The Final Fantasy Thread

It's stupid for plot reasons damnit!
And they're actually clones.

I want to replay FFT but I know I'll get grinding and the first monster encounter will flatten me.

Anyone have a favourite class overall? Not in FFT alone, just the series.
I've always liked Red Mages.

Red Mage was my favorite from the beginning. It was so stylish: feathered cap, cloak, etc. Probably tied with the White Mage for favorite: In every RPG-style game I've ever played, I always end up being a support/healer/backbone character. When I played WoW, I healed. TF2, Engineer, etc. I like the role of buffer/support character.

It also helped that I used to have a white mage hoodie.

A White Mage hoodie sounds awesome to my shrivelled fanboy ish brain.

I'm not sure WHY I like Red Mages, the optimiser in me thinks they're inefficient but...

I don't know what it is, but I've always loved black mages. It's satisfying nuking enemies with fire or thunder attacks. Particularly in Tactics where it takes time to charge up the spells and you're able to hit a group before they act.

Also helps that my favorite character in the series is a black mage.

Yeah, actually catching people in spells is amazing. My favourite spell for damage is Flare. I mean comets are cool but they don't explode enough,

Or Hadouken, but that siphons love from existence.

Is your favourite Vivi? Or is the character more belt-related?

It's Vivi.

Lulu's alright too I guess.

Other than those two it's more vague as to who the Black Mages are.

Rydia might count, as a little girl at least, and you could argue Celes/Terra but they get white magic too.

Bumping this thread just for FFV awareness. Square-Enix has pretty much quarter-assed FFV's new release. Finally FFV gets a remake available on PC and then it's mostly shit. The gameplay's fine, but they've completely fucked up the graphics by using new tiles still based on the original SNES systems.

Those have been the official FFV sprites for a while. They use them in other media exclusively. For example, the "Monk (FFV)" card from the mobile version of Triple Triad is definitely Galuf.

The SD chibis have been around forever, yes, and they've done them for just about every NES, and SNES Final Fantasy game, but these sprites are not them. They look nothing like them, the proportions are way off and they don't look at all appealing. Not only that, the graphics styles clash, especially against that semi-photorealistic looking meteorite, and you can see the tiling everywhere. It's ridiculous.

You should only see that kind of clashing in crappy comics like the ones I make.

It's not the sprites I have an issue with, it's the fact that they didn't update the tilesets to work with 1080p upscaling.

$15.

It's one thing to change the sprites, even changing them into chibi sprites, but those designs are just so toothless and sterile. What paste eaters at Square's art or production department thought those vector graphics looked good?

"Look at what Square did to Cloud. Cloud doesn't look like a human being. He's supposed to be hydrocephalic with gigantic squid eyes and popeye arms. WAY TO RUIN FF7 SQUARE!"

If you're going to attempt to emulate the art direction of the original version, then do it. The proportions for the characters in the latest FFV remake are significantly off from the original art while still attempting to be it. FFVII has taken its own direction and has established its own gritty visual style for itself, while FFV is pretty light and colorful considering it's probably one of the most light-hearted entries in the series. While, yeah, the color of the sprites are good, the backgrounds are too toned-down in comparison, not to mention there's also considerable issues with the HD tiles, and the game has no Vsync so when the image pans across it tears like crazy. FFV is a terrible port, and unless Squeenix fixes it, it's not worth $15.

Is there anything new gameplay-wise that wasn't in the GBA version?

They've been working on it a lot longer than people think. One of the producers did an interview in 2007 and said a remake would happen in 2017 for the twentieth anniversary "if it were to happen".
That just makes it all the more impressive how long they kept this under wraps.
