The Final Fantasy Thread

Shame we won't see anymore DLC for XV.

As my first FF game, XV is my favorite in the series. That being said, I can't wait to try out the other games, particularly the first and seventh games.

Final Fantasy 8 was dumb as fuck

and I loved it.

It had everything, right from the very beginning teenage soldiers in training were storming Normandy Beach and getting gunned down.

The principal of the Mercenary school gives you a magic lamp with Satan inside of it.

More emo crooning than a Smiths song.

Zell's jorts.

Botched political assassination.

This game was fucking horrible and somehow the best Final Fantasy game of all time.

I watched an LP of VIII and I enjoyed it for the most part.

The gameplay was kind of a clusterfuck, but I appreciate Square trying something different for that game. I also kinda like the setting and some of Uematsu's best stuff is from that game.

Losing Episode Aranea has me saltier than Lot's wife. I'd have traded all of Kingsglaive to let me play as a badass dragoon mercenary girl. Why do you hurt me, Squeenix? I just want to love you.

Wouldn't Episode Noctis basically be the main campaign?

From how I understood it, it was going to be an alternative path sort of thing (like Verse 2) but not canon. It was supposed to be the last DLC released, so maybe? I doubt they got anywhere far in developing it though.

They should make a Cindy DLC with tons of sex scenes not like Mass Effect ones but actual porn. They could replace the fighting with fucking and as you gain experience you get better at different techniques and positions. They could replace the armor with different types of thongs and lingerie and replace the weapons with sex toys like dildos and vibrators as well as using Viagra and horny goat weed as potions. They could even have a minigame where you run a brothel out of Cid's gas station.

I'd play that.

I first started playing Final Fantasy in 2014 when I played through Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 over the course of 2 weeks. I was enthralled, and as I recently bought a PS4, I bought the X re-release and loved it to death. It took a few years to get through, and I probably finished it during early 2016. Since then, I've played the first three Final Fantasies, and have just started playing IV.

Of the one's I've played, 10 is probably my favourite. I love the characters, especially Auron, Tidus, and Yuna. Rikku is a babe, and Wakka should fucking die. I really do think Tidus gets a bad rap character wise, most of the problems stem from trying to match the English script up with the Japanese mouth movements. It's why Auron is the best, you rarely see his mouth. Anyway, he's a celebrity who has to have hardship for the first time in his life. He starts a little whiny but becomes mature while still fun at the end. Him and Yuna are also quite cute together. I couldn't be bothered to play Blitzball, nor could I manage to dodge even 2 consecutive thunderbolts but apart from that I gave the gave as much effort as I could. The thing I love the most is probably the world. The sendings, the summons being summoners themselves, Kilika Island, Makalania Woods, Home. Everywhere feels special to me and traveling back to farm monsters and get ultimate weapons was something I loved not dreaded. The main story was however probably a bit easy, I never had to grind and died like 3-4 times total, except for maybe inside Sin. The turn system is broken once Tidus learns haste and slow, when Rikku joins you can steal and mix to do ridiculous damage, and I'm sure Khimari would be awesome if I ever used him. Overall a very solid 9/10

FFI was quite fun though very basic. I played the GBA release which I am aware is easy mode so needless to say I thought it lacked a bit of challenge. My party was A Warrior, WMage, BMage, and Monk, and for my next playthough (which will be the PS1 version), I will be doing Theif, RMage, RMage, Monk, to make it even more fun. Once again, I really like the world, with the ice caves, river rafting, blocked off continents, it coupled with the overworld music felt like a grand adventure. I most remember the early game, but the under water temple, and the sudden encounter with War Machine on the bridge are stand out moments for late game me. Despite having literally no character, I became attached to my party. Especially my Monk, so I use that class whenever possible.

FFII was jank but in a fun way. I must have given up at least twice in the end game due to the stupid amount of times I was hit by petrifying spells resulting in a TPK in one turn. Due to the flexibility, I made Guy a paladin type, strong attack strong white magic, Maria was my Black Mage, Firion just attacked and Leon left no impression due to only being playable at the end. My favourite guest was Josef, followed by Leila and Ricard. Monks are my favourite, and the latter two are just awesome. I liked how it actually had a story unlike I, and I also liked the little missions you do, it feels less like a quest and more like you actually work for a resistance. The Emperor was great, and I can't think of anything more hype then when he summons the Behemoth and then you have to fight your way out through the sewers. I can't remember the late game bosses but the address stick with me. The blue walls of Pandemonium, the fleshy whale thingy, that castle with nothing but petrify spells. All of it was charming. The music is probably my favourite in the series so far, I love the overworld, the battle theme, and the Magician's Tower. The Rebellion Theme is also a banger. I love levelling up spells through using them and wish there was something like that in another game, in fact, I love the whole level up system including the exploit, I spent a lot of the early game grinding BMagic and Cure by constant group casting on the party. It would probably be better without group attacking though. In short this would be my favourite of the games if enemies would stop appearing in hordes of 10 and petrify my entire party with stupidly accurate break spells. No way I'm playing the bonus campaign though. Fucking grinding for hours.

