gold Noldor inspired gear that made it into the final cut, or any number of other retcons that happened to make the world more in line with the LOTR aesthetic.
There were a few mods that came out for Morrowind that were based around making Cyrodiil based on the in-game lore and it's kind of funny to see how different those mods versions are from the one in Oblivion. Todd at one point said that they design TES games based on the world they want to make and experience they want to give the player and they fill in the lore and story to connect it to the franchise later, and when you see things like that I can believe it.

Considering lore and all, it is funny how things are compared to what was described in the books. Granted, it gets deemed as propaganda or Talos used CHIM to change the jungle of Cyrodiil into something but it really would of been nice if the setting of Cyrodiil was like in the PGE. Kirkbride did say in a Tumblr post that he wanted Eastern Cyrodiil to be as it was in PGE from the beginning.

As for Elven stuff as magical silver, Daggerfall did have the Elven gear in a sort of bright white/silver tone. Considering differences and all, it would be nice to see some sort of varities in the armors, seeing like regional differences in say leather armor. One other thing to share about some lore about Daggerfall (and just to include due to relation of an enemy it shares, Redguard), they did have dragons though Daggerfall's dragonlings would be retconned as an unrelated species. Redguard on the other hand had Nafaalilargus.

I do hope this isn't a double post since this is separated by some hours but I just wanted to leave this here, the place where I got the pic @Oglooger posted (the one with a guy who thinks Morrowind is some juvenile fantasy land):

This does make me wonder: how do you guys play your modded Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim? Ever try to in the way have making the game more immersive? More realistic? More or less fantasy (as in more fantastic looking creatures or getting rid of anything above steel respectively)? On that same note, how would anyone feel of Skyrim having "less fantasy", considering how you have people say they'd want to be rid of spriggans and draugr's.

I try to make shit more "lore friendly" along with immersion.
For Morrowind, not only did I enhance the graphics (since let's be fair they haven't aged and there were better looking games at the time), but I added more lore books, I added more Khajiit sub-species, Children and made it illegal to actually trade Dwenmer goods.

I'm still looking for an Oblivion mod to make Cyrodiil a jungle again.

Open World games generally don't look cutting edge for the time. Even GTA5 when it first came out on the PS3/360 had numerous low resolution textures. With Morrowind, the game came out a few months after GTA3 which looked much worse but didn't have the same level of distance fog Morrowind had.

I felt the distance fog in Morrowind was a bigger downer than the polygonal graphics, at least to me. Thankfully it's fixable unlike with Daggerfall.

Checking the Nexus, there are some jungle Cyrodiil mods:
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45974/?
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45960/?
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/31000/?

These are just some I found off a quick Google search. Never tried them though since I don't have interest in Oblivion right now.

Considering Morrowind, I only recently used a better face mod that stays in line with vanilla faces, giving them a much nicer, more updated look. Also been using Morrwind Comes Alive to get some random people in the world that walk around towns, drink in taverns, and try to kill me in the wilderness. Only thing I don't like is the clothing mod for one of them since it sells some armor more in line with Daggerfall (A tabard shouldn't be heavy armor with 80 defense, especially that is nothing more than some cloth worn over armor. Do like how it can make a for an easy fast buck in selling).

I use MCA, but I think I might have installed it wrong since now any female commoner I find will be naked.

Since "A Less Rude Song" states that the Dunmer have an aversion towards nudity, I'm gonna guess that my character is using a spell to see nude people or they're immigrants from the Illiac Bay.

Perhaps your character is was hit by Sheogorath in some way.

Hey, If I could see through Women's clothes too I really wouldn't complain.
Even if you saw through the clothes of say Jensine?

Getting back to mods, I pretty much only used some better faces mods for all three of the games since Morrowind. Never really used much else for mods though with Oblivion, I replaced the music with that of King's Field since I always used a couple race mods for a couple of PC's I played as. Outside that lore-unfriendly mods, I also used a house mod that actually does have more beds if I ever used companions.

I use something like 100+ mods on my Skyrim.

HD textures, ambient sound packs , immersive lighting, new UI, new armors, new bandit types, weather effects, FROSTFALL( a must have honestly), immersive needs (food, water, sleep), and a lot more.

Been pretty big into modding since Fallout e.

MCA is garbage, use this instead.
I guess it's good bye to naked commoners wandering the streets.

There was a funny story where I was getting chased by daedra and I was running away for my life.
suddendly when I was out of stamina, the daedra was close and ready to claw me and suddednly, a Paladin came out of nowhere and completley killed the Daedra.
I will never forget that paladin.

I don't particularly care about lore-friendliness so most of the mods I use are either mods that make characters look good or ones that solve annoying problems.
