The Final Fantasy Thread

It's still a pre-rendered trailer. It has as much to do with what'll actually be in the game as the '06 trailer for Versus XIII FFXV.
I think that's a faulty comparison because VII's remake isn't going to be in development for 8 years and isn't just going to become XVI.

Oh man, Final Fantasy had such a huge effect on me growing up.

My first game in the series was the first game of the series, Final Fantasy for the NES. I got that game for Christmas one year and was allowed to play it for a grand total of one hour before we had to leave to visit family for Christmas dinner. That single hour was enough to hook me (even when I was ten, had no idea what a "roleplaying game" or what a character class was). I was drawn into the game so firmly that I took the manual with me. It had a walkthrough for the first half of the game in it because I guess the Japanese thought our puny American brains couldn't handle the game or whatever and I read every word of it to the point that by the time I was able to actually play the game the next day I felt like I had already been through it all.

I don't think I played very many games for my NES after I got that game. I was entranced by the world, the story, the character classes. Up until that point, I had never played a game where I could explore (relatively) freely. The fact that I could choose my own character classes was mindblowing for someone who had only played platformers and such up until that point. I played through it so many times that I could walk through Coneria, the first town, with my eyes closed.

Eventually the NES died. I had discovered emulation by then and was playing the later games in the series on my computer. They were fun: 5 is one of my top three in the series, 6 is just...godly. I wasn't a huge fan of 4 compared to some other people, but it was a fun game. The series got me interested in writing (my first "novel" was a novelization of Final Fantasy One's story. It was laughably, Wizzrobe-Bionicle-Doujinshi-level bad). It got me interested in reading when I discovered the fantasy genre.

My parents refused to buy me anymore consoles so it wasn't until I was in high school that I discovered the Playstation games.

I remember going to a friend's house and he had just gotten Final Fantasy VIII. He had basically just started the game and was roaming around Balamb Garden and the theme song played:

and I remember being blown away. It was so gorgeous. Everything from the painted backdrops to the music. The battles seemed alive (when all you had played were the sprite games, the 3d games were mind-blowing). I learned that the game had come out for PC and that was all I wanted for my birthday. My computer was a piece of shit and it took upwards of a minute to transition between screens but I didn't care. I still played it. Everything about that game was gorgeous and vibrant and alive. Looking back with a critical eye, I realize that it had a lot of issues. The characters were meh, the story was...weird, and the junctioning system was too easy to abuse, but I didn't care then and I still don't. You know the way everyone on the internet has been freaking out about the VII remake? If they announced an VIII remake, that would be my reaction.

I ended up getting my first job solely so I could save up for a PS2 and play the recently-released FF10. I found that one disappointing, but I ended up playing the others for the playstation and loving 9 and even 12 a little bit. I also played all of the other great playstation RPGs like Star Ocean 2, FF: Tactics, Disgaea, etc.

So yeah: Final Fantasy's had a huge influence on getting me into writing, into reading, and getting me interested in getting my first job.

If I had to rank my top five in the numerical series, it would be 9, 8, 5, 6, 1.

EDIT - Wow, I sperged there. Sorry.

Has Sephiroth ever experienced mirth? He's like angry all the time killing most of Shinra, burning down Nibelheim, and summoning a meteor.

He was pretty chill before he found out his mom is a space monster.

today i remembered what made me get into Final Fantasy back then and even found it on youtube!

it was this video here
i think it was in 2001 when my uncle showed it to me (i actually dont remember exactly if and it really left an impression on me and made me want to get IV.
sadly i only have played FF V and FFXIV, also mystic quest (which is actually a FF game, but its name was changed since Final Fantasy wasnt known in europe)
but i really want to get deeper into it. I kinda regret that i only played 2 games of that amazing franchise

I decided to start playing VI just the other day. It's an interesting change of style, having only ever played VII before. The controls are also the exact opposite of what they were for VII, so that will take some getting used to.

When Cloud put his dick in his ass, because they're like, gay for each other, according to yaoi fangirls.

Seriously, though, people bitched about not getting a remake of VII for so long that when it comes out, they'll bitch about how Square ruined it.

Cant believe FFIX is fifteen years old. I remember playing it five years ago in a state of playing VII, VIII, and this during the summer. I was immersed even more in this than the two other games. This thread now needs some FFIX music to celebrate.

I did the impossible. I got Tidus's weapon to it's full power. I finished that god fucking awful minigame and told that Chocobo lady to go fuck herself. I'm incredibly happy right now.

I've been with the series for quite a few years and played almost every title (except for the MMOs and spinoffs) and the one thing I want to say to people who might want to play a FF game is that you should formulate your own judgements and opinions on whether a you think a FF game is good or not and not listen to abysmal fanbase whine about which is the best/worst and influence you.

For a long time I avoided and looked down on FVII just becasue people said it ruined the series and that FFVI is the real masterpiece of the series and I believed them like an idiot, that was until I finally decided to actually play the game. While the game is dated and riddled with typos, I found myself really enjoying it and loving the atmosphere of Midgard along with the awesome music. This wasn't like my experience with FFVI and while I do think its a great game, I felt it was generic and no different from the past 2d titles in the series. The only real thing I felt FFVI had going for it besides the music, was Kefka and even then he's not as great of a villain as fans try to make him out to be.

It seems like a lot of the fanbase just praise or trash any of the games without even playing them just so they can try and sound cool for doing it and while there are objectionably bad FF games like FFXIII that you should avoid, at least try to make form your own opinions and not parrot what people say becasue you might not play a game that you might actually like but I guess this kind of advice goes for almost everything in life.

This is more so for FF than for any other series I can think of. Name any FF (other than maybe XIII) and you can find people who think it's the absolute best in the series, and other people who think it's the absolute worst (or second worst).

Playing XIII recently, and I feel like it's better than a lot of people give it credit for. Sure, the storyline is convoluted and the script needed a rewrite, but I'm enjoying it way more than I did when I first played it. It's not going to please all Final Fantasy fans, and it's true it's pretty damn linear, but I dunno. I like the game. I feel like it needed less cliches in it's script, some better character development, and actual towns to explore. In spite of it's flaws, I enjoy the game. I think knowing the full storyline and how everything fits together made me appreciate it a bit more.

For sure. XIII is far from being a perfect Final Fantasy game and most people will hate it no matter what you tell them, but none of the criticism it receives makes me enjoy it any less.

Decided to give X another chance and ordered the HD version online since I no longer have a working PS2.

Looking forward to playing it again.

I've been playing the X HD version since the beginning of the year. It's a lot better this time through. There's still several clues that this was originally an early PS2 game, chief being no camera control on the right stick. Great graphics though, especially in the water effects.

The visuals look great. You could tell that they spent a lot of time reworking everything, even the character models look better. The reworked music is just good as the original. Oh, and one more thing, beware of going anywhere after you get to go everywhere. Superbosses appears and some happens to block some of the post game content, so keep this in mind.