FFIII I'm not the biggest fan of. It's kind of the middle ground of II. More flexibility with the party system and an attempt at a story, but more sensible level ups and a more basic plot. As such, it fails to really intrigue me. The Onion Knights don't have enough personality to be fun, but too much to project onto, the story really drags as with all the ways the world changes I never felt like I was exploring or could get into trouble if I made a wrong move. Due to DS limitations, they gave every enemy a stupid amount of HP which especially hurts at the end of the game where you need to get a few levels to stand a chance against CoD but can't save at all in The dark world leading to multiple losses of hours, something that usually only happens when I get too cocky and forget or decide I don't need to save. Still, it does have some neat bosses especially in the dark world and the area before and I love the Job System, can't wait until I play 5 and get to experience it again

I have a few basic thoughts on IV as I've only really just started. I should mention I'm playing the DS version. I'm about to storm Barron and I'm wondering where the rest of the plot will come from, given I'm 8 hours in. I feel the game has legit difficulty, the bosses you have to think about to dodge counters and the like, the ATB keeps you on your toes, and I died three-4 times of Scarmiglione who was so much fun to work out how to beat. I'm not the biggest fan of the three dimensional models but it looks moderately better than 3 did. The voice acting is pretty funny at times. I'm finding it hard to become attached to any of the characters as my party members keep swapping out at a rapid pace. Rydia was nice though under utilised as a summoner, I'm guess she'll do more later, I liked Edward before he left, lot of good story there. Kaine seemed cool before he was clearly brain washed. I'm loving Yang because monk, I can't say I get much character from him though apart from wanting to protect his kingdom and friends. Tellah is a lot of fun though his recall mechanic is now useless. Pallom and Porom could be good but once again I'm not getting much from them. The antlion quest was fun though I think the game should have made more use of the desert. Cecil seems a bit angsty for my tastes.

Edit: I would have liked the level editor for FFXV. The modding community could have had a lot of fun with it. Who knows what we could have gotten

The English trailer for Patch 4.5 of FFXIV (does that have its own thread somewhere?) was released today and it has me very hyped for the last Ivalice raid and what looks like a really crazy climax in the main story.

It's actually quite funny how many people are ditching WoW in favor of XIV. Both games have terrible droughts and downtime, but I will agree that there's a lot more to "do" in XIV; ie. level your ass off and spam-unlock any blue + quest.

Anyway, seemingly blue mage is coming out within 48 hours as some sort of solo mini-game "limited" class. I'm assuming you solo run dungeons and specific 1v1 boss job quests to unlock some of your abilities, as per usual.

Can't imagine it's a hell of a time for more than a few days, but on top of that they said they'd add like 4 jobs in Shadowbringers, one of being gunblades. Honestly I'm just looking forward to a new healer and hopefully an xp pre-order item like in Stormblood, because those fucking kikes still haven't made it possible to get those earrings again since.

That said, I've had a hard time enjoying any FF game but 15 and X-2, but the cast of FF4 appeals to me. None of the cast screams "I'm a fucking kid" nor do they seem like all-knowing Sasuke-types. Really oughta push progress into it.

XIV and WoW have their problems but as of right now they are insanely far apart in terms of where they are and where they are going.

XIV is in a good place and looks to be going to be a much better place via the upcoming expansion.

WoW is in a horrible place with the expansion and only looks to be getting worse. It seems as if they're still a few months out from getting the game back to a state that would be comparable to how it was a few years back.

I could (and was going to) write a huge effort post, but the short version is both games have some jank based on how old they are - but WoWs are much less forgivable and are rooted in an inability to understand what fun is and laziness.

XIV and WoW have their appeal for different people, XIV seems to be more casual friendly and WoW is for the hardcore. It isn't looking good for WoW and its old engine, an inexperienced and incompetent dev team, and the suits in charge willing to cut costs. I might migrate to XIV if the game gets really bad.

