The Elder Scrolls

I honestly didn't get into it until my second playthrough, once I was more familiar with how it works I started to enjoy it a lot more. Regarding the factions, there are actually more faction questlines than oblivion and skyrim but there's a bit more exclusivity for certain types of characters, as well as that you can't join more than one Great House. And pickpocketing in the game legit doesn't function how it was meant to and is broken, it needs a mod in order to be fixed.
Morrowind didn't hook me either until I was able to dump a bunch of gold into training and I stopped faillng skill checks more often than not. And like the guy above said, unmodded pickpocketting is worthless. Success at it has a hard cap of some absurd percentage of 50 or so.
Sadly I can't find a fix within openMW itself for the pickpocket issue but whatever I'll just frenzy the guy.

I guess I'll give it a few more hours and just see if it clicks with me.

Apparently a lot of the devs are livestreaming when they work on it now. I'm not aware of Beyond Skyrim doing this but maybe I'm just not enough of a twitchfag to know.
Beyond Skyrim devs are too busy trying to out Nazis and TERFs to actually make a mod. There's a thread about it here.

So getting into my stride with Morrowind and I'm doing alright. I'm really missing a lot of the QOL features from Skyrim though and honestly I only started MW because it's obvious Skywind is never coming out. Couple of things I'm missing:
  • I hate how I have to talk to practically everyone to find quests in this game. I miss having NPCs either come to me with their problems or eavesdropping on conversations. There's too many redundant NPCs and there's no way I can avoid them. If anyone can point me to a conversation mod that works with OpenMW I'd appreciate it.
  • I know this isn't an Elder Scrolls thing, but I wish there could be some hint as to what a quest's recommended level. I'm the type of guy who focuses on the quests he already has instead of letting them pile up. Since the Dark Brotherhood stuff starts up fairly I go straight into it, forgetting that was actually DLC stuff. Once getting into Mournhold and doing the stageplay side quest I get my ass handed to me.
  • Also, and this may be controversial, but the journal is a joke. Relevant info gets buried and even filtering by topic or quest leaves out useful info.

  • Going around town and asking NPCs for rumors often leads you to at least a couple quests. Still, that's definitely the downside of padding the game with NPCs to make the cities feel bigger. That, and every NPC breaking out an encyclopedia when you ask them about a topic.
  • That's been a major criticism of the expansions. There's a small amount of leveling in Morrowind, mostly having to do with whether weaker or stronger creatures spawn, so quests sending you to a dungeon with mostly creatures are often doable no matter your level. NPCs are always the same level, so be wary of that. Still, most bandits and smugglers aren't particularly high level.
  • The journal used to be even worse; you couldn't sort by whether quests were completed or not.

Morrowind is definitely a game that can take time to get used to, and I'm speaking as someone that's only played the original Xbox version (never played a Bethesda game with mods and yet I still greatly enjoy a lot of them, go figure). I'd recommend looking up uesp.net, as that Wiki has all sorts of information on locations (including where they are on the map), quests, items, ingredients, and NPCs, it's how I managed to complete the game and both expansions.

It's probably my least favorite Elder Scrolls due to its rougher edges, but I still had a great time exploring this piece of gaming history.

Morrowind is pretty sick, was definitely mind blowing around the time it came out. Combat sucks but people cared less because it was just a crazy wild ride, fighting just came with the territory and was more clearly a skinned dice roll which I think most RPG players were fine with. It was hard not to get immersed, even if you were playing as a vicious psychopathic burglar like most people did. You ended up having a fairly unique experience every time you played and your character developed their own personality in your head. I found that to be very redeeming. They also did a pretty good job on the atmosphere. Elder Scrolls isn't my favorite high fantasy shit tbh but Morrowind nailed it pretty well somehow. Never played Arena or Daggerfall, but Oblivion and Skyrim have completely terrible atmospheres and the lore is absolutely not interesting or immersive. The opening sequence for Skyrim is such an insulting pain in the fucking dick. Having to walk around through a burning building and pick some faggot. I picked the Imperial and immediately killed him as soon as we got out of the cave . That taught him to trust an inmate on fucking death row.

The I ran around naked killing wolves or dogs I believe, then I went to his village or whatever, got pissed off that I couldn't kill children, made a bunch of jokes IRL about drinking mead, tried to fuck a barkeeper's daughter, got roped into finding some garbage for them instead. Traveled into a boring crypt, saw an untrustworthy faggot trapped, begging for my help. Stared at him for a second, considered the options, killed him while he was still restrained (turns out that was the right move too) , I don't remember anything past that. I ran around for a long time. I remember being impressed that following the river eventually led to a town. Other than that, Skyrim blows.

Oblivion got the Elf Killing Chad, how is that not awesome?

I don't know, I didn't get around to playing it back when it was new and I have no interest now

Skyrim was my First Elder Scrolls and I still played Oblivion and then Morrowind. You just gotta adjust your tolerance.

Your welcome, make sure my guy doesn't die in Xcom.
I tried, they've aged too poorly for me to ever take seriously now. I can barely get on with Morrowind in the past 10 years. Makes sense, game is pretty rough, but without that immersive aspect and more traditional RPG elements of the game, and admittedly just wishing I could go back 20 years again and play it for the first time, it just isn't an enjoyable game series for me. I do think Skyrim is pretty weak tho. Fallout 3 is a little bit more enjoyable than it, imo. Which is also a pretty fucking retarded game.

At least in Skyrim you can get more ammo than in Fallout 3.

Yeah, if only shooting things with a bow & arrow were ever fun in an Elder Scrolls game, ever. it took at least a few days for me to stop getting dopamine trickle when I used the AIDS auto-aim system Blowing innocent people's entire head off in slow motion was good shit.

Im currently leveling up random skills on my latest skyrim character to get to 80 and smack the ebony warrior around, there is nothing fun about bow and arrow or crossbow. The aiming really sucks, there's no bloody mess perk or anything to make it interesting when the mobs die, constantly sneaking because the 2x damage bonus from sneak attack with a bow (I know it's more with perks but w/e I don't have those perks yet lol) is too good to pass up but it's so boring crouch walking around everywhere, you almost HAVE to use a bow or crossbow in first person view because you're shit out of luck aiming decently if you dont... just bleh

I feel like I'm gonna die of old age before we even see gameplay for TES6.
Bold of you to assume it will ever even exist. That's Todd's next great trick, the ultimate lie, to sell a game that does not and never will see the light of day.

The killcam can be kind of satisfying sometimes but you're right. People rely on it mostly because it's the most cost effective way of dealing with enemies. Personally I always invest into magic for my characters just because bows are pure cancer, but to each their own.

So I must sadly declare that I'm dropping Morrowind. I simply got burned out by all the worthless faction quests and never got to a point where anything hooked me. I caved and just read the plot synopsis online.

I can absolutely see why people love this game more that TES4 and 5. The world is interesting enough, with a unique aesthetic and lovely soundtrack. Funny enough, most of my issues with the game are similar to my issues with the other games (lackluster quests, boring combat, getting to godhood way too early). I already moaned about having to scour for quests and I'm not a guy that likes alt tabbing to wikis. I'm just watching this video now and it's reinforcing my thoughts on the game:
Didn't Todd Howard say they can take as long as they want with 6 because ESO is there for Elder Scrolls fans in the meantime? lmfao
Speaking of it, how is ESO?
