Of the one's I've played, 10 is probably my favourite. I love the characters, especially Auron, Tidus, and Yuna. Rikku is a babe, and Wakka should fucking die. I really do think Tidus gets a bad rap character wise, most of the problems stem from trying to match the English script up with the Japanese mouth movements. It's why Auron is the best, you rarely see his mouth. Anyway, he's a celebrity who has to have hardship for the first time in his life. He starts a little whiny but becomes mature while still fun at the end. Him and Yuna are also quite cute together. I couldn't be bothered to play Blitzball, nor could I manage to dodge even 2 consecutive thunderbolts but apart from that I gave the gave as much effort as I could. The thing I love the most is probably the world. The sendings, the summons being summoners themselves, Kilika Island, Makalania Woods, Home. Everywhere feels special to me and traveling back to farm monsters and get ultimate weapons was something I loved not dreaded. The main story was however probably a bit easy, I never had to grind and died like 3-4 times total, except for maybe inside Sin. The turn system is broken once Tidus learns haste and slow, when Rikku joins you can steal and mix to do ridiculous damage, and I'm sure Khimari would be awesome if I ever used him. Overall a very solid 9/10
FFI was quite fun though very basic. I played the GBA release which I am aware is easy mode so needless to say I thought it lacked a bit of challenge. My party was A Warrior, WMage, BMage, and Monk, and for my next playthough (which will be the PS1 version), I will be doing Theif, RMage, RMage, Monk, to make it even more fun. Once again, I really like the world, with the ice caves, river rafting, blocked off continents, it coupled with the overworld music felt like a grand adventure. I most remember the early game, but the under water temple, and the sudden encounter with War Machine on the bridge are stand out moments for late game me. Despite having literally no character, I became attached to my party. Especially my Monk, so I use that class whenever possible.
FFII was jank but in a fun way. I must have given up at least twice in the end game due to the stupid amount of times I was hit by petrifying spells resulting in a TPK in one turn. Due to the flexibility, I made Guy a paladin type, strong attack strong white magic, Maria was my Black Mage, Firion just attacked and Leon left no impression due to only being playable at the end. My favourite guest was Josef, followed by Leila and Ricard. Monks are my favourite, and the latter two are just awesome. I liked how it actually had a story unlike I, and I also liked the little missions you do, it feels less like a quest and more like you actually work for a resistance. The Emperor was great, and I can't think of anything more hype then when he summons the Behemoth and then you have to fight your way out through the sewers. I can't remember the late game bosses but the address stick with me. The blue walls of Pandemonium, the fleshy whale thingy, that castle with nothing but petrify spells. All of it was charming. The music is probably my favourite in the series so far, I love the overworld, the battle theme, and the Magician's Tower. The Rebellion Theme is also a banger. I love levelling up spells through using them and wish there was something like that in another game, in fact, I love the whole level up system including the exploit, I spent a lot of the early game grinding BMagic and Cure by constant group casting on the party. It would probably be better without group attacking though. In short this would be my favourite of the games if enemies would stop appearing in hordes of 10 and petrify my entire party with stupidly accurate break spells. No way I'm playing the bonus campaign though. Fucking grinding for hours.
FFIII I'm not the biggest fan of. It's kind of the middle ground of II. More flexibility with the party system and an attempt at a story, but more sensible level ups and a more basic plot. As such, it fails to really intrigue me. The Onion Knights don't have enough personality to be fun, but too much to project onto, the story really drags as with all the ways the world changes I never felt like I was exploring or could get into trouble if I made a wrong move. Due to DS limitations, they gave every enemy a stupid amount of HP which especially hurts at the end of the game where you need to get a few levels to stand a chance against CoD but can't save at all in The dark world leading to multiple losses of hours, something that usually only happens when I get too cocky and forget or decide I don't need to save. Still, it does have some neat bosses especially in the dark world and the area before and I love the Job System, can't wait until I play 5 and get to experience it again
I have a few basic thoughts on IV as I've only really just started. I should mention I'm playing the DS version. I'm about to storm Barron and I'm wondering where the rest of the plot will come from, given I'm 8 hours in. I feel the game has legit difficulty, the bosses you have to think about to dodge counters and the like, the ATB keeps you on your toes, and I died three-4 times of Scarmiglione who was so much fun to work out how to beat. I'm not the biggest fan of the three dimensional models but it looks moderately better than 3 did. The voice acting is pretty funny at times. I'm finding it hard to become attached to any of the characters as my party members keep swapping out at a rapid pace. Rydia was nice though under utilised as a summoner, I'm guess she'll do more later, I liked Edward before he left, lot of good story there. Kaine seemed cool before he was clearly brain washed. I'm loving Yang because monk, I can't say I get much character from him though apart from wanting to protect his kingdom and friends. Tellah is a lot of fun though his recall mechanic is now useless. Pallom and Porom could be good but once again I'm not getting much from them. The antlion quest was fun though I think the game should have made more use of the desert. Cecil seems a bit angsty for my tastes.