V was my favorite FF and FFX-2 could be up there if it had challenge while VIII was the worst despite having the best mini-game, waifus and setting, but it had shitty gameplay and story. II is down there as well but it gets away with because it's old. VII hasn't aged well and desperately needs a real remake and not the crap they had shown. III was the most difficult and IV had the best story.

XIV is growing it's audience while WoW is rapidly shrinking it, though. Raiding in XIV is pretty good, the main thing it lacks compared to WoW is focued PVP (battlegrounds and arenas) although I've never thought WoW's PVP was "excellent".

I'd also go so far to say that XIV has the far-jankier engine and WoW's large problems aren't tied to the engine, they're tied to the fact the development team can't think of anything creative to do in the game anymore. A few creative things they've done they abandoned in previous expansions and can't think of a clever way to bring them back; or have brought them back too many times to even try it again.

I heard lots of good things about XIV that I might have to try it. The art direction helps too.

I hate to sounds like I'm doing an FFXIV commercial but it's also free to play until level 35 on all classes.

You can just play it right now.

Packed with people waiting for BLU. Still no idea how the hell it'll level; surely the boss fights are job quests but what for the rest? Grind FATEs?

WoW will be superior until I can suggest XIV to all types of their players and that'll simply never be the case. I didn't grow up with FF since blocks of text isn't really fit for a non-English speaking 'Spam A til you progress' kid, so I'm playing catch up, and that tiny sliver of hope that FF will chime well with me in the future is half the reason XIV is appealing.

I mean fuck sake, it's still called XIV and not 'FF: Online' or something. How are you meant to advertise it to friends as not just being dead when they make a new mmo with FF18, if all their knowledge of the franchise is that one series that keeps shitting out games.

It was sheer luck I gave it a chance myself, and I hit 200 hours played before I even reached SB's MQ, and yea, I do regret not following the story, but considering everyone tells new people to do so, surely they regret not doing it themselves, which means it's a common game design issue.

What appeals to WoW players over ESO or GW2 is the weight of characters and spells feeling just right, and XIV skips that apex as damage and actions are a second delayed. It's charming now, sure, and make healing a lot more fun since your aoe isn't just "most efficient" but a viable choice of healing, but I still can't use Rescue if not already being where I want to pull them: If I have to run, so do they, basically. It doesn't lend well to big plays, granted I'm playing cross the ocean which doesn't feel different from when I didn't.

Overall it's a good game but I can already recognize the issues end-game WoW has in the future when I've maxed a few more jobs. Hopefully meme shit like BLU will keep it at bay. Also gunblades.

Interesting developments. Updated ToS.

"Harassment" means speech and/or behaviour that inflicts deep emotional distress on another person. It is an extremely serious violation. Where Square Enix determines that harassment has occurred, a penalty equal to or higher than "Temporary Service Account Suspension" may be imposed.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of behaviour that could constitute harassment in Final Fantasy XIV:

・Discriminatory expressions based on race/nationality/thinking/gender/sexual orientation/gender identity
・Discriminatory expressions about a state/religion/occupation/organisation, etc.
・Obscene/indecent expressions
・Actions that inflict emotional distress using content related to historical events or crimes
・Stalking
・Disclosing or indicating personal information such as contact details with the aim of meeting up in the real world
・Disclosing or indicating another person's real world personal information without permission
・Other actions that are generally regarded as actions that inflict deep emotional distress on another person

These are prohibited in all places where expressions can be made, including chat (including Quick Chat and Emote), markers, comments and names. With regard to character names, if a phrase equating to harassment is formed within the full name, this is also regarded as harassment. In the case of a group action, all of the members involved will be subject to penalties.

There may be other types of harassment that do not fit into any of the categories described above. Square Enix may determine that conduct constitutes harassment, even if such conduct is not expressly prohibited herein.

"Offensive expression" means an expression in general that inflicts emotional distress by being offensive to another person. Offensive expression may include:

・Aggressive expressions such as violent language/slander/insult/threat.
・Expressions that provoke or belittle another person, such as excessive criticism, negation/ridicule
・Expressions that significantly lack consideration for another person
・Expressions that unilaterally reject another person's opinion
・Expressions that any reasonable person would find offensive
・Expressions that compel a playing style
・Expressions that attempt to unilaterally exclude someone from the game or content/community, etc.
(Except when in accordance with rules set by an administrator such as a Free Company Master)
・Expressions that contravene public order and morals
・Other expressions that are offensive to another person

Offensive expressions are prohibited in all places where expressions can be made in Final Fantasy XIV, including chat (including Quick Chat and Emote), markers, comments and names. Use of an offensive expression in the form of a character name is also regarded as nuisance behaviour.
