The Final Fantasy Thread

SE's April Fools prank:
The game's fake but I suppose it's foreshadowing new FFXIV content.
 
The fact that so many people fail to understand this baffles me.

Also fuck that, I'm still gonna say 'tie-dus.' I've been pronouncing it like that for years now and I'm not about to stop.

Me either. They just should have let it go as what most people thought it was. I still refuse to pronounce Arceus right because then the spelling is stupid. Should have just called him Arkeus. Looks cooler that way anyway.
 
FOUR JOB FIESTA FUN TIMES

I figured I'd jump onto that train this year with interesting results. First run was on normal settings (i.e. every time you reach a crystal, you get a job associated with that crystal) and despite my party comp having the consistency of tissue paper (Black Mage/Summoner/Ranger/Dancer) I somehow beat the game regardless (thanks to one part of Exdeath not being immune to Petrify of all things).

Then I decided to be a little more risque. Chaos run it is. First job is Samurai, which seemed to counterbalance my problems with the first party from the getgo, and getting on with four Freelancers is managable (if you remember to break rods and buy all the potions). Then came Geomancer, so more Freelancer time. Still managable, but I felt the need for being able to pick jobs more and more.

Then Fire Crystal comes and goes... and Gilgabot rolls me Dragoon. Another Earth job.

Now, this wouldn't be too bad, but there's a problem. The first big boss after the Fire Crystal is Ifrit, and Geomancers basically only have two options going into that fight: use their normal attack, which given their mage nature isn't too strong... or use their Gaia ability, which in Ifrit's room casts Ignus Fantus. Which is a Fire ability. On Ifrit. Theoretically you could still beat him with it, but that's only thanks to it somehow confusing Ifrit and getting him to hit himself, but more often than not he'll cast Fire spells on himself, which just means more HP for me to smack through.

Time for a grinding break, I guess!
 
Got a beta code for Dissidia NT. I have yet to actually play against people (I'm running two practice matches per each of the 14 characters in the beta and I've made it halfway through as of tonight) and as someone who put like 700+ hours cumulatively into the PSP games this is everything I ever wanted. It plays in 60 FPS, loads decently quick, every character is unique and feels useful, the stages and summons are awesome, and you know what one of my favorite features is?

Damage models. More than just scrapes and bruises, some characters also get minor costume changes. The biggest one that comes to mind is Warrior of Light, when he gets damaged enough one of his horns on his helmet break off. It's the little things that make me happy. I am definitely preordering this.
 
I have to admit, Final Fantasy XV is my favorite one.

VII and VIII were good too, X was meh, and I have yet to play the others, although I fully intend to (excluding XI and XIV as I do not play MMO's)

The upcoming Assassin's Creed festival DLC for XV looks pretty interesting, plus it's free. Wonder what they've got planned for Episode Ignis.
 
At the risk of sounding like a really stodgy nostalgia fag, I liked the older games, or at least the ones that told more fantasy oriented stories that focused on the plot as opposed to the delivery of said plot.

For instance, let's compare Final Fantasy VI to Final Fantasy XIII: Both had epic plots with world affecting consequences, but the former focused more on laying out the narrative while the latter focused more on trying to deliver the narrative with style while sacrificing it's coherence.

I was HOOKED on FFVI because the plot was easy to follow while still filled with all sorts of interesting complexity. FFXIII bamboozled me with tons of complexity that was hard to follow right out the gate and thus it was hard for me to follow.

By the end of the first few major plot arcs of FFVI, I wasn't lost and eager to see where they went with it. With FFXIII, I finished the first major plot arcs, was still confused as to most of the details, and was really hard pressed to continue following a plot I still didn't grasp very well.

Haven't played FFXV, so I won't pass judgement on it, but I will say I really hated the games where they focused more on presentation of the plot as opposed to making it easy to follow said plot.

I liked VI because there was no real protagonist in the game... some people say it's either Locke or Terra but you can beat the game without getting either in your party after the world ends. Cloud, Squall, Tidus, and Vaan were all kinda insufferable compared to the more likeable side characters (Cid/Barrett, Auron, Balthier, etc)

From what I heard Vaan wasn't supposed to be the original protagonist of 12, Basch was. But you can't have a Final Fantasy without a young twink as the main character. I did like the weird storytelling where the main character is just kind of hanging on to this plot that has so little to do with them.

I also liked the World of FF 15 just because how subdued it is. I love that its just the modern world with some fantasy elements tossed in.
 
Speaking of autism, did anyone else ever watch Spirits Within? I thought it wasn't as bad as something which nearly tanked Squaresoft and led to the merger should be....it was a bad idea though.

Then again I was like, 10 so it might actually be cancer.

They kinda made you appreciate the other cast more. Auron was also a really good "guardian" figure for Tidus. I liked Cloud towards the beginning of FFVII though, he wasn't a whiny emo like he always is in literally all media associated with it. His personality was a fake one constructed both of his own and Zack's, so he had all these cool one-liners and he was so above-it-all in a really arrogant but likable way. It wasn't until he learned everything about him was a lie that he turns into a whiny emo fag, which is true to his original character.

The point of this though is that Zack was just better than Cloud.
