Are Arena and Daggerfall worth playing in (current year)?

I still have Daggerfall on my backlog but I know you should get the fan made patch to restore some quests and make it more enjoyable like Vampire the Masquerade.

I actually started playing Daggerfall recently for the first time and I think if I ever play Morrowind again I'll be more receptive. Daggerfall is a HUGE game compared to the future titles. I think the main thing to keep in consideration if you do start playing is that it takes some time to beat quests and you can spend hours fully searching dungeons and still not find everything. I recommend you toggle cheats if only so you can enable teleporting to quest markers in dungeons if you hit dead ends.
I tended to save scum my ass off when it came to quests. When you ask, say, the mages guild for a quest they basically gave you one from a set list, and if it was a mcguffin fetch quest they'd roll out a random dungeon location. I would just reload until they'd give me the "defend the mages guild from 3 leveled bandits" quest. Then I would sell their leveled gear and buy magic training with the proceeds. I became the Guildmaster of the Mages's Guild even though I was a glorified security guard.

Anyway, I plan on playing Daggerfall again but I'm waiting for Daggerfall Unity since it looks like it'll be feature complete playable sometime in the next year.

I really like the Morrowind theme but honestly, I think Jeremy Soule is overrated anyway.
Overrated compared to who? Like retrospectively he's created some of my favorite soundtracks with Kotor, Supreme Commander, Guild Wars, and the Elder Scrolls games

Only thing I would say he's been a lot less active now than he used to be a decade ago

Yes if you patch them and aren't ashamed of using the dev tools every now and then. Daggerfall has a tendency to break such that it's unwinnable.

Or you just ay it as a sandbox and make your own fun. That works too.

Basically any Japanese vidya composer? The Witcher games also had very memorable soundtracks, if it has to be western. Or hell, the fucking Banner Saga.
Going just "basically any" isn't great when asking for examples
And while the Witcher soundtrack is good I still think a lot of Soule's work is better

They should just hire the nip that composed the Final Fantasy XV soundtrack. I’ve been playing it recently and he seems to be a big fan!

Redfall isn't looking so good, with the rumors of rushed development to cover 76 and now this.

To be fair while Jeremy Soule is a good composer he debatably wasn't the best composer in the franchise. I still find Daggerfall's OST to be the best in the series.
Part of the reason why is because the game has dozens of themes like you're constantly hearing new ones and since it's Midi it all feels distinct. I know Daggerfall's composer idolizes Soule which is a shame since I thought he did an amazing job on the game.

Getting rid of Jeremy Soule potentially can breathe new life into the OST and focus it less on big epic orchestral themes like he's used to now with the series. Other composers like Jesper Kyd have a wider instrument range and I'd like to see a more punchy soundtrack.

Soule can do things besides big orchestra stuff, he just hasn't for the past few years for some reason. One of the reasons it may actually be good to switch assuming that was his problem and not the studio telling him to do it. Just contrast the TES theme in Morrowind vs. Oblivion or Skyrim. It's much simpler, slower, and very melancholy rather than booming and epic. I like it.

I'm a few days late, but big news to anyone interested in the Elder Scrolls series - Bethesda is giving away Elder Scrolls: Morrowind for free until the end of March as a part of a celebration of 25th anniversary! You have to go through a bit of a hassle by downloading Bethesda.net launcher, logging in and using the code TES25TH-MORROWIND on Bethesda's site. There is also bonus stuff for other Elder Scrolls installments, like Elder Scrolls: Legends; Elder Scrolls: Online and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition. If you were waiting for Morrowind to go on a sale or are just curious, then you better hurry the hell up!
