The Final Fantasy Thread

Got a lot of people in the comments of that video complaining about the fact that they took out the turn based system.

I can't say I'm a big fan of some of the voice acting. Kind of hoping there's an option for Japanese with subtitles. At least then, if the acting's bad, I can't tell.

I hadn't seen anything of the remake, but that has got me so hyped now. Cloud is going to look so pretty in his dress.

Yeah, by FF purists who haven't accepted that the industry changed and we have the capability to remake a classic into something more. It looks like FFXV's combat which is inspired by Kingdom Heart's combat but with much more finesse, and they flushed out the mechanics that SE learned of that didn't work or were not fun. I welcome the change.

Whoa, revamped Jesse, Biggs and Wedge!

...Why am I hyped for totally the wrong thing?

Without AVALANCHE there would be no Final fantasy 7. I like the look of the Shinra MPs too. I can't wait to see Midgar in all its slummy glory.

Oh.
MY GOD.
I'm so fucking hyped.
I just hope they do justice to the soundtrack, it's one of my top 5 video game OSTs.
It seems like the writing will be a lot better too, so hopefully the characters will have a lot more depth and personality than they did before (which some already had, arguably, but people like Yuffie and Tifa were kind of on the 'ehh' side for me...).

Most of the characters are pretty shallow outside of their token one part of the story they're allowed to say and do things. Like when Barret goes to North Corel he's allowed to talk, or when Red XIII is in Cosmo Canyon. Ideally they'd use some of that fancy processing power to have more party interplay rather than their formula of Cloud and [the character whose town we are in] talking about [backstory thing] while character three stands quietly to the side but... Square, you know?

Maybe they'll use the XV character interaction stuff for the remake too.

This could be good or bad. Either they're going to split the main game into multiple parts (horrible idea) or also remaking Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus (great idea). There's a lot more to the story of FF7, it'd be nice if they used this opportunity to tell the whole story rather than just the middle part.

I'd be down for a remake of Dirge of Cerberus (because I actually liked that game ) but I would kill for a Crisis Core remake, or for Crisis Core's flashbacks to be organically worked into portions of the game where you play as Zack.

I never played any of the spinoffs.

I wouldn't mind them being released later on as DLC if there's enough demand for it.

...unrelated note, anyone else gonna grab Explorers? Did I already ask?

Is there official word that they're going to do this? I assumed from the video that they are going to keep the turn based gameplay.

Well, from developer interviews, it seems like the official word is that it's going to be somewhat more action based than the original was, but they're maintaining that the turn based elements aren't being completely cut out, whatever that means.

I do kind of understand the multiple release thing, because this time rather than throwing together a bunch of pre-rendered backgrounds, they have to flesh out the whole world, meaning that they have to take those backgrounds and not only remake them to be more fleshed out and detailed, but they have to build them so that you can view the scene from all angles. This alone can easily multiply the amount of work that needs to be done, because you not only have to render what's in the scene, but you have to render things in the distance that you maybe can't go to. Landscapes, buildings in the distance, things like that.

At the same time, though, I'm a little worried that they're going to try to change the game too much. They've said already that they're going to be expanding on the content in the game, and I don't know how well that's going to work out. So far their attitude has been that if you liked the original game's mechanics and story better, that the modern re-release of the original FFVII should be sufficient, and I don't know if that's the right attitude to have here.

We'll have to wait and see what happens though.

If you want to play the same game over again, just play it. It's out for just about ever console imaginable and PC.

I'm glad they're trying something new. Might make me more likely to buy it (as I've always thought the original was somewhat meh.)
