The Final Fantasy Thread

I'm started to get a bit more excited for FFXV. Hearing more information showed me that Square has some sort of focus on what they want to with that game, which is good. I really should have preordered Type 0 for the demo back then, damn.

I hate FFXIII. But the thing is, I realized something about it, about maybe 4 or so hours into my playing it.

"I should not know more about Lightning from
Dissidia: Duodecim than I do from the game in which she allegedly stars."

And that's when it hit me: One of the most critical failings of FFXIII is actually its writing. In Duodecim, I know very little about Lightning, but stripped of her memories and placed alongside other FF characters, she really starts to shine and become sympathetic, outwardly a cold, mission-oriented soldier and inwardly being more friendly with those she trusts. There's a really good scene wherein she finds Firion's rose and gives it back to him that holds about 25% more meaning than the entire first half of FFXIII, and that's something that I genuinely don't know how the hell happened.

As for FF games? I'm a fan, but my choices are a bit odd compared to some of the others. FF1 is great, in spite of basically being an attempt to clone D&D (I could explain how much content FF1 steals from early D&D, but suffice to say, it's shitloads). I like FF2 despite it having the worst level-up system in the history of human endeavor. I enjoy FFMQ for what it is. FF4 and FF6 will always hold special places in my heart because HOLY SHIT.

I think my favorite's genuinely FF7, not so much for its own inherent quality (its writing isn't bad, but it suffers deeply for poor translation), but because I genuinely identified with Cloud; it's kind of hard to not appreciate a hero who's been through so much shit that he's genuinely fucked his own mental state inside-out.

XIII has a really complex backstory that's not handled too delicately. I had no idea wtf was going on, where I was, or anything until I read up on some of the backstory and familiarized myself with a lot of the terminology. The script is also a mess. Characters repeat the same shit over and over again until there comes a point where you're shouting "Get on with it!" at the screen.

The sequels are somewhat better in script but the story just becomes overly complex and confusing. By Lightning Returns, if you're not invested in the story, you won't be interested in finishing it. I'll give Lightning Returns credit in being much more straightforward and easier to understand than the other two, though. It also has a better script, and the characters shine a bit more than they did in previous games. It's also way more fun when you get the hang of it and can easily become addicting. Lightning is all image, though. She's there to look cool and kick ass and while her story is an interesting one in XIII-2 and LR (and some of XIII), it doesn't go very deep. I think Square only focused on her so much because of her image.

Sorry if this is seen as a dumb question or whatnot, but I started playing Final Fantasy VI recently and I couldn't help but ask: "Why is Terra's hair green in-game but blonde in the opening?"

Assuming you're watching the anthology opening, her hair IS actually green. Well, green-ISH. It's a yellow-green, but it's still much more green looking than the other characters who are blonde.

She does look blonde in a lot of the shots, but it's due to harsh bright yellow lighting from being inside the magitek facility, etc. When she's in lower light areas, or when she's in shadow, you can see the green tint on her hair a lot better.

I'm just playing the stand-alone PS version, but it does have the same opening. I can kind of see where you're coming from, but it's still a much more blonde-looking shade of green than we see in game.

I will say that I did like the opening cutscene a lot; it really got me interested in the game's setting and made me want to get playing.

They probably made her a lot more blonde in the cutscenes just to keep her closer to the way Amano depicts her, because his depiction of her is actually pretty iconic from what I can tell.

The PS version isn't bad if it works for you, (and I agree those cutscenes are awesome) but that version also has the original SNES translation, as well as those loading times. If that version doesn't work for you I'd highly recommend checking out the Gameboy Advance version. It has a better translation, better graphics, even has extra content (more espers, an extra dungeon, etc). And if you hate handhelds, you could always get an emulator.

I took a quick look at his drawings; she certainly looks more blonde-haired than green-haired. Also, I must say I like his style.

Is the SNES translation that bad? I've heard people complain about the Final Fantasy VII translation, but I honestly had no problem with it. I still played a good game with an interesting story and memorable characters, even if there's probably a translation-induced plot-hole somewhere. As for the loading times, it is a little annoying having to wait to bring up the menu, but it's not enough much of an issue to make me not want to play it.

In any case, the PS version is the version that I paid for, so I might as well go through with it. I don't even have a GBA, so that version's out of the question as it is.

If the translation and loading times aren't bothering you, you're fine where you are. Honestly, the game is great even with the imperfect Woolsey translation we all grew up with, it's just that the GBA translation is better and more accurate to the original Japanese, and it makes some things less confusing.

I think my favourite FF's are V and IX...

Do you guys consider Bravely Default to be an FF game? I mean, it takes place in the 4 Heroes of Light universe...maybe.

Though I didn't like 4 Heroes that much.

4 Heroes kind of fell flat, yeah. I feel like Bravely Default is more like a Final Fantasy spinoff that just so happens to be very close to what the older games were about while also bringing a new feel to it.

I'm just posting to add that, like most Final Fantasy fans that have been with the series since before the Playstation versions came out, VI is easily the best game in the series for me. I've played through it at least 5 times. The ability to change party members through most of the game, and the optional characters make this one a real fucking winner. Having to constantly re-equip espers over and over to get level up stats from unusable or weak ones does suck though.

It's kind of hard to decide which of the main series ones (sans online ones) I like least I mean, there's none of them I hate- no, not even XIII.

I mean, they all have good/bad points.

Anyway, off-topic does anyone hope Explorers gets localised? It looks ok.

What the what. Apparently Type-0 HD is going to be released on Steam next month. Seems like Square is really starting to get into PCs as a viable platform for Final Fantasy games.

Between this, the FF7/8 and 13 releases, could I possibly be able to play a current gen Final Fantasy game on release (15) on my gaming platform of choice? Please Square?

The Type-0 game that's on steam any good? I know the ratings on it are listed as Mixed, but I can't find anything critically wrong about it in the reviews save for the fact that it's 30 fps frame locked (which doesn't bug me). I suppose I should take that as a hint but I was hoping someone here has it and has played it.

If you're comparing it to the last few games, it holds up a lot better, but that's saying very little.

Putting aside frame rates, the game's absolutely hideous. It's a PSP port, granted, but even with the punch-up it actually looks a lot worse than FFXII, which came out a decade ago. The English voice acting is absolutely hideous, the dialogue couldn't be saved by Ben Kingsley with a million dollar bill in his pockets, and the core crux of the game's plot is about amnesia and it only goes downhill from there.

I guess that'd still put it above Tales of the Abyss, which has a plot about both amnesia and evil twins. But if you still wanna buy it anyway, buy it cheap, and keep expectations low.

It's stupid for plot reasons damnit!
And they're actually clones.

I want to replay FFT but I know I'll get grinding and the first monster encounter will flatten me.

Anyone have a favourite class overall? Not in FFT alone, just the series.
I've always liked Red Mages.
