I didn't really play FF7 as a kid, although my uncle did.
So there is some nostalgia for VII but it's not that big of a deal for me like it is for other folks out there.
I had played a few Final Fantasy games on and off and here and there, but I didn't truly get into the series until Final Fantasy XV.
However, I am very excited about the remake of Final Fantasy VII despite the complaints.
Yes, Square Enix is dragging their ass on the remake, just like they did with Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III.
I haven't played Kingdom Hearts III so I can't really judge it, but I loved Final Fantasy XV and considered it well worth the wait despite any flaws it had (I still wish we could've got more DLC's for it)
Final Fantasy VII was the game that put Final Fantasy on the map in the West and is the most popular game in the franchise overall, for good or ill.
Whether the game still holds up over two decades later or if people are too blinded by nostalgia is a matter of debate, but what is not up for debate is that Square Enix is investing a lot of time and money into this and they want it to turn out as best as they can possibly make it.
Yes, Final Fantasy had a few releases in America before VII and they were successful in their own right, but VII was the game that took the series from a cult classic to a household name in video games among American gamers.
Honestly, this new trailer gives me some home that we may see more concrete information this year, possibly even a release date statement in the coming months. Now that both Final Fantasy XV and especially Kingdom Hearts III have been released, Square Enix can probably focus more of their time and resources on the remake of the most successful installment of their most successful property.
As for when the game itself will come out, my guess is most likely close to the release of the Playstation 5.
So until more information comes out, I'm guessing we'll see the remake in late 2020 or early-to-mid 2021.
