Diseased The Fidget Spinner Community - "It's Not A Trend, It's A Way Of Life."

What's with the recent trend of treating ADD like some kind of mental handicap on par with autism? I've been noticing that more and more over the last few years.
Actual real-for-real ADD is a legitimate mental handicap --a developmental disorder rather than mental illness but it is a handicap; in people with genuine real ADD the frontal lobe of the brain, responsible for executive planning, motivation, decision making, focus, and things like impulse control and the ability to organize tasks--that part of the brain is under-developed and if you were to look at the brain itself it would be smaller compared to people who dont have the condition. There are some studies saying that it is a developmental disorder rather than mental illness because it is a matter of growing out of the disease and that by the mid-20s to the 30s, the brain has developed further and that portion is not as small.

Wanting to have some societal disorder to make up for your lack of personality or because you think it's just quirky and cute; it's kinda shitty. It does hinder your life. Its not fun. ADD dudes are weird and have fewer friends, are flakey and forgetful, clumsy and uncoordinated, frantic and anxious, and often dont finish college. Its not something that gives you oppression points, and it doesnt add anything to you--it takes away. You can have some quirky mental disease and still not be an interesting person, or have a ton of personality. Your quality of life, measured against "normal" people, is much worse.

I could sperg more about this but it's major powerleveling and nobody gives a fuck.

Um, I guess, yeah, fidgeting is something you do subconsciously that does help the other part of your brain focus, I brought silly putty to school and would just roll it around and fuck with it in class when we had to do assigned reading or whatever, and only one teacher made a big deal out of it, it's better than constantly drumming your fingers or tapping that little button that pens have that clicks the pen in and out, but... Couldnt you just put a paperclip around a pencil and swirl that around? Or toss something up and down in your hand? Get one of those stress dolls where the eyeballs pop out and fidget with that?

Fidget spinners, I thought they looked like they might be kinda fun, but it's not something you're like, constantly using. It really is one of those "office toys" where it helps you bring on like a meditative state and keeps you focused because youre using both parts of your brain and consciousness, except you arent going "Ohmmmmmm" and being obnoxious.

This. This is what continues to grind on me like a glacier about the tumblr mentaltrenders. Actual mental illness and learning disabilities aren't cool or special. They fucking blow. They aren't like being left handed, or unusually tall. They are something about us that doesn't work properly. There is nothing about my life that would not be markedly better if I did not have major depressive disorder. It hasn't 'given' me anything. It only takes.

Time for the obligatory "Saturday Night Live just made fun of this trend" video post*:

*the previous one I had was the one for the sketch where Beck Bennett tricks Aidy Bryant, Vanessa Bayer, and Benedict Cumberbatch into appearing in a game show where Bennett tries to find out why Cumberbatch is considered "hot". I had trouble trying to upload the video on that one, so for anyone who cares, just look it up online)

The autistic kid in my first period has this one and likes to wear sunglasses indoors and spin it. He thinks it makes him look cool and dangerous, he once said and I quote "don't cross me. I could kill you with this in the blink of an eye."
You could probably put an eye out with that thing if you threw it hard enough.

I can't wait until these things go out of style in 12 minutes and then all the parents who blew like 50+ dollars on these things will be crying themselves to sleep at night knowing the next fad is just around the corner.
I was in line at a store and they had these things and they were charging 40 bucks for them because they had LEDs in them. I don't think that will help people concentrate I think that will just distract every child in a classroom

So I was in the mall and saw a kiosk for these things. But it was closing time and I didn't have a chance to see much. The spinners were behind glass. I'm sure many of them were overpriced plastic though. I can't fault the guy for getting in on the trend though. I remember when everyone was wearing those ugly ass Crocs and they had kiosks with charms you could stick in the holes. Then there was that Uggs trend with girls walking around in Uggs and patterned long socks in 80 degree weather because lulz trendy.

But at least Crocs and Uggs can be worn. They might be fug but they do serve a useful purpose.
